Marathon Killers Apprehended: the Aftermath

Re: Marathon Killers Apprehended: the Aftermath

Just after I bought my house, I was called for jury duty (new county, registered to vote in the county, so I knew it was coming) and my number was so low that it was selected. (less than 100.) I went in, was told to bring something to do, but I just had a feeling. Well, it turned out to be right as I was the first one to be called. Sat in the jury box all day, I thought that I was a shoo-in for selection. We broke for lunch, and everyone in the jury box being questioned was there for a while, we thought we were going to be selected. After lunch, in the restroom, I was talking to someone about how it was going to be over soon, and how the prosecutor thought he was such a hot shot because he was from NYC. We got back into the courtroom, and my number was called for dismissal. Turns out, the hot shot prosecutor was using the stall in the restroom and overheard this. :D

So I didn't really research this and may have some parts wrong but....

The most popular morning radio show in Boston, the Matty in the Morning Show, is on one of Clear Channel's top stations, KISS 108. The morning team has been together for 30+ years. The day that jury selection began, the news/entertainment guy on that show said his son had jury duty and naturally they were all "OMG he has to get picked and then he can be our inside guy during the trial!!!! blah blah blah!!" Oh how funny and so on. Well I guess that somehow made it to the presiding judge and he's not happy. One or two members of the local media mentioned it, now Clear Channel is mad and telling the Matty in the Morning crew to stop talking, there was some mention of the defense calling for a hung jury or something. First of all, I don't think jury selection is complete, is it? Second, could you imagine there being a hung jury and this d-bag gets off because of a stupid radio show????

What happened to D&C? (just kidding)

I think that there should be a rule that if you appeal the ruling on some technicality, you have to at least spend some time in the general population during the appeals process. I bet pretty boy there would think long and hard about just shutting his pie hole and enjoy his time in solitary before wanting to get feed to the wolves.

Re: Marathon Killers Apprehended: the Aftermath

Trial is underway, opening statements included this:

BOSTON—A defense lawyer for accused Boston Marathon bomber Dzhokhar Tsarnaev admitted at the outset of his trial Wednesday that he helped carry out the deadly April 2013 attack but said he was in the thrall of a self-radicalized older brother who wanted to wage a holy war on America.

The concession during opening statements set the stage for the defense to try to sway the jury away from imposing a death sentence on Mr. Tsarnaev....Defense lawyer Judy Clarke, a capital-punishment expert, told the jury her client followed “a path born of his brother, created by his brother and paved by his brother,”

but they are not referring to the brothers by their now-"official" names, Speedbump and Fratricide.

Not sure why he would want to live, he'll never be safe in prison.

Re: Marathon Killers Apprehended: the Aftermath

Unless he's put at Gitmo, he's a dead man walking at any prison.

He'd be at the Fed supermax in Colorado. Highly unlikely that anyone, other than staff, can get to him. They said the same thing about McVeigh's partner in crime. He's still breathing.

Yeah, and with what, virtually no human contact at all? That would suck balls. I would be looking for a bed sheet at that point.

The jury already has a verdict.

Closing arguments and charge went faster than I thought. Any doubts on the probable verdict?

EDIT: Guilty on first 4 counts rest coming in. All death penalty charges.

Now 13 for 13. Does he escape the death penalty?

Strap a bomb to his chest, drive him out to the desert, and explode it.

Re: Marathon Killers Apprehended: the Aftermath

16 for 16. Sounds like he could bat 1.000 here.

Also, watching on CNN was a bad idea. Every single count comes in "Count #, guilty. This is important because..." Next one "Count # guilty, this is an important one"

Re: Marathon Killers Apprehended: the Aftermath

At this point nothing unexpected considering the defense team started the case with "it was him." The next phase is where things will get tricky as death sentences are never EASY to secure. That being said, I think coming back this quickly (actually pretty close to when I expected) certainly tells us this jury is sharp and swift enough to sentence him to death.

I get the sense that it will take a few days (4-5) next week and they will come back with the death sentence - at this point the jurors believe what they believe about the death sentence although they were empaneled because they said they would be able to dole out this type of punishment so I think it is going to happen. There will be appeals of course and he will spend some time on death row and hopefully a door is accidentally left unsecured and he gets shanked with a sharpened piece of plastic from an inmate toothbrush. :D
