Maine Recruit Updates: All Are Welcome.......

Re: Maine Recruit Updates: All Are Welcome.......

"In talking to people in the hockey world this morning -- college coaches... -- there is an overwhelming feeling of discouragement over the Wahlstrom decision."

They are discouraged because they didn't get the press and publicity (or the recruit)!

Re: Maine Recruit Updates: All Are Welcome.......

If the NCAA wants to change the rules, I'd welcome it. But these are the rules that are in place now.

Re: Maine Recruit Updates: All Are Welcome.......

The problem with the italic source's notion of "Getting back to LOIs" is that there's nothing to get back to. Kids still sign LOIs. They do so at archaically late periods, which is what leads to early non-binding verbals. Reforming the LOI to make them signable earlier will get people decrying making kids sign something they don't understand. There's no perfect way to do this.

Also I know of soccer players that have been offered scholarships at 14. The NCAA is not going to "decide hockey has gone rogue" over this.

Re: Maine Recruit Updates: All Are Welcome.......

I would like to ask the people in the know who is coaching the defensemen with this new staff. It seems there is a noticeable improvement in Maine's own end from the blue liners.

I would guess that it's Red. I seem to recall reading somewhere that he was in charge of defense at Yale.

As for all the rest of the crying and hyperventilating about what an atrocity the Wahlstrom thing is, and how it's ruining this kid's life, a verbal commitment to a school is worth the paper it's written on. This kid can do anything he wants to do at any time between now and when he graduates high school, and Red and Maine have no say or control whatsoever in the matter.

Thanks. It is outstanding work by Red on the D thing.

As for this new commit and everyone's political views on it... go pound sand. In today's politically correct society everyone is afraid to speak what is really is on their minds.

The kid is a phenomenon. His Dad played for Maine. The family dream seems to be to play for Maine. The Maine coaching staff, the program, the university, and his family are very much on board with all of it. If they don't have any problems with it then nobody else should. Anything more and it comes off as a jealousy thing.

Let's face it, if my son was offered a full ride to his dream at the 7th grade I would be an idiot not to allow him to accept it given the cost of a college education and all. And if anyone wanted to make me feel bad about it I would tell them to pound sand.

Having said all that, I think it is wonderful that this family can count on their son fulfilling a dream of being a Black Bear. Though right now, we just call him a cub. :D

Re: Maine Recruit Updates: All Are Welcome.......

Thing is, he hasn't been offered a scholarship. No offers or guarantees of being a Black Bear have been made. The kid's just said he wants to go to Maine, and I guess, Red has said, ok then.

All the other stuff will be worked out if and when he signs his letter of intent.

Re: Maine Recruit Updates: All Are Welcome.......

How anyone can defend this is beyond me... No other 13 year old has ever committed--so lets not toss around that other 13 year olds have. Red Gendron and his staff took advantage of a kid and will attempt to hold him accountable for a decision he made while starting puberty...

Kid will never go to Maine... He will go to Maine hockey games for the 6 years and guess what, it will lose its allure and he will end up at BC, BU or in the Q...

No other school talked to this kid...that's BS...knowing about him and offering him a scholarship are two different things...

Maine is so good now that they need or worry about recruiting for the next1-3 years that they can be watching 2000s and offering scholarships to them?

Disgusting is right....
Do you know this kid? What about his parents? How then do you know whats right for him/them?

Re: Maine Recruit Updates: All Are Welcome.......

This really is much ado about nothing. An L.O.I. is worth the paper it is written on. How many players from Canada signed them at Maine and then went Major Junior? And how tired are we Maine fans of seeing Maine kids play at BC, BU, and PC! Kid is 13 and plays hockey. His dream at the moment may be to don a Maine sweater like his dad did. That could certainly change. However, for the time being maybe this is good for the family. Keeps other schools from calling or following him around and bugging the family and advisor. They get to say sorry he is committed to Maine. Now in 4 years everything could be upside down. Maine could be in the dumper, or the kids development could be stunted, maybe he hit his peak to early? L.O.I. ripped up, he decommits or Maine release him from it.

Again much ado about nothing at this point. That USHR report is a bunch of sanctimonious crap by the way! Do you read USHR? I used to subscribe and still read the months when they become free. They are evaluating these kids at this age, but evidently a college should not??? Their entire website is based on evaluating and identifying kids very early in the process. They are partly responsible for calling attention to these kids at showcases and the like at a very early age. Fine with me, hope the kid develops and makes it to Maine. It was not that long ago that Liam Pecararo was the youngest kid to commit and since that time BC and UNH have gotten younger kids. Liam is set to arrive in Orono in the Fall of this year!

Re: Maine Recruit Updates: All Are Welcome.......

Passed by a colleague, frm a source at USHR I am told:

Wahlstrom: Too Young

Perhaps we’re too old, but all we have to say about the commitment of 2000-born North Yarmouth Academy forward Oliver Wahlstrom to the University of Maine is: he’s too young.

