Memorial Day

The Rube

Retired Due To User Interface
This weekend, remember why many of us have Monday off, and why it's a special day.

Re: Memorial Day

May God bless richly all the amazing men and women in the armed forces, police services, firefighters and correctional officers who protect us from those who would cause us harm. I truly thank God for the sacrifice you are making on our behalf.

Re: Memorial Day

Agreed. And yet some of the people who will be celebrated on Monday are those who tried to pry this country apart.

Re: Memorial Day

All of us should take a moment to honor those who have died defending this country. At the same time, we should remember the brave young people who are serving now, all around the world. And the veterans, many of whom bear the scars of their service. Where do we find such people?

Re: Memorial Day

Great story yesterday on 60 Minutes about Army Staff Sgt. Salvatore Giunta, 25, who was the first living recipient of the Medal of Honor from the wars in Afghanistan and Iraq and perhaps the first since Vietnam? An exceptional young man who coined himself a "mediocre' soldier stating that anyone else in the Army in his position would have done the same thing. I don't know about that (not to even remotely try and malign anyone in our military) but his actions imho were heroic and he's well deserving of the honor. Sadly, he re-signed from the Army because he felt the pomp and circumstance behind his touring took away from what he wanted to do - stand side by side with his fellow soldiers in the field.

Good luck to him, his wife and their expectant daughter.

Re: Memorial Day

thanks to all serving, those who did not come back, and their families.

I finished this book about 2 months ago...Lone Survivor. Those men couldn't be thanked enough. I only hope the movie will do them some justice.

just watched the 60min piece on youtube. wow. so he calls himself "average" or a "mediocre" soldier and then adds..."think how good the great soldiers are"

we rest easy because of men like this
