Merrimack Offseason thread - preseason rank 10th again? I think not

Re: Merrimack Offseason thread - preseason rank 10th again? I think not

The seats will be mounted on the bleacher-base. What I'm saying is that they're not going to just be putting a backrest onto the bleachers. My guess is that they'll be of a little better quality than the seats that comprised of the blueline club the past few years.

While pouring concrete would have been the best looking option...I don't dislike the metal...you can make a lot more noise stomping on metal than concrete.

Thanks for the clarification!

my pleasure, I was the EIC of Merrimack's newspaper the past 2 years before graduating this past May so I have some limited inside info :)

Phase One of construction has begun and will be completed in time for the home-opener on October 16th against UConn on Homecoming weekend. This phase of the construction will include new blue chair back seats on the entire home side of the arena, new bleacher seating behind the goal at the parking lot side of the arena, a direct entrance from the Blue Line Club to the seating area, a new press box on the home side of the arena, movement of the penalty box and scorekeepers box to the home bench side, movement of the graphics portion of the scoreboard to the opposite side, removal of the “tin foil” that was previously on the ceiling, code work which includes sprinklers, wall reinforcements and ADA compliance, and a paved walkway next to the arena from the parking lot that will replace the man-made dirt walkway.

The next phase of the renovations will be completed at the latest in December following the Northeastern game on December 4th and prior to the January 8th game at home against Maine. These renovations include new blue chair back seating on the entire visitor’s side, a walkway underneath the visitor’s side for the visiting team with direct access to the bench, new lighting and an additional heat recovery system.

I saw it and it is coming out very nice...

The Blue seat backs with the white out will be a pretty cool effect. The student section behind visitors net will be very intimidating to say the least.

I also liked the fact they moved penalty box besides their bench. Less skating and time to adjust.

Annual Blue vs Gold game scheduled for October 4th at 3pm. Open to the public free of charge.

Re: Merrimack Offseason thread - preseason rank 10th again? I think not

The success was in D 2. They joined Hockey East the following year and in over 22 seasons, including last year, have never had a winning season.

I think in fairness though, that if anyone can do it, the current coach and his current team can. Lets hope

The team had a lot of success in D2, you're right. But 1987-1988 was in D1, they went to the NCAA Quarterfinals where they lost to Lake Superior. They also won the ECAC East in 1988-1989 in D1.

The Hockey East high watermark for Merrimack is now 12 wins in conference (16 overall), set this past season. Lets hope they can eclipse that number this season.

Could very well be true but www.hockeydb.com has them in division 2 in both of those years. Vesey was there in 88-89 and won the D 2 Hobey Baker that year....

I think it is safe to say they played both D 1 and D 2 schedule. Unusula but it worked.... They were ina D 2 league

Warriors Visit Matthews Arena Tonight
Northeastern Welcomes the Nation's Top Independent School
By Julio R. Varela,
It has been one unforgettable year for the Merrimack Warriors.

Besides capturing another Division II ECAC East title, Merrimack was the top-ranked Division I independent in the nation. Its 32-4 record set a new school record for most victories in a seasson. The Warriors also have a Division II-III East Hobey Baker recipient in senior Jim Vesey.

What more can a school that is not part of a major college hockey conference ask for?

A bid to the first round of the NCAA Tournament that doesn't find the Warriors packing up their bags and heading out West.

Merrimack (the number-six seed in the West) got that also, as it visits Matthews Arena tonight and tomorrow to face Northeastern (the East's number-three seed) in a two-game, total-goals series.

Re: Merrimack Offseason thread - preseason rank 10th again? I think not

Didn't the total-goal system screw us over a few times in the playoffs? I remember hearing that from an old professor at Merrimack who has followed Merrimack Hockey pretty much since the program started. Does this ring a bell for anyone else?

Not sure about that, but I hated that format. I would have love to have seen a game three against Northeastern back in the 1988 NCAAs. After the way game two ended that would have been a heck of a game.

Check out this section of the online media guide for 2010-2011 to see the prior records: http://www.merrimackathletics.com/sports/mice/2010-11/Game_By_Game_Opponent_Records.pdf

If you look at the Lake Superior series in 1988, the final goals tally was 8-4 but the games were split; one win, one loss.

Re: Merrimack Offseason thread - preseason rank 10th again? I think not

Thanks DJ, that's exactly what I was thinking of! What an awful system.

In the '88 playoffs vs Northeastern (2 games-Total Goals), Merrimack lost the 1st game 5-3, and were down a couple in game 2. Looked like the Huskies would advance, but the Warriors exploded for 7 goals to take the series, total goals 10-8. boblav, you obviously remember that!
Advanced to face Lake Superior, and won game 1 in a huge upset, 4-3 IIRC, on a late Vesey goal. Hrvinak in net.
However, the Lakers came back and dominated in the 2nd game, 5-0. They went on to become the champs, beating Maine and then St. Lawrence in OT.

Check out this website for great tournament history:

I don't ever remember the Warriors getting screwed because of the 2 game total goals format.

Re: Merrimack Offseason thread - preseason rank 10th again? I think not

I guess I just find losing in the quarter finals due to total goals when you split the games is just outrageous, but it was the system at the time so in a way you're right, they weren't "screwed", just a lame way to end an amazing run

That series was wild. Lots of smack talking and pushing and shoving between the teams both nights. Near fights in the pregame warm ups prior to game two. The Huskies looked like they had it made then everything started going in for the Warriors. Unbelievable game, as I said, I would have loved to have seen a third game as well as a third shot at Lake State. Terrible format.

Re: Merrimack Offseason thread - preseason rank 10th again? I think not

Does anyone have any word on whether or not Stephane succeeded in his off season goal of bulking up?

During the offseason, when Stephane was out west at the Ducks rookie camp I read on the HFBoards that he registered as one of the three strongest rookies they had in camp...you can take that for what it's worth since he is a few years older as a college player vs their draft picks in their late teens.

I think we will have a better idea on Oct 4 when we see him back on the sheet in the scrimmage.
