Merrimack College 2011-2012 Season Thread - vita post Da Costa

Re: Merrimack College 2011-2012 Season Thread - vita post Da Costa

Given that you were dead-on with this pick last weekend, what is your prognostication this weekend? ;)

UNH has done nothing to convince me they aren't a basement team. Sad situation for one of the truly classy organizations in HEA.

Re: Merrimack College 2011-2012 Season Thread - vita post Da Costa

So this is kinda strange. Surely, UNH has never been this far behind Merrimack at the midway point of the season. A very weird season up in Durham.
No reason MC can't get 3 or 4 points this weekend. Continue to stay out of the box (easier against a team like UNH which doesn't take many penalties themselves) and good things will happen.

I agree that there is no reason that MC can't get 3 or 4 points this weekend. UNH may not agree, and I believe that Coach Umile would like to beat Coach Dennehy on every occasion. The Warriors will do fine provided they do not underestimate their opponent. Should be a good series and definately points that the Warriors need to acheive home ice.

I was going to say split with the home teams winning, but I would have been wrong so hopefully both road teams can win. I thought the game was well played but there was a 10 minute stretch of penalties that were Merrimack's undoing tonight. I could sit here and blame the refs but you can read that on any other thread on the forum. Merrimack is going to be in the box a good amount because they play aggressive hockey especially their defensemen. Hopefully Merrimack can get the two points back tomorrow night.

Tripping, slashing, hooking, hitting from behind and elbowing penalties are not aggressive hockey. They are undisciplined stupid lazy penalties that cost the Warriors this game. Figure it out or forget it. You cannot play nearly a period of hockey shorthanded in this league and expect to win. It's the same song and it's getting old. Philosophically, the Warriors have got themselves into problems and if the approach doesn't change, they can forget home ice, and certainly a Championship. I believe there will be some lineup changes tomorrow, there has to be some discipline and a consistent effort for a full 60 minutes.

Great game, poor outcome. It sucks because they really did dominate play for probably 40 minutes last night, and rang the post a couple times. Hopefully they can feed off the energy up at the Whitt and take some points home.

There will be one or two lineup changes, trying to elevate the "energy" that is required. Unfortunately, until the "penalty" issue gets addressed, the Warriors are unlikely to secure home ice, in my opinion. Collins takes an elbowing penalty, then is rewarded right out of the sin bin, going straight onto the power play. What message does that send? If you've ever played hockey you will know. Getting benched for lack of effort is one thing, but seeing guys continue to get rewarded for bad behaviour pretty much kills the team spirit that is required for a team to be successful. There are still some role issues with this MC team, some created, some not clearly defined. I believe that the Coach will get these corrected very soon in order to hopefully secure home ice. If he does not address this, I don't expect to see the Warrior's in the Championship game in March.

Tonight was a good road game that Merrimack needed the two points. By sitting Flannigan tonight Dennehy showed that no one is safe. Look for Ryan to come out flying against Providence. The game was back and forth and I thought Rhett Bly had a great game after Madsen went down. It looked pretty serious and hopefully Carter is ok.

An absolutely HUGE win. With Maine sweeping BC and UML sweeping NU, the 2-5 positions are really getting tight! Terrific, disciplined road win. Got scrambling in the 3rd just before UNH tied it up. Good timeout call after the goal. Props to Heffernan on the OT GWG. Nice move, nice shot (may have deflected up of the d's stick?)

Congrats MC, a very big win for you. Should be an exciting fight to the finish.

After watching last evenings game I left the Whittemore Center not pondering UNH's loss or how well both team's played or even celebrating my 300th UNH game I viewed in person. I wondered and prayed for Carter Madsen. I hope that it is not as bad as it looked from my view which was right in from of me. As a lover of hockey I hope and pray this young man heals well and is able to return to his team.

I'm so happy that the Merrimack Valley came away with four points last night in two OT battles. The reverse split of the games dealt a significant blow to UNH's chances of getting back into the home ice fight.

I'm hoping in the long term that Flannigan gets the message; as I've said before as talented as he is, Merrimack will not go far in the post-season with him and the rest of the crew in the box. Madsen is part of the soul of that team, if he's out for any long stretch of time, that will have an impact. On the other side, it may be the wake-up call that they need to step it up for final six weeks of the season. I'm sure there will be plenty of motivation for the single game a week from this afternoon against PC.

Thank you for this post, and thank you for everyone's concern. I won't share details but Carter is in good spirits today. Coach Dennehy and AD Hofmann and their staff have been amazing and we are truly thankful that Carter is part of the Merrimack family, they are exceptional individuals within a special community. We are appreciative and grateful of everyone's involvement and efforts in attending to Carter last night and going forward. Also, special thanks to Carter's teammate, Ryan Flanigan, for everything he did. Many thanks to all at UNH who helped out as well.

Thanks for posting, and best wishes to Carter. We've all seen some horrible, horrible injuries in the NCAA and NHL and I think we can all be thankful that this does not appear to be as bad as it could have been.

It sucks when our kids get hurt. My son broke his ankle a couple years ago. Surgery, a plate and 6 screws, but he's back snowboarding as aggressively as ever (if only I could get him to wear a helmet!).
Gary, wishing you and your family the best, and a full recovery for Carter. Sounds like he is a terrific young man, and a great representative of my alma mater.

Best of luck to Carter. It happened right in front of my seats and it looked awful, can’t remember when I saw an injury that bad. I wish nothing but the best from him and hopefully he has a full recovery in no time. As a fan of UNH we might root hard for our teams, but we never wish an injury like that on anyone. I could see the expression on his face while they were taking care of him, and can tell from that one little instance of seeing him that he is a tough kid and will work hard to get over through it.

Heres to a speedy recovery for Carter Madsen. Being a parent of a yoing daughter who's suffered 2 bad arm breaks playing sports I can really feel for his parents as well.

Re: Merrimack College 2011-2012 Season Thread - vita post Da Costa

Let's get some game talk going. Which PC team shows up against Merrimack this week? Crushed last weekend, 14-1 by BU, then Beaudry comes back to shutout UML. The Friars have been a tough out for MC in the past couple years, but I think the Warriors take this one, another low scoring affair (now, THERE'S a surprise prediction;)). Madsen's loss hurts, so I look for some players to step up their game, especially offensively. A win in regulation would be nice.

With everyone else playing 2, MC will continue to have games in hand against the frontrunners. At the end of the weekend, games in hand against BU (2), BC (3), Maine (3) and UML (0). Need to win this one to prevent BU from getting to far ahead, or giving the teams behind you a chance to sneak by in the standings.

Re: Merrimack College 2011-2012 Season Thread - vita post Da Costa

We better do big things this year because "hokydad" on The Mack Report was saying Mike Collins will be transferring to BU...
