Maine Recruit Updates: All Are Welcome.......

Re: Maine Recruit Updates: All Are Welcome.......

Thanks for the link. Encouraged by the job the new coaching staff has done so far, both during the games and on the recruiting trails.

My favorite line of the article: "Shea said one of the things that attracted him to Maine was the aggressive, in-your-face style of play employed by Gendron and his coaching staff."

Nice to hear that Maine may once again be building a reputation for aggressive hockey. It's been fun watching the games this year.

Re: Maine Recruit Updates: All Are Welcome.......

Is he actually playing for NYA varsity? If he is, fourth on the team in points is a pretty good effort. I hope he plays some other sports and doesn't put too much pressure on himself. I think a lot more kids get burnt out than people realize.

Again, I think it's great that he's (probably?) going to Maine.

But I'm not going to kid myself. If this were a few years ago (when I was more active on USCHO) and this were UNH or BC or BU . . . I'd be mocking them mercilessly for negotiating with a kid who's one year removed from elementary school.

I'm fine with it. It's not like there wasn't a prior relationship with the family since his dad played for Maine, and he's going to have a TON of options. I'm sure the Q will throw money at him, he's apparently eligible for (or is) a Swedish citizen so he could go pro there fairly young, etc. This is the business we have chosen.

Yes. NYA varsity

Thats the part that's a bit ridiculous to me. Hes not physically as developed as the high schoolers and hes out there on the ice as a seventh grader with kids potentially 5 years older than him ? Great way to get hurt.

edit...after reading the aricle below I see hes 5'9" and 155 lbs. Pretty good size for a kid his age, and probably comparable to most of the kids on his team.

His father played hockey, football and soccer, as well as skied and sailed internationally. I believe Oliver also plays soccer but I would have to check on that. To gain admission to NYA you usually have to display skill at more than just one discipline, whether it be academically or athletically. Before anyone makes the joke, I'll say they obviously made an exception in my case.

Re: Maine Recruit Updates: All Are Welcome.......

didn't realize BC even had a commitment from a 13 year old. wait...they don't.

anyway, this isn't just a Maine thing. it has gotten out of control everywhere. these commitments so early on mean absolutely nothing to begin with. other schools/major junior won't back off. there is plenty of time for this kid to change his mind. happens all the time.

13 yrs old.. wow! He prob will play some junior hockey somewhere & get into it a bit & thrive hopefully ..before heading to campus (for Maine's & his own sake).
All the best to him, must be very good.
