Re: Maine Summer 2013 - Pizza Season

Tremendous group? Shore and Marty, who else is tremendous? Does anyone think they will even get home ice? I don't, I see BC, BU, Lowell, PC and Notre Dame better then them. So now a 6th(if that) place finish is tremendous?

Well, it IS an 11 team league now........so 6 out of 11 ain't so bad...........

Jake Rutt, Ben Hutton and Connor Leen (illness restricted him, may recover), are going to be very good players. Add Steve Swavely, Jon Swavely, Ryan Lomberg along with a strong incoming class. Very good goal tending with Ouellette and Morris.

Yup......Coach Whitehead will lead them to the promised land. Abbott needs to sign him to a 3 year extension though or recruiting will suffer.

I like Rutt alot and the Swavely bros but I don't see them as "Tremendous". Having dealt with IBD in my own life Connor Leen is a huge question mark. The other Freshman I haven't mentioned all look to be good players and as they get more experience may be great players, time will tell. I don't see Tim taking this team anywhere past 6th in HE next year, hardly a" Tremendous" team

Re: Maine Summer 2013 - Pizza Season

The most telling line in the article is that it is Ferguson's decision... Ferguson's role should be merely to bless the money involved in getting rid of him. From there, the call should be Abbot's alone. As of now, Abbot simply cannot just pull the trigger. His position is neutered.

What you fail to realize is that while Maine does have some good players, other teams have BETTER players. 3 BC recruits who just made the NTDP are all top ten, if not top five, 97 DOB's in the country, so you're going to need more than guys like Rutt and the Swavely brothers to compete with them on a regular basis. It's no coincidence that Maine was at the top of the mountain when it had a roster filled with guys by the name of Kariya, Ferraro, Montgomery, etc.

Re: Maine Summer 2013 - Pizza Season

How many tremendous players does Lowell have? PC outside the goalie? Merrimack? At this point, and watching teams not named BC and Minnesota excel in the NCAA tournament, Maine shouldn't need 4 NDTP guys to compete.

I hope on some level they have some outside consultation on this thing. A detailed, inside look from some of those alums, a firm, it doesn't matter but it needs fresh eyes or they'll get no answers. Whitehead and staff believe they're doing everything they can, I'm sure their effort is honest and they're genuine in their intent; So since they seem to be wrong, you need an outside voice to say so.

Re: Maine Summer 2013 - Pizza Season

Last time I checked, PC and MC didn't make the tourney. If making the HE semis is your goal, then you can probably get by with what you have. UML has a hell of a goalie and while they certainly look good at the moment, lets get real and not compare their current "run" with Maine's dominance in the 90's.

Haven't seen Eric at the gym for a while but I have to assume he was there as part of this "evaluation" especially since he was sitting with Abbott. But IMO this whole evaluation is a farce. Just do it already and get it over with. Maine can't possibly go into next season with a lame duck coach. I couldn't care less how this plays with the fans, but this is sending mixed messages to the players (current and future) and that is unacceptable. Someone in Orono needs to grow a pair and pull the trigger.

Much has been made of my friendship with Tim. It's true that I've known him for two decades and was very happy to see the coaching job at Maine stay "within the family." However, my loyalty is always going to be to the players who have agreed to come to Maine, to put on that sweater and represent us. Those young men deserve better than this joke of an evaluation. I believe someone earlier made the comparison to cutting off your leg to save yourself. Sorry to say but we have reached that stage. If TW is allowed to coach next year we're going to have a nasty infection to deal with.

Whether it's Steve, Paul or someone else: Just do it already and put us out of our misery.

Pretty much the same reason I gave for Ted Alfond being more loyal to the program than to Whitey. People can have multiple loyalties, that may seem to be at odds with each other. However, there will undoubtedly be an underlying major loyalty.

I still don't get the connection there. It has to be more than meets the eye. Then again, how do we know Ted's heart is in the same place his father's was? Harold was the patron saint of Maine hockey...maybe Ted has other interests. If this "evaluation" is being done to justify the decision to some boosters, it's even worse than I thought. Based on what I heard months ago, Abbott was preparing for this and should have been ready to go when the season ended. There should be no reason for an extended evaluation.

When you're talking about Jon Swavely(4 goals 83 career games), Leen(8 goals 49 career games), and Morris( 2.83 gaa and .881 sv%) being top players on the team that really shows how far into the toilet this program has gone.

Well, you're not going to go from missing the Garden 5x in 7 years to Maine's 15 year run overnight, so getting back to the HE semi's regularly would be step 1. I don't think Maine's that far away, talent wise, and I think with some systems adjustments and some urgency, inspiration and guts they can compete with just about anybody. Are they going to run out a roster like 1993? No, but neither is anybody else in college hockey. Are they going to run out a roster like BC had last year? No, but again I ain't expecting to win 3 NCAA titles in 5 years. I want good hockey, competitive hockey and respectability.

If there's a switch Tim Whitehead can flip to make that happen, great. I used to think he could. Every year that passes without them doing so makes it less and less likely in my mind. He's running/run out of mulligans. I don't really care who the coach is as long as the team plays hard and isn't absurdly frustrating to watch. I think the majority of fans are in that group.

Re: Maine Summer 2013 - Pizza Season

I just got an unsolicited email from someone completely unaffiliated with Maine hockey, but very much connected to the college hockey/hockey east scene at a level far greater than a committed fan and they are hearing that he's done... I am trying to get some more information from them... fwiw, they have been right on every other coaching change in HE before they were announced/made.

like others, i can't believe they would keep him on for next season without extending him, and I cannot see the powers that be justifying an extension... so do you go into next season with a lame duck coach and have a lost recruiting year, or do you make a move... gotta think a move will be made...

AGREED! Enough with the "evaluation" we all have had years to "evaluate" and it is apparent that by and large we do not like what we see and certainly are not satisfied with the results! When the people who have been the most patient, supportive and defensive of this coach are ready to move on what else does it take??????

I wake up each morning check BDN online and twitter waiting to see and then we have a statement today stating wait some more. I also hope they do not try some band aid approach and make one assistant a scapegoat! It's all or nothing. Pull the **** trigger so we can assure the kids that are Maine and the ones recruited know that things are headed in the right direction.

It's Ferguson's decision, because he controls the purse strings of the most like source to finance the buyout - the President's slush fund, which was used to send Cindy packing.

i get that. that's why i said that ferguson's role should be to merely bless the money. ideally, abbott should have been able to go to ferguson and say "hey, i'm going to review the coaching staff of the hockey team. will money be available if we need to make a change?" if yes, abbott goes through with his eval. if no, abbott announces that whitehead will be back and we all pop a cyanide capsule....
