Merrimack 2012-13 Season thread

Re: Merrimack 2012-13 Season thread

Mike Collins leading HE in scoring (31 pts, 1.35 ppg) is truly amazing. The next highest scorers for MC are tied for 35th! He is in a bit of a goal scoring drought over the past 4 games (only 2 assists) and really has to come up big over the next 2 weekends. This past Tuesday's game notwithstanding, I feel pretty confident about the D and goaltending; would be nice to find someone who can bring some offense. Oh for a DeCosta, Barton, Tucci, Todd, or going back a bit further, Kris Porter. Someone that can finish.

Re: Merrimack 2012-13 Season thread

Other than Collins they have no scoring. Every team basically traps Collins because they know they can play anyone else one on one. Until this team develops secondary scoring they will be a middle of the pack team in Hockey East. Three goals in the last nine and a quarer periods is disappointing. At this rate I expect them to lose in the quarterfinals again.

Re: Merrimack 2012-13 Season thread

Im not ruling out one last run in march, but hopefully next year with a less bottom heavy class and some hopefully decent recruits, not to mention a veteran goalie, they will make a lot more noise.

I think who they draw in the first round is big, other than BU they have played with everyone in the league. This team is right in the hunt for home ice, is not eliminated from 1st place and we are in March. Although I have hopes for next year I am excited for the next 3 games and the HE playoffs.

not just secondary scoring....scoring period! The forwards are good grinders, there isn't anything close to a sniper in the whole bunch. Continues to put too much pressure on the D and Marotta to allow 1 goal or less to have a chance to win.

Re: Merrimack 2012-13 Season thread

Is Marotta hurt? There cannot be any other possible explanation why he is not starting unless Dennehey has conceded that his team has no chance at home ice. Now down 3-0. This game was OVER at 2-0. Not ready for prime time.

Very disappointing. It may work out well for MC if they are the 6 seed and BC is the 3 seed. BC is reeling from injuries. A lot can happen between now and the end of next weekend but it will be the best of the possible match-ups for MC in the QFs.

That'd be a no lose proposition for you! No urgency tonight in the 1st or 2nd. Picked it up in the 3rd, but again, the lack of offense killed them. Credit To UML and Hellebucyk for taking it to them all weekend.

Re: Merrimack 2012-13 Season thread

Lack of urgency through the first two periods Sunday was almost as disappointing as the student section on Sunday. I don't know if students don't like Sunday afternoons or going to games. Dennehy tried to mix up the lines and still nothing doing. This weekend Merrimack plays a hungry U Mass team trying to make the playoffs. If Merrimack plays like they did Sunday on Friday night it will be a long night at Lawler.

Re: Merrimack 2012-13 Season thread

It's strangely appropriate that Bigos would miss his Senior Night due to a game misconduct. Hope he kicks some *** up in the pros.

Re: Merrimack 2012-13 Season thread

Fun Fact of the Day: Exactly five years ago, UMass beat Merrimack on senior night 4-2 at Lawler to clinch the 8th and final playoff spot. That was the last time UMass won in North Andover.

Edit- They should let Bigos sit in the penalty box the entire game.

Re: Merrimack 2012-13 Season thread

After a sloppy weekend Merrimack draws BU. The power play is still standing around too much and goal scoring is a problem. Congrats to Collins for finishing second in scoring in Hockey East. I think he should be first team Hockey East.

As for this weekend I think it will be a tough one for Merrimack. After getting swept by BU and none of the games were that close, Parker is retiring this year. Don't expect too many calls to go the Warriors way this weekend.

Re: Merrimack 2012-13 Season thread

A bad match-up for the Warriors gets worse with Parker's announcement. I'll take the "over" on penalty minutes regardless of the line.

Well the Parker part of the rumours have turned out to be true. Let's hope the other shoe doesn't drop.

Re: Merrimack 2012-13 Season thread

Of all the teams that MC "could" have faced in round 1, BU was the one team I didn't want to see. We just don't seem to match up well with them...we match up better against a lot of the finesse teams out there such as BC or PC...BU is more of a hitting team and it throws our forwards off their game...to make matters worse, our offense has disappeared and our defense has loosened up a bit...now Jackie P is retiring? Ugh. As a life long Red Sox fan, I've gotten used to saying it but it looks like I'll say it again..."there's always next year". Let's hope I'm wrong and MC can do what they did in 1998 and beat BU in the quarterfinals...that year, we were #8 vs #1 BU lead by All-American Chris Drury. And, if I remember correctly, we got swept by BU that year, but I could be wrong.

What's the other shoe? Denehey to BU or something?

I don't like this match up one bit, but the way MC finished the regular season I'm not sure they could beat Northeastern, let alone a good team.

It would be a major upset if we even got to 3 games to BU. As for Dennehy, the rumor always was that he would only jump for his alma mater BC, but publicly he has been the consummate company man.

Re: Merrimack 2012-13 Season thread

I think Merrimack will steal one with something like a 2-1 score. If it gets to a game three then you never know.

Re: Merrimack 2012-13 Season thread

Hello offense? Anyone seen any lately? They make every goalie look like Ken Dryden (or for a more current reference, Jimmy Howard). There was promise mid-season, but they have reverted to the norm; no scoring and bad penalties. Would love to see MD show some and bench Bigos. 3 minors (what, no misconduct?). Whatever good he does is more than outweighed by stuff like this. At least Ellis, Heywood and most of the other D can stay out of the box. Offseason thread anyone?

Re: Merrimack 2012-13 Season thread

Perhaps a younger team might get better come tournament time rather than feeling the effects of arthritis and faltering terribly down the stretch?
