Michigan @ Minnesota, Feb 14 & 15

With a few exceptions, these Gophophiles are a very literal bunch, Wisko. Irony, facetiousness, or even sardonic wit simply do not compute.

Sioux fans, on the other hand . . .

Yeah, those Sue fans were an understanding bunch after the Robbie Bina check.

:sigh: :(

I keep hoping for a glimmer... Makes you wonder how in the world Jane Goodall had the patience all those years.

Doesn't matter...

Of course it doesn't matter, that would require objectivity. ;)

Alfa - who is angry besides you? I also played hockey and fact is if Downing kept his elbow down there probably is no discussion to be had. As a supposed former player yourself you should know that.

Nice sweep by the Gophers.

I hope we don't see a let down when state penn comes to town.

That's all.

I still think Yost's atmosphere is going to be a culture shock for the gopher players and fans in March.

It's not what it was in the 90s or mid 2000s, but it's still off the charts. Who knows what it will be like when minnesota comes in.

Maybe the freshmen will be, but all the other players should be used to noisy and hostile environments. Maybe they will hear the announced attendance of 6600 and wonder why it was such a small crowd. Probably assume school is out. :D

Hey, capacity has been reduced to 5,800 now. Yeah.

Once 8,100 and has shrunk to 5,800.

If the noise level can be anything like it was against Wisconsin, oh man. The team fed off that energy, I think.

Agree maybe the freshmen. However, remember that UND was part of our schedule in years past, and they are much more hostile and abusive.

And people think Gopher fans are full of themselves...

Re: Michigan @ Minnesota, Feb 14 & 15

Sorry, but having played the game one time in my life, I can understand how the Minnesota player would have reacted and moved had he played the puck cleanly. It's not hard- his head would be up, looking at Downing, and even leading with his elbow, he would have probably gotten chest of shoulder.

Again, when I was a kid, even as a squirt, it was fully expected that you would flatten a player who had his head down like that. Amazing how this game has changed. Now we want to ban him from playing...

Go ahead and hate, I'm sure it's going to really help your team.

See you guys in a few weeks. Stew all that time, it does your health really good. Be really really mad. That way you can be exactly the same whether your team wins or loses, just like every game.

Alfa, I think you've hit on the Appeal to Authority fallacy. Somehow, the fact that you once played hockey gives you authority to shape your argument and appear more credible. The only problem with that is the referees on the ice - you know, those hockey folks who formally train to become the real authorities - saw things differently. And they are the true authorities. They are the rule enforcers. They don't talk about the glory days of flattening ("sharking") players at the Squirt level. Your experience notwithstanding, in the NCAA college hockey realm of 2014, a player with his head down is vulnerable and a blow to the head of such a player is a 5 minute major. Also, I'm not sure when or where you played your hockey, but here in Minnesota checking is not allowed at the Squirt level, so Minnesota Squirts most certainly would not "expect" to be flattened. And, given the NCAA rules, neither should a college player. You don't have to be a hockey player to interpret the rule. Hell, you don't even need to be a fan. Any grade school graduate could watch the film, read the rule and make the call. If the ref deems that a player on the receiving end is "unsuspecting" or "vulnerable" then the rule applies. Warning was both. If Downing leads with his shoulder down and pinches off the player against the boards, which is the object of his check anyway, there may not have even been a call. He clearly lead with his elbow and all of the responsibility is on him. Really, it's in the rules.

Well, here it is (I underlined the good parts):

Contact to the head. Any time a player makes direct contact with the head or neck of an opponent it is a major penalty and game misconduct at a minimum. The responsibility lies with the player making the hit to avoid contact with the head and neck area of an opposing player. A player delivering a check to an unsuspecting and vulnerable player puts themselves in jeopardy of being penalized under this rule.

When the initial force of the contact is a shoulder to the body of the opponent and then slides up to the head or neck area, this is not classified as contact to the head. This type of action may still be penalized, at the referee’s discretion, as another penalty (e.g., charging, roughing, elbowing, etc.).

I hope it's a great atmosphere. But I think the kohl center two weeks ago is as hostile as it gets. That was one rowdy crowd
