Maine vs. UNH: Old Ties Die Hard

Re: Maine vs. UNH: Old Ties Die Hard

I certainly haven’t seen all their games but I HAVE seen enough to recognize that they have CLEARLY regressed from the beginning of the season. If you watched that game you just knew there was almost no chance they were going to score in the third period. And Maine was 0-10-2 when scoring less than three goals (they only had one until 3:31 left).

Re: Maine vs. UNH: Old Ties Die Hard

And rightfully so. They have to be having some hesitation. It’s not like he has zero responsibility for this disaster.

Hannigan has been around for a long time and is very knowledgeable. My guess is there is something behind it. At this point UNH's best bet is probably to start from scratch.

Maine baseball is up 6-1 on Miami right now in the ninth. The game is on ESPN3.

Edit: Wrong thread

Souza taking over has not only been widely reported - it's something that has been expressed as a done deal to numerous media members and many others close to the program. Shortly after his hire I was told by someone with direct knowledge he was taking over and many other posters here have been told the same (including recently)...

When your announcer says it's been widely reported - he's right. That's not an unusual way to characterize the situation (IMO) and I wouldn't spend too much time reading into that statement. There have been no whispers of a change of heart, it's been reported as done in print in just the past week and it would be a complete 180 from any decision the UNH administration has ever made. I am fairly certain that the current AD (in 18 years) has not fired a coach for performance on even ONE occasion (that's why hiring an inexperienced Souza is so scary - not because he doesn't deserve a chance). So, I can't see him pulling the rug out from under a coach in waiting. Though I appreciate your efforts to cheer UNH fans up - I will be absolutely shocked if Souza is not named the HC shortly after UNH is bounced from the post-season. Maybe as early as tomorrow...

I would be VERY happy to hear UNH was opening up a national search, but it's VERY doubtful and there has been zero indication that's a possibility...

Dan, I could be wrong in this but isn't he (Umile) HC til July 1? I mean, we all know the new coach will be Souza. What I am more curious about is when his assistant is named, but we can discuss this on our thread I suppose. As per the game is what it is. We are very familiar with the 3 goals in 3 mins kind of thingy...

I'm not sure what his contract states - but that's a formality. I'd imagine they'll still announce Souza and start the search for a new assistant as soon as possible...

It was likely a three-game set (if UNH was to win) anyway - so win the second game and carry the momentum into Sunday. The game two winner very often seems to have the edge in the rubber game. They're still alive...

Or they'll go quietly tomorrow night, who knows...

Yeah; let's see what happens tomorrow.

Re: Maine vs. UNH: Old Ties Die Hard

Three game series almost always seem to come down to who wins game two..

75% based purely on logic (100% if there's a sweep, and 50-50 if it goes 3 games), and I'd probably concede that it's closer to 80% for the winner of Game 2 based on the "momentum" argument you raised later on.

But this is UNH ... on the road ... at UMaine ... with UNH winning one (1) of their last 20 or so games coming in. Let's face it, UNH's only chance to win the series was to win last night, and not surprisingly, they found a way to lose a close game. Again. After awhile, it's not just bad luck, it's just that you don't have the horses, you lack desire (or at least can't match the opposition's desire), and collectively there is no confidence.

I want to believe otherwise, but let's face it - it's done, over with. I'll be surprised if it's even close tonight ...

Re: Maine vs. UNH: Old Ties Die Hard

On the UNH recruiting thread it has been reported that Souza has been recruiting in western Canada . Assuming he has been telling prospective players that he is the next head coach, it is hard to imagine he won't be. I suspect the announcers were not up to date on the 3 year UNH coaching saga, nothing more.

Re: Maine vs. UNH: Old Ties Die Hard

The 1st ME goal last night? DT signaled icing, probably because the linesman did, then checked out and could not reengage when the puck took a bad bounce AND the ME player out skated the UNH D. Pathetic.

Like UNH, I am without power this weekend, so will miss the ending of the Umile era in real time.

It seemed like he was like 'what' when it went in?

The Maine player has wheels, he will out skate most d men.

Thanks. The announcers mentioned that 3 - 4 times as well. Now that we are aware that ME has a fast skater we will look to have better position and skate our fastest. :D

A fast skater is right on the money
