Merrimack River Rivalry 3/1 and 3/3

Tough to pick against Lowell right now. 15-2-1 in the last 18. Both losses were with Carr in net. I think we continue to see Hellebuyck as he has proven to be the team's best goalie this season. Ride him as far as he will take you. Both games should be close though. Excited to see the Tsongas packed again.

Re: Merrimack River Rivalry 3/1 and 3/3

So, did Merrimack really believe that pulling the goalie the second time was actually going to help?

Eh, I don't blame them.

Really chippy game... some shades of Merrihack out there. I thought the reffing job was fairly iffy.

edit: for whatever reason, the stat keepers didn't make the third goal of the game an ENG.

At least they didn't have Carr starting the whole game like they did at BU. Finally fixed it at the end of the game.

No, but i think they were just hoping to score a goal and leave the rink on a postive note. Another tough hard fought game between these teams. Like the first meeting it came down to the team that got that first goal.

Indeed, you have to score one before you score two. Just ask Rico Blasi and the Miami folks about the other team pulling the goalie with 3:00 minutes left and how that worked in a certain big game in 2009. Occasionally, it does work.

Arguably, both teams did a pretty decent job last night. Like Bob said, it was just an intense, defensive. playoff-type hockey game. I didn't have a problem with the play from either side. Credit to Lowell for wearing down Merrimack, like they did to them exactly one month prior. Lowell didn't allow Merrimack to push them around like they did at Volpe/Lawler. As mentioned by someone in the Merrimack thread, they lack of secondary scoring has absolutely killed the Warriors of late. They are now 0-3-0 in this stretch run and with a loss tomorrow, Merrimack will likely be traveling as they would need serious help to gain home ice. With a win, Lowell will be playing for home ice on Friday, and perhaps a little more over the course of next weekend.

Looking forward to another great hockey game tomorrow afternoon.

I think some of our earlier choices of firing on net could have been slightly better but I thought we did all that we could to score... but when there's always somebody there to disrupt you are going to have problems... the only thing you can do is to get them to draw penalties*. MC really does seem like a very defense first team.

edit: *or some how score through a pile of bodies... easier said than done.

Re: Merrimack River Rivalry 3/1 and 3/3

Got an email from MC last night that Merrimack was releasing some more tickets yesterday. I'm assuming this will sell-out this afternoon.

Re: Merrimack River Rivalry 3/1 and 3/3

BTW, was this break for MC? Would be early, but wondering ... there were less than 100 students there.

Re: Merrimack River Rivalry 3/1 and 3/3

That was a Red Sox type sell-out.
I thought the same thing when five of us attended the game Friday night in Lowell -- we could only get SRO tickets, just before they were sold out. As we glanced around the arena almost 1/2 way through the first period (when UML allows folks to claim open seats at the 10 minute mark,) we noticed a lot of vacancies. We were easily able to find practically an entire row that was open, just off center ice, maybe 10 rows up from the bottom, and we stayed there all night.

At the Tsongas, it's much better to stand on the concourse at the rail when you are in a group then to try and sit and socialize while all lined up in a row. Many people just go into the Talon club room, drink, and watch the game on the TV's. So most nights there will be empty seats that can be found. It's one of the great untold secrets of the Tsongas, the open concourse concept that allows people to do the things noted above.

??? No criticism intended, but I thought the purpose of going to watch a live hockey game was to do exactly that: watch the game, not socialize. UNH has a similar concourse (and it seems to me that it's more open than the Tsongas) as do other venues, so similar arguments could be made.

And as to going to the Talon to drink and watch the game on TV, well, I can do that at home, and don't have to pay for admission to the arena. ;)
I must admit I do like the idea of being able to buy a beer there, one amenity lacking at UNH because of state law.

Anyway, congrats for your recent success. The 2 games against PC may not be the last you play against each other this year: I can see you both playing for the HE championship in Boston.

As long as it's not 5 in a row again....

Even if it wasn't state law, I believe the NCAA has a ban on "adult refreshments" for on-campus arenas. I don't think you can even get alcohol at NCAA Regionals but I could be wrong.

Agganis is grandfathered because they sold it before the ban was put into place and the Tsongas is exempt because technically the arena opened as a off-campus venue.

I thought the NCAA's policy concerns those games/tournaments that it controls, and that it's up to the individual school to determine alcohol sales, but then again, I, too could be wrong. (I do know that one can purchase alcohol at the Whitt, but only in the "private clubs" such as the Varsity Club, which requires a certain level of financial commitment in most cases. I have been there many times, albeit as a guest. It overlooks the Visitors' tunnel to the ice, but blinds are drawn at all times, and one is politely scolded for pulling them back to see the away team as it prepares to take the ice. And, if the game happens to be televised, the TV is turned off between periods, and the club is vacated.)
