Merrimack College Warriors 2015-2016: Come out and play

Re: Merrimack College Warriors 2015-2016: Come out and play

Shame they scheduled the Christmas gala on the same night we are hosting the defending national champs. You gotta figure a lot of the big donors are gonna be at the Lawler for that one.

OK I'll bite ... can there REALLY be any "big donors" when MC is still stuck in a glorified HS hockey rink?

Good start, grabbed the 1st 2 points of the weekend. Nice to see that Plevy was -3. Team Sweden coming up big; 4 points for the Gustafsson boys, and the GWG by Alfred Larsson. Bra gjort (well done!!)

Also Merrimack is small catholic private school. I wish we had state funds available to pay our staff. I like our rink but, hated the four clowns in stripes last night at the rink.

Re: Merrimack College Warriors 2015-2016: Come out and play

Want to say it was a class act for the MC band to play the French National anthem last night...kudos!

Lawler is hardly a glorified HS rink. Is it the most advanced or luxurious, of course not. But I can think of worse places to watch a game, especially since all the seats were added.

I took a bunch of BU friends to the game up there a few weeks ago and they seemed to like the atmosphere and how close to the action all the seats are.

I'm sure it felt like a home game considering the BU student section was about the same size as the home students

Just because you can think of worse places to watch a game, doesn't necessarily mean it's not a glorified HS rink.

Listen, I personally like the place, and there is a soft spot in my battle-hardened heart for the MC program. But let's be honest. Lawlor is a HS standard rink in every way that Mooradian Field/Cowell *Stadium* (and I use that term loosely) in Durham is a HS standard football facility. MC has at least to date opted for the "lipstick on a pig" renovation option for their rink ... while for all the grief I've given UNH for what they've allowed to pass for a college football facility for FAR too long, they're at least basically starting from scratch with the new football stadium/facility. It remains to be seen what the place looks like when they're finished, but at least they're taking a shot at it.

I guess my original point was - and still is - that if there really are any "big donors" in the MC universe, one would think they might be focused on doing something about upgrading the school's most prominent sports facility.

I'm not expecting Agganis-on-the-Merrimack to break out in North Andover any time soon, but something along the lines of the renovated Schneider Arena down at PC doesn't seem to be an unreasonable goal/project ...

I agree with this last part completely.

But in all honesty I don't know what there's not to like.

-They don't necessarily need more seats, there's nothing worse than going to a game at the Mullins with 82 people in attendance.
-They upgraded all the benches to seats
-Concessions have improved somewhat
-Good sightlines
-Crystal clear glass (seriously, it's without a doubt the best glass in the league)

It's missing a video board, but it keeps the younger generations off their phones and actually watching the game. Can't tell you how many BU girls I see just staring at their phones during half the game at Agganis.

Gawd, I do like MC and its fans ... but if the best you folks can do is "we have the best glass in HE" ... just wow

How about "We have the most Swedish players in Hockey East!" or "We're not as Merrihacky this year!"

I guess being 13th in the country doesn't count for anything....(not that rankings really matter this early in the game). I was merely trying to point out some positives of our "glorified high school rink."

Re: Merrimack College Warriors 2015-2016: Come out and play

BC replaced their boards AND glass this season, so Lawler is, at best, in second place. ;-)

Haven't been to conte yet this year, but love me some nice clear glass. It really makes a difference IMO.

They should have invested the money in their football program though, of which my wife and I have been season ticket holders to this year......woof. Then again, I'm not sure any amount of money invested into that program could prove helpful right now.

Re: Merrimack College Warriors 2015-2016: Come out and play

Maybe it's early, but what a wacky conference standings table. I'll certainly take being in the second place logjam after 7 conference games.

First time to J. Lawler Arena .... how is the parking? Saturday's Game is at 4:00pm. Do they serve adult beverages at the game? Any recommendations on pregame places to eat? Looks like there is a Bertucci's nearby. What about Andolinis Restaurant in Andover? Any other thoughts appreciated.

Welcome. You will find some answers here: https://redd.it/3n39nu . Never been to Andolini's. Palmers and Grassfields are good. Also, There is a really good new oyster bar called Elm Square Oysters that I can highly recommend in Andover Center, they have a really good beer selection too. For a lunch pre game, you may just want to go to Harrison's Roast Beef or the 99.

As for parking, you can park anywhere on campus during the game, but don't drive past an empty spot thinking here might be one closer, or you might get stuck in traffic and miss out. your best bet is probably out by newest dorms on the Rt 125 side. You may wish to arrive on campus 10-15 mins early to park and walk up to the rink. The lot directly in front of the Lawler is reserved for Blue Line Club members (and they are the only ones with access to the bar at the rink).

Oh, and apparently the UNH fans think we have the best glass in Hockey East.
