Re: Maine Recruit Updates: All Are Welcome.......

schools do indeed have that money and have offered him for next season---that said, he wants to play a year of juniors and has every intention on playing in Sioux City...

Do they have his rights???

Re: Maine Recruit Updates: All Are Welcome.......

I don't remember anyone posting the NHL CSB update that was released yesterday. Pleasantly surprised to see 3 Maine recruits on the list. No match for Minnesota's 6, but not shabby.

Top NA skaters
122 Blaine Byron (Smiths Falls, CCHL)
160 Zach Glienke (Eagan, MN-HS)

Top NA Goalies
24 Sean Romeo (Youngstown, USHL)

By "Will Merchant," do you mean Ryan Lomberg? :D

Good catch - I was just cross-referencing the Heisenberg list.

The only problem is that you're competing against teams like BC that have 4 guys on that list who are in the top 60. Maine still needs better talent, a lot better talent....

Right. It was code. :p

Isn't it past your bed time?

Maine isn't really competing with BC. They're going to have to supplement those types of players with good 4 year players. Back in the early-mid 2000s on this board, I remember practically every offseason BC fans were convinced that Maine would crash the following year because Maine was losing (some huge %) of their scoring. And it never happened.

For 2 reasons. Maine was always led by upperclassmen, and just about every year Maine's new seniors stepped up to fill the void. And goaltending. Maine had it.

It would be crazy to expect the new coach to have a run like York's at BC. I don't expect regular season titles. I just want to see the team get its Alfond mojo back, get back to Boston in March, and get back to the NCAAs sort of regularly.

Re: Maine Recruit Updates: All Are Welcome.......

We don't need the third pair to be great, they're only going to be out there between five and 10 minutes a game. I think a combo of Riley and O'connor can get the job done.

the way injuries go, you need at least six solid "put them out there in any situation" kind of guys and ideally, among those six, you'd like to have a couple of studs in the mix. inevitably, someone is going to miss a few games and maine cannot afford a drop off should one of the top four get hurt. if that happens one of those 5-10 minute a game guys ends up a 20-25 minute guy and someone that is in and out of the lineup is now a 5-15 guy

Is everyone that negative on Riley, O'connor, and Williams? I don't think any of them are going to win the hobey baker award but they should be solid. Riley I could see developing into a real good offensive dman.

They are not Division I caliber defensemen. Check game tapes. Check +/- records. Check whatever you want.

i read it as "you can get by with only four very good/great d-men and plug in whoever else at the back end because they don't see much time"

it wasn't meant to be a commentary on any current players... my personal opinion is that you need 2 "go-to" defensemen, 3-6 should all be able play any situation, and then 7-whoever is sitting in the stands should be capable of filling in, but are early in their development and shouldn't be counted on to burden much of the load...

that said, i really like o'connor... i think he was a bit of a victim of timmay's d-style... i haven't seen enough of riley to comment, but from what i did see, he has plenty of potential... williams was a little rough around the edges... i actually liked his contributions when he played up front...

To be honest, I didn't do the greatest job in the world articulating what I was trying to say. I though O'connor blew hot and cold last year. Hopefully he can be more consistent with a different coach. Riley can fly and seems to have decent offensive skills. I'm with you on Williams, but for a kid from Maine on no money how much can we reasonably expect? I hope we see him develop into a reliable third pair dman.

I'm with you on what the makeup of your D corps needs to be in order to be successful.

Riley was a HUGE liability on the ice last season. He turned the puck over multiple times, got caught out of position. I'll give him benefit of the doubt that maybe a new coach can put him in better situations, but as of now, I see Hutton, Rutt, Renouf, Schurhamer as top 4 D.

Re: Maine Recruit Updates: All Are Welcome.......

Hutton +2
Rutt -8
O'Connor -10
Riley -12

I know stats aren't everything, but this is pretty indicative of who the best returning d-man is by a large margin.

Re: Maine Recruit Updates: All Are Welcome.......

So to clarify someone thinks Brice O'Connor is not a D1 defenseman? Really?

You're right. Stats aren't everything. Who are you playing with? Who are you playing against? What situations are you used? One was protected defensively, another backchecked more than any defenseman I've ever seen. The d corp, other than the Cornell, Hutton pairing was different every week.

He is a top 4 for any team in Hockey East. TW didn't use him right but my guess is Corkum will. I remember a game he was + 2 or 3 with a goal and at least 1 assist and next gm doesn't dress. Ex EJ dman of the year
