Maine Offseason 2020: We Stay Home But Swayman Leaves

Status

Another week with no word of whats going on. As I see it 2 possible scenarios, Red stays, whatever. Or there is an asst coach playing in the Frozen Four that they want, unlikely but one can hope.

Your are right on your first sentence...'Whats going on?"...at this point pretty much nothing, as this situation as of now borders on bizarre in that what is happening? Is Gendron coming back? How LAME-DUCK can you get by that as his deal ends on June 3oth...would you not believe if he was leaving or coming back both party's AD Ralph and Coach Gendron would announce together. Is there a plan in place? My guess after seeing what happen when Whitehead was fired and they{UMaine}sat in the corner for weeks upon weeks before getting anything going in the form of putting a new coach in place. Sad how this is playing out, maybe they have a plan, but we have all seen this movie before at Maine and it spells disaster/mess again with mega excuses in place. We can only hope they are just waiting till the Frozen 4 week in Pittsburgh is over that by next week we have a "IDEA" that Maine will settle this Drama Show 101. My guess/hunch, scary gut feeling is that we should all put on our seat belts and get ready for ANOTHER Roller Coaster ride with Gendron and Crew. No wonder Maine has become the laughing stock of Hockey East....looks like I said before...LAME DUCK OPERATION in place.

Who do you have in mind? I actually think the opposite is true.

At this stage I’ll take anyone who actively coaches and who recognizes poor effort. Wearing street clothes as a spectator is a valuable tool for more then just Covid-19 exposure. Multiple stupid penalties equals time off. Red’s teams always seem to play like there are no repercussions....

Is there any sort of rule or verbal agreement in college hockey preventing announcement of coaching changes before the end of the tournament?

I doubt very much there is an express rule against it, but I can absolutely see there possibly being a gentlemen's agreement not to distract from the "build-up" to the Frozen Four.

As if there was really any "build-up" in FF publicity to speak of these days ...

Swayman must think hes back in Maine being outshot 25-7 in a period. As usual he stopped almost all of them.

A quick update: As I was updating my spreadsheet for the private schools I saw that I had Jim Montgomery's annual compensation for his years at Denver. Here is a comparison with Coach Gendron:

Montgomery's reportable compensation is likely more than his base salary, but the total amounts should be apples to apples.

40 saves!. No problem for Swayman, Red gave him the experience. Sounds like that was the third highest shot count in nhl history for a goalies debut.

Hard to believe 40 saves/42 shots would be 3rd most all-time for an NHL rookie debut, but I guess so?

Important thing is, he won a big game at the next level for his team, who really needed the W.

So hire him @ $225K for 5 years. He knows what the fan base is like....and that new facilities are coming.

Yes he could be within the budget.
Keeping him might be a lot harder if he is successful. It appears that Providence got really nervous when BU, Denver and Minnesota (along with Merrimack and then St. Cloud State) were looking for new head coaches as Nate Leaman's reportable and total compensation jumped 61% between 2018 and 2019:

Four coaches are no longer at the school listed and the new coaches likely have lower compensation, but overall Maine is in the bottom third, so any successfully new coach at Maine may leave for a better paying job.

Have BU and Northeastern not been forth coming with their financial information? I notice you have no data for past years.

Have BU and Northeastern not been forth coming with their financial information? I notice you have no data for past years.
They are private institutions so they don't have to make most records available to the public. Therefore I have not requested NCAA financials from them or any of the other private schools and instead I've used the mush more limited EADA reports that they are required to release, as well as looking at their IRS Form 990 to see if the head coach is listed as a top earning employee. For 2019 head coaches at 6 of the 28 private schools were listed on their school's respective Form 990, while former coaches Jim Montgomery and Mark Dennehy had been listed when they were at Denver and Merrimack (only the 5 highest paid employees are listed). So my spreadsheet is like comparing different types of apples (the public schools, each who may report the information to the NCAA differently) and oranges (the private schools, who only have to report some very basic numbers for the EADA and which I supplement with head coach's compensation when possible and estimated scholarship expenses (actual expenses for Clarkson, CC, RPI and SLU). Far from perfect, but the best I can do.
