Michigan Hockey 22-23, new coach, new players, new era

Well, I expect there to be a good conference call with the B1G to review what is and isn't a hit to the head penalty. Especially knowing the difference in the standard between Michigan- which has gotten a ton of late review calls against us, and the rest of the league- especially State- given one forearm to the head not called and a shoulder targeted to the head not called.

Pretty sad to see the refs be so inconsistent with the standard of that penalty.

Granted, we are still an incredibly undisciplined team- given how they were standing around in the third period, it's surprising they didn't give S even more chances on the PP.

But that's not a good reason to have different standards of what a call is. Joshua should not have played for half of last nights game because of his forearm to Hughes' head, and they should have been on a major PK instead of scoring the tying goal.

If we make it to the FF this season, it will be a miracle that the team can beat both the other teams and the refs.

I hope USCHO has a liquor license. Have never experienced so much Whine.

Wow, that has to be one of the most creative attempts at an insult of all time. Did you come up with that on your own?

Must have tasted good back when you where discussing about your coaching situations multiple times.

I did. I thought it was pretty good. And for clarity I was discussing your coaching situation. But seriously, do you guys ever lose a game just because you played poorly and not because of illnesses or bad refing? Just curious.

Hilarious that you actually think you were original. You need to get out more.

And, in the time frame of Berenson, Pearson, and now Naurato- how many coaches have you gone through? And how has that worked out?

So go ahead and pretend that you are in a position to challenge the era your best coaches almost 50 years ago.

Gosh the topics sure do change fast. Incidentally I was able to see MacInnes coach my first couple of years there. Mel taught the "hockey PE" class I took. I have another early memory, late 70's. Michigan Dearborn Wolves played the Ann Arbor version in a hockey exhibition ... and beat them.

Hockey at the school down South on Thursday, then in a football stadium Saturday. I've been to enough outdoor games, so we're skipping this one, although I do enjoy getting the double hate in Cleveland where I would feel obligated to where something Baltimore Ravens along with my Michigan Wolverines apparel.

Has anyone seen about potential 1st round B1G tickets? I can't remember back to season ticket renewal if that was a buy it now and we'll refund you if it doesn't happen or not....and if it was an option if I took it or not.

Nice to be in 2nd place in the B1G all by ourselves. The only way the other team with the sat upon M logo doesn't win the conference season is if they somehow lose all of their remaining games and we win all of ours. They are 11 points ahead of us with 2 weekends of play (12 points) left. Wisconsin clenched 7th. Spots 2-6 are still available to claim, but Notre Dame has a bye this week, and Sparty gets it next week. Currently Michigan is 5 points ahead of PSU, and 4 points ahead of the other 3 (aOSU, MSU, ND).

Considering how we were in 6th all by ourselves a few weeks ago, it is nice to be in 2nd.

As for officiating, it's terrible both ways. The reviews are slowing the game down to where it's not fun to watch. The crap up at Munn with more penalty minutes than minutes played was awful. Some of that's on the officials, but most of it is on the players for being dumb. We nearly turned it off in the 2nd period as it was becoming unwatchable.

Having been a fan since '65 I've seen a lot of games over the years. The last couple years the quality of the officiating has deteriorated. When the move from only 2 officials to 3 then 4, the hope was that a better game with less cheap and flagrant stuff happening. Sad to say I think it has to be either that there are a couple zebras that do have a pre-disposition on certain teams as far as making a call.

It has gotten to the point that when I see the names of the ref's I can predict at least 1 major and 4 obvious missed calls.
With football it's who is defining targeting, in hockey it seems to be is it a check or boarding/ head contact major.
Someone should count up all the major's that were only caught on a coaches request for review. I think the Conference officials would be shocked. I wonder what is the number of ones not caught?

Fridays game was an example of the officials not getting a handle on the early chippy stuff so it wouldn't ruin one of the best rivalries in hockey.

Refing isn't easy. For me a ref has 3 things I care about in this order. #1 (by far) Player safety #2 Call consistency within the game #3 blatant rule violations. That said, they need to be held accountable and I'm just not seeing it from any sport right now. Why is it that leagues are so defensive of refs? Why aren't performance metrics published on each ref, in season?

If the refs were volunteer no problem, but they are paid just like everyone else. If they didn't have a heavy influence on how the game is played and who is allowed to keep playing, it would be more understandable.

I support keeping everyone on the ice honest. That includes the refs and the job they do.

Freep is reporting that our helmets this weekend will honor MSU (ours and Softball) this weekend. A green heart with the Sparty in the middle.

Good move.

Anyone coming down to Cowtown for tomorrow's game?
They posted it's a sellout but they have the 3rd level curtained off this season so the Schott doesn't look so cavernous so when they say "sellout" it means the first two levels. I have no idea if they'll open a section of the 3rd level if the demand is there for tickets. I might call the ticket office tomorrow to satisfy my curiosity.

No plans for us to visit the worst state ever. Thursday night hockey will be enjoyed from the comfort of our living room. Same with Saturday's game, I've been to enough of the outdoor games, I don't need to go again.

Can I whine about the fact that this game is on BTN+ as opposed to actual BTN? I'm wondering why BTN has two channels but just show the exact same thing. This seems like the right time to split what is shown so that the big BB and big hockey games can both be seen.

My goodness, the penalties. Doesn't the team know that face masking is a 5 min major? We keep doing that and it's exhausting the team killing penalties. And with all that we've taken, refs know to keep a close eye on the team for more of them.

For all of the talent we have, how is it that we keep taking penalties like that?

the joys of dealing with youth and a rookie coach.
