Maine Recruit Updates: All Are Welcome.......

Re: Maine Recruit Updates: All Are Welcome.......

Coach Leach is quite the asset too. There was a great interview he gave on the Coach's show yesterday at Season's. He really talked up the University and said campus is as nice as it's always been and then some, especially out on the mall. He also said that his daughter swam for Maine and his dad's twin brother also went to Maine; so even before his first stint as a Coach, when things were just starting to take shape under Walsh's leadership, he had ties to Maine.

I took a little hockey/skating class with Jay way back................he knows his stuff. Yep, a real asset.

I was finally able to track down Mark Hamilton.

Maine gains one recruit while losing another
By Nathan Fournier

LEWISTON — The University of Maine found its stay-at-home defenseman.

On Monday, the team secured a commitment from 6-foot-4, 225-pound Mark Hamilton of Winthrop, Mass. for the fall of 2014.

I really liked the coaches and I felt comfortable with them,” Hamilton said. “I like the tradition at the school and I look forward to playing there.”

At 6'4", 225 lbs, you have to wonder how talented this kid Hamilton is if he wasn't even a late round draft pick?? Usually at that size, even with the slightest bit of potential someone will take a chance (see MaCleod at BC).

in January he was 191st on the the NHL-CS list for North American skaters which would have put him a late rounder at best. Doesn't put up a lot of points, so perhaps that dropped him? Can't coach size and he's got plenty of it. Apparently his family owns a gym and his mother is a personal trainer, so hopefully strength shouldn't be an issue.

Re: Maine Recruit Updates: All Are Welcome.......

I hear there is a kid from a prominent MN hockey family kicking the tires on the Black Bears, possibly in for a visit this weekend. High end talent here with a brother who recently decommitted from MN. Would be quite a coup if we could land him and who knows maybe big bro would be inspired to come along as well.

Correct GScott. Tyler Nanne it is. Big brother Louie Jr still is undecided but did not want to go to MN as he wanted to make a name for himself. Shawn recruited their fasther Marty Nanne very hard and almost landed him, but lost out to the pull of the Gophers.

Was red around when Shawn was recruiting his dad?

No, Red didn't get to Orono until the 91-92 season. However, Jay Leach probably helped recruit the father. Jay's first year as an assistant coach at Maine was 1984-85; Marty Nanne's first year at Minnesota was 1985-86.

Re: Maine Recruit Updates: All Are Welcome.......

Tyler and Louie are grandsons of Lou Nanne, who played for 11 seasons with the Minnesota North Stars.

Re: Maine Recruit Updates: All Are Welcome.......

Here's an updated stat board. https://docs.google.com/spreadsheet...JyMVVpSTRrMVNCeXdfMENYenc&usp=drive_web#gid=0

Tyler Nanne is preseason Mr. Hockey candiate to some media members. That would be a huge get for Red. He also did look at Vancouver (WHL) this summer so he's looking at both options. With the Giants looking to host the Memorial Cup in 2016 they will be recruiting him to go there.
So more or less Maine has a 50/50 chance @ Tyler...do you think Maine has interest in his brother Lou..? Both..? It would sound like a big move if they could land either...one thing for sure the Recruiting trail is very interesting with this NEW Staff.

I would dare to say that connections these guys made over the years in the big leagues will reap substantial benefits down the road for UMaine hockey. It WILL be very interesting following the changes in the recruiting trails. Almost as much fun as seeing who these kids are and what type of players that are brought in.

I see it as a POSITIVE sign...and as you say a lot of interest in seeing where these recruits have roots to the game.

Re: Maine Recruit Updates: All Are Welcome.......

So who has Maine brought in for a visit to Alfond so far this year..? Has any been Goaltenders by the name of: Peter Cronin/Alex Morin/Elijah Harris..?

See Below Discussion re: Tyler Nanne. I'd assume Luke Michaud who committed a couple of weeks ago was on campus as well as Mark Hamilton who recently verballed.

Heisenberg's site only lists 8 recruits, 6 coming in next year, 1 either next year or 2015, and 1 for 2016. Included in that group is one goaltender, 2 d, and 5 forwards... based on the numbers, it looks like Red will have a chance to make his mark from a recruiting standpoint... There are 9 sophomores on this team, Red needs to knock replacing that big class out of the park...

Thanks and I have checked the Chris Heisenberg site...what I was looking for was potential recruits that have been in for a look see at Alfond Arena this year, not if they have committed but who has been @ UM for a look see. I know the names of Vesey/Hamilton/Widmar and T.Nanne.

Re: Maine Recruit Updates: All Are Welcome.......

I don't have inside knowledge but I wouldn't be surprised to see the Nanne's end up at a school on the east coast from all the stuff I read of Louis not trying to follow his grandfather's footsteps at Minnesota. So its quite possible they end up in the eastern time zone where there will be less media pressure on them to live up to the family name compared to playing in the midwest.