It was a bit of an eye-opener when Springfield Cathedral freshman goalie Keith Petruzzelli, a Feb. ’99 birthdate, committed to Quinnipiac recently, but Wahlstrom’s commitment blows that one out of the water. Wahlstrom, from Yarmouth, Maine, is 13 and a half, a 6/13/00 birthdate, a 7th grader -- and the youngest player to ever commit to an NCAA Div. I program. He is due in Orono in the fall of ’19.

We learned all of this when we woke up to find a press release from North Yarmouth Academy. That in itself is a first. We can’t recall ever getting a press release (see link below) from a prep school announcing a verbal commitment.

Wahlstrom has received a ton of attention across the YouTube-iverse for scoring lacrosse-style goals during Mini 1-on-1 shootouts between periods of Bruins games at the TD Garden – he’s done it twice, humiliating the poor kids between the pipes with the show-off move.

Wahlstrom’s father, Joakim, played for a year at Maine in the late ‘80s before going on to play pro in Sweden, and has reportedly been a driving force behind his son’s career.

In talking to people in the hockey world this morning -- college coaches, junior coaches, prep coaches, and agents -- there is an overwhelming feeling of discouragement over the Wahlstrom decision. College hockey is not college basketball or football. It’s a distant third, and the last thing the game needs is to give the appearance that young children are being offered college scholarships. Perhaps, the NCAA might take a few minutes away from worrying about Johnny Manziel, and decide that hockey has gone rogue on them.

If so, could this be a turning point? Will we finally scrap verbal commitments and get back to Letters of Intent?

We also think it’s bad for the kid. He’s a known hard worker, and will likely continue to develop, but, as the saying goes, there’s many a slip twixt cup and lip. Will the Maine staff still be together in the fall of ’19? What if Wahlstrom’s development slows? Will Maine lose interest? If Maine struggles, will Wahlstrom decommit and go to another school? Will the siren call of the Q be too much to resist? Will he fall out of love with hockey? We’ve seen all these scenarios come to pass, many times.

He's just too young.

again, FWIW...

This is what struck me. I run a blog called The World of Junior Hockey in addition to all my other writing gigs and I post press releases on college commitments and junior teams and league will do press releases on verbal commitments, high schools and prep schools do not. So when I saw a press release in my inbox at 12:45 this morning from NYA I was stunned.

They did their job because they got the publicity but its out of the norm for a prep school to do that.

13-year-old local star commits to Maine
By Nathan Fournier

The University of Maine Black Bears men’s ice hockey team received a verbal commitment from a YouTube sensation.

Oliver Wahlstrom of Yarmouth, known for the lacrosse style goal he scored in a Mini One-on-One competition, which aired during the intermission period of a Boston Bruins game on NESN four years ago, has committed to the University of Maine for the fall of 2019 at the earliest.

Wahlstrom currently attends North Yarmouth Academy where he is competing on the varsity squad despite only being in the seventh grade.

Maine gains stay-at-home defenseman
By Nathan Fournier

The University of Maine men’s ice hockey team continues to add size.

This week 6-foot-3, 215-pound defenseman Malcolm Hayes of Cushing Academy committed to the Black Bears for the fall of 2014.

“I thought it was one of the best places I visited in terms of the atmosphere, the hockey rink, and I loved the campus while I was there,” Hayes said. “I had a good conservation with all three of the coaches. I felt like they could help me refine to my fullest potential and it’s my goal to go onto the NHL.”

Re: Maine Recruit Updates: All Are Welcome.......

Dude you are sooo far off. He's 13. he doesn't really know where he wants to go to college......If he wants to go to college.... what he wants to do in 5 years. He's barely hit puberty. Clearly you aren't a parent and don't remember what you were thinking about at 13. Let the kid be a kid. I'll bet you a million dollars right now he won't be at Maine in 5 or 6 years from now. This is the parents doing not a 13 year old. It shouldn't happen and it pizzes me off.....If you couldn't tell! :)

Not necessarily...

I had my sights set on Maine -while living in Texas- even before the age of 13, and nobody in Orono ever recruited me, nor did my parents ever offer any opions one way or the other. I even passed-up a free ride at Long Beach State to pay half my way at Maine. (Yes, I know...)

My point is this: he may or may not show-up in 5 years, but family ties can be a crucial factor in making such decisions, and some 13 year-olds have firm goals already.

(And, hopefully, many more goals down the road. ;) )

FYI...
A.J. Drobot ‏@ADrobot95 11m
Extremely excited and proud to announce my commitment to the University of Maine. #GoBlackbears
He's a '98.

USHR had this a year ago:
AJ Drobot, F, ’98 (Team Comcast) 5-7/135 — Does not scream ‘pro’ when you look at him, but we can confidently predict that the Churchville, PA native will score a lot of goals at the D-I level. The skilled forward has a quick stick and is a threat to score every time he touches the puck below the tops of the circles. Will find a way to score goals as he progresses up through the ranks.

Re: Maine Recruit Updates: All Are Welcome.......

Ok, so I just watched an interview with Oliver on the 6 o'clock news. I retract all my previous rants. That kid clearly knows what he wants! Does not come across as a 13 yr old by any means. (plus he's already taking shots at BC and BU). Hope to see in in '19!
