That could only be made funnier if Miami had held that hat for a 3-goal ransom and announced it over the PA just before drop of the puck...made the fan come down to center ice to claim his/her hat.
That would have been epic.
Cliff notes version:
In Feb. 2007 Miami came into MQT... On Friday night, they beat us 4-1 or something like that... Not really a close game... At the end of the game, a certain NMU fan became frustrated... That fan was wearing a Chicken Hat... Well, as the game ended, Miami started to celebrate their victory... Enraged, the NMU fan chucked the Chicken Hat onto the ice... The hat landed on top of the net in front of the student section... Upon the hat landing on the net, Dane took notice... Maybe he found the chicken hat amusing and wanted to use it to impress chicks upon his return to Miami bar scene... I don't know... For whatever reason, Dane skated over, grabbed the hat, and stuffed it into his pants... It was done in a manner similar to what a 3 year old would do when they see a candy bar sitting on the table and no one around... This act enraged the NMU fan even more...
After spending some time at a local watering hole, the NMU fan in question was still stewing... Out of the blue, this NMU fan decided that he was going to call Dane himself and ask for his hat back... Like a man on a mission, the fan managed to get a hold of the room that Dane was staying in at the Marquette Ramada Inn... Fully believing that this was a joke, the Miami Players in the hotel played the NMU fan for a bit... This further frustrated the NMU fan... By the end, the NMU fan had enough fun... He ended the phone call by telling the Miami players that they had better hope that they are going home through Chicago... The fan told the players that if they were going to go over the Mackinac Bridge, there would be a bomb on there, and that the bridge would blow up with them on it...
Well, the players loved this and thought getting under the opposing fans skin was awesome... When word got back to Rico however, he was not amused...
Apparently Rico was so peeved, he called the NMU Athletic Department and Coach Walt Kyle about the indecent... It wasn't that he took the threat seriously... He just didn't like that we were calling his team in the hotel... This all became instant bulletin board material... The next night, NMU won and the student section had all sorts of fun with the incident... Rico made Dane give the hat back... It was handed to an NMU Athletic staff member, and then given back to the fan... We have since made amends with Rico, presenting him with a rubber chicken of his own...
