Merrimack 2012-13 Season thread

Re: Merrimack 2012-13 Season thread

Great series this weekend, one of the best home crowds at the Lawler ever, too. Maybe I'm biased, but I also thought the new refs that worked the game Saturday were excellent, fair and did a good job maintaining the pace of the game.

Re: Merrimack 2012-13 Season thread

A four point weekend is always big, especially when it is against a team that Merrimack will probably be close to in the standings come March. Collins is off to a great start and this has been a fun team to watch. I am hoping after coming off a split in North Dakota and hosting BC Sunday afternoon BU might overlook Merrimack and Merrimack can steal 2 points at home against the Terriers.

Re: Merrimack 2012-13 Season thread

I think the game Friday is going to be extremely telling as to what we (the fans) can expect this year. This BU squad is loaded with young (both young and inexperienced) talent. In looking at what we've seen so far there are more questions than answers, but it seems like perhaps this team is deeper up-front than people assumed. That being said, the sample size is small with only two HE opponents, one of whom was lightly regarded going into the year (maybe inappropriately). I'm looking forward to Friday night for sure, as it is guaranteed to be physical and hopefully, a close affair. The interesting thing for me will be to see if we have the mix of size and speed that can consistently muscle (typically not a problem) and skate with a BU (or BC) team year over year. If MC can walk away with HE pts this weekend it portends to another year in the steps into building the type of consistent program that the coach has been aspiring to.

Congrats to Mike Collins and Jordan Heywood for back to back HE Player of the Week honors. Pleasantly surprised at the depth of this team..playing lots of the freshman regularly, even in crunch time. Scotti has been solid, and Chistie and Hussar do not look out of place at all, and Bahe is getting some ice time. Big game coming up Friday night at BU.

@MikeMcMahonET: Yes, it's true. My "position was eliminated" at the Eagle Tribune this morning. Found out at about 9am...

Some bad news, Mike McMahon apparently is no longer with the ET. Here's hoping that he finds a great position elsewhere and that he or someone else can carry on the tradition of providing us with high-quality coverage of MC and general NCAA hockey.

Very sad news, one of the best guys going in the game.

Tough weekend. BU game was reasonably solid. Carried a lot of the play, but certainly did not dominate. O'Connor was excellent in the net for the Terriers, and he is huge! A cleaner matchup than usual. Losing to UConn? YUCK. Bartus is solid, but still a very disappointing loss.

I did not watch saturday, but as the HEA wrapup on the front page mentions, a loss to UConn puts MC in a potentially bad pairwise hole. It's hard to be optimistic heading into Chestnut Hill Friday, but they at least seem to show up and play hard against more heralded teams.

Re: Merrimack 2012-13 Season thread

Watching both games last weekend, we learned that this team is very inconsistent. Watching UConn reminded me of Merrimack the last few years, outworking teams. Although I do not see Merrimack beating BC tonight I feel like the game will be close and a similar outcome to the BU game. As for pairwise, I never even took that into consideration coming into the year. Merrimack's goal should be to finish in the top eight in conference this year and then you never know what is going to happen.

Re: Merrimack 2012-13 Season thread

I couldn't help by think back a bunch of years to Dennis Green after the Cardinals had a big lead only to blow it to the Bears (I think it was the Bears) that lead to his unforgettable speech..."They are who we thought they were...and we let them off the hook". After scoring 3 goals in the first 6 minutes of the 2nd period against BC to take a 3-0 lead, only to lose it at the end of that period, made me want to stand up and recite his whole speech...word for word...that could end up being a CRUSHING defeat in the end as we had arguably the best team I've seen in my 20+ years of college hockey (28-1 in their last 29 stretching back to last January) against the ropes only to let them off the ropes, take a few jabs and then get knocked out in the 3rd round. Ouch. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SWmQbk5h86w

Another tie against Colgate in what was a tough close game. Playing Providence this weekend will be important for the outcome of the season. IMO a split is necessary and hopefully the Warriors can take more.

It is a key series for PC also...MCgrad, why no visit yet to Scheinder Arena?

I am actually going to Saturday nights game. Before Merrimack made the NCAAs 2 years ago the only non Mass rink I visited was UNH with a buddy whose twin went to UNH. Really excited to see a new barn.
