She's got ties to Maine hockey. That is likely why he started following her.
They have a lot in common. She's married to a guy who played a hockey coach in the movies.
Red is a guy who played the role of hockey coach in Hockey East for a few uneventful seasons.
All three of 'em, B-movie players, rubbed shoulders with fame, but never quite hit the big time ...
If assistants don't matter, why have them? Of course Berube will get the majority of the credit. Smart GM's and owners recognize who the key assistants are. Matt Patricia come to mind? There's a huge - HUGE - difference between being one of several assistant coaches at any NHL franchise, and the guy who's running the show. St. Loo may contend again for another deep Cup run this year, sure ... but they just won the Cup 2 years ago with Coach Berube in charge then, and in charge now. Monty is one of several assistants along for the ride, with all due respect. It's a good place for him right now, don't get me wrong. But he's not going to get any huge credit if St. Loo does again this season what they did two years ago.
Quick test - who was Scotty Bowman's assistant(s) in Montreal? Pittsburgh? Detroit??
Wally and I get recognized in Orono. Who cares?I guarantee you, Monty gets around St. Loo without being recognized. In Orono, he'd be a celebrity (again). Not sure if it means anything to him, but it matters to some folks. Who knows?
My apologies for not being clear. If you are saying that Monty changing in regards to alcoholism will be on him alone, I agree. Nobody will scare him straight. What I was trying to say is that the right GM/owner will be able to discern whether or not he has truly changed through a thorough interview process. An executive who is truly good at reading people will be able to recognize whether or not Monty is liable to backslide. If Monty's alcohol days are truly in the past - and I pray they are! - the right GM/owner will recognize that and move him forward to a HC position when the time is right in a few/several years. Finally, it's kind of quaint how you think some future NHL owner/GM is going to give Monty "the talk", and how that's going to prevent a recurrence. As if it were that easy. Monty's going to have to deal with his issues, he doesn't need some billionaire to give him a high school pep talk, he knows all too well what he did to mess up. In the end, it's down to Monty to sort things out. Fingers crossed, he seems to be doing pretty well (so far). And someday, maybe he will get another shot at an NHL top job. The guy who replaced him in Dallas had a long stretch between head coaching jobs as a long-time NHL assistant, but he (Bowness) never had any time (as a player or coach) in US D-1 hockey, unlike Monty. So Monty has options other than as an NHL assistant, and as you know, it's a route he's already traveled with a high degree of success.
It doesn't appear that UMaine explored the Monty possibility years ago. They are known to be systemically conservative and prudish, so I doubt they will explore the possibility now. More importantly: would Monty? My opinion is that he wouldn't. His star was rising and then went dim. Many thought it was going out, but it appears to have merely flickered briefly. If he believes his star is again rising, why would he explore a very large backward step?? He won't.Ultimately, you're probably right, lots of folks come up in discussions when HC jobs open up anywhere, and only a few of the names mentioned end up in the job. Many times, it's someone not many folks have ever heard of. That could happen here too if/when Red moves on. I guess my overriding point - mine, not a UMaine diehard fan, just an interested observer - is it seems to make sense to at least explore the possibility. There's something in it both could gain from.
JMHO
Wabi sports just had a piece on with an interview with ken ralph. He was asked about red, he did a wonderful job of not answering the question.
If they can’t even sort out whether to keep Red why on earth would anyone think they are competent enough to bring in someone better?
He did emphasize/stress that they want s succesful hockey program.
I'm all for giving Ralph the benefit of the doubt until we see who he brings in, but that's a pretty darn easy thing to say and a low bar.
Dont shoot the messenger.
They are really keeping this one in close.
Hopes it worth all the drama.
I get recognized all over Maine, you never forget a pretty faceWally and I get recognized in Orono. Who cares?

Hmmm, C-lister?Walshy was a transformative A-lister. Timmy was a B-lister. Red?? What's below a B-lister??
I seem to remember Walsh connecting with Hawn when he was in California receiving medical treatment? Didn't he stay with her and husband Kurt Russell?
“While in California, Walsh called his assistant coaches nearly every day. He spoke to recruits and kept tabs on the programs while living with actors Kurt Russell and Goldie Hawn. His connection to the Hollywood couple? Russell, whose family is from Maine, befriended Walsh at the 1999 Final Four in Anaheim, Calif.
"Kurt took me out golfing a couple time, just to take my mind off things," Walsh said. "That was important, being in a home and feeling comfortable. I can't say enough about Kurt and Goldie."
