Maine Recruits: When Ashes Fall, Legends Rise

Riley Mercer(Drummondville(QMJHL)), 3/31/04, G, NZ 4.0, 6’2″, 200 lbs, great butterfly, long to cover top even in butterfly, tracks pucks, technically sound, fast paddles, up and down quick, flash, gets pads out quick, good rebound control

I'd be surprised if Riley Mercer went NCAA. Word was he had gotten close to signing with an NHL team a few weeks ago, might still be in the works but waiting for season to end.

Thanks for the info. What level would he enter the pros at?
If he recovers from his injury after Drummondville is out of the playoffs but before whichever team he signs with's AHL team is done, then could be an ATO, with the NHL contract beginning 25-26. Will likely end up in the AHL at first like most young goalies. The injury looked pretty tough, though. He's ruled out for at least the rest of round 1, but would not be shocked if he ends up not playing until the fall.

William Whitelaw is back in the transfer portal after spending this season at Michigan. Looking at the line charts he finished as the 4th line right wing. Finished 2nd on the team in +/- and had a relatively high CHIP which was 7th best despite 11th in time on ice. Not sure where he’s headed but it seems like he was underutilized at Michigan.

Michigan loses the only goalie that could return, Cameron Korpi. He was a freshman so he has 3 years eligibility left. Would make a great pick up for a team. He is a NZ 4.0 rated recruit.

Michigan also lost Christian Humphrey half way through the year as he went to play for Kitchener(OHL). He put up over a point per game there. He is playing top line center for Kitchener. He would make a nice addition to this Maine team. He is a NZ 4.0.

Maine’s newest recruits. NZ rating is low and doesn’t seem to match their reports.

Simon Motew(Kitchener(OHL)), 3/31/03, RD, 6’ 185 lbs, NZ 3.25, strong skater, agile, good lateral mobility, plays with head up, heavy shot from point, smart decisions with puck, walks the blue line, great vision, can stick to forwards, block shots, good at breaking the puck out,

One thing I will say is that Barr continues to emphasize he wants guys that are a good fit for the locker room and fit with the culture. This defensemen appears to have that since he was an Alt captain and he was voted by his team as most popular player. A good off the ice type.

How many D men are their on the roster now. Maine needs offense

How many D men are there on the roster now. Maine needs offense
Ten defensemen on roster right now. But we don’t know if Arnott and Morse are going to transfer. My guess is that they both are likely to transfer. We also don’t know if anyone would leave early. My guess is likely not.

Here is where we are at:

Holt(3.5)/Chabrier(3.75)
Langlois(4.0)/Djurecevic(3.75)
Usereau(4.0)/Antonacci(3.5)
Motew(3.25)/Nobes(3.5)
Arnott(3.5)/Morse(3.75)

Added Motew to the recruit table, updated current recruit stats, added playoff points into the table, updated top uncommited and unsigned 04's stats and playoff stats and removed a couple of recently commited 04's that were on the table.

Great stuff. Caught up on all the links this past week. Lots of reading!

With the 26 roster cap in mind:
The 24-25 team carried 28
-15 forwards
-10 defense
-3 goalies

The 25-26 team:
12 forwards
6 defense
1 goalie
= 19 to start

The additional 7 would probably be 6 skaters and a goalie. I think Barr would carry 9 on D and still 15 forwards therefore shorting the Goalie depth and D by 1 each.

I would think Arnott most likely to leave the D core which would bring their numbers from 10 to 9.

10 Forwards remaining and incoming - Scott, Gerrior, James, and Peluso equals 14.
If either Carney or Calafiore leave then the transactions remaining would be:
-Stewart leaves
-Back up goalie portals in or Shea comes up
-Arnott leaves
-a forward leaves
-2 forwards commit or portal in. Hopefully a Center.
15/9/2=26

Thoughts?

I think you forgot to account for Morse.

This is my latest projection to get to 26. And it assumes Arnott, Carney, and Morse head to transfer portal due to lack of playing time. And it means Maine would look for two center types and a back up goalie through the portal or from major junior.

I'm thinking either:
15F
8D
3G

or

14F
9D
3G

I think we have three goalies no matter what because if a goalie gets injured/sick for a couple weeks that would leave you with only 1 goalie during that time if you went with two. If that other goalie got sick or injured then Maine probably would have to forfeit games unless we are in the conference part of the schedule, than we might get the league to potential reschedule games like what happened with AIC for one of their games in the 2024-2025 season.

I don't think Maine will have 10D. All/most of Maine's Defensemen is solid (on paper). Even if there is 2 or 3 defensemen injured/sick most of Maine's defensemen is capable of playing 1st or 2nd D pairings minutes and not negatively affect our defense.

The question I have is if Maine will go with 14 or 15 Fowards. I'm leaning towards 14 since in the worst case scenario for forward depth Maine could put one of the offensively gifted defensemen in as a foward if Maine got down to 11 or less healthly forwards. The opposite scenario being where a forward plays defensemen due to 5 or less healthy defensemen would probably not work out as well in my opinion.
