Maine Offseason 2020: We Stay Home But Swayman Leaves

It's going to be tough, no doubt. But Ive said before that I don't accept Maine's remoteness as an excuse as to why they can't do well in hockey. Plenty of other schools have become national title contenders in a rural, remote location. It won't be like the Walsh era, but its very hard if not impossible to do that for any school in today's landscape, not just Maine. It mostly comes down to the head coach hire. A great coach who can build a team with an obvious vision and create excitement for the future can put any program on the map in a short period.

I agree with you.
Ive long ignored the location excuse. Just look around where hockey is played, plenty of rural areas. In fact rural is good.

Coach, coach, coach.
Money, money, money.
Kinda like realestate.

I watched both Lowell games and honestly it was the strangest series I can remember. I definitely wouldn't have expected Maine to score or concede as many as they did. They had a horrible start last year as well and turned it around which gives me hope this year. At this point though if Maine could attract someone like Greg Moore it probably is the way to go.

I've spent some time this year going back and honestly if you look at the bigger picture since Shawn passed it's pretty sobering. Maine's recruiting really went off a cliff from 2005 on. And to be brutally honest if you look at the period right after he died there were a number of things that went Maine's way that just wouldn't happen now. You had three really good players from Maine(Damon, Moore, and Duffy) and half a dozen who sat out a year(Doyle, Ryan, Shields, Penner, Leveille, Damon). You take those guys out of the mix and that period looks completely different.

Maine has had some good classes since 2005 but they are mixed in with a lot of poor ones. And beyond that when you look at the players individually there are a lot of guys who are on the top couple of lines who are just okay to good. This is something that has held back both Timmy and Red. If you look at last year's team and could somehow swap Drobot and Schmidt for Vesey and Byron Maine would be an absolute lock for NCAA's and probably in the mix for frozen four.

I'll certainly support whoever Maine has for coach but I don't anticipate things drastically improving quickly. Whoever is the coach is going to have to find talent in unusual places which isn't easy in today's world.

OKAAAAY... (And make mine a double, while you're pouring.)

My last few brain cells say that Maine is going absolutely nowhere anytime soon.

That's pretty feckin obvious, and has been for YEARS.

You nailed it here. And to that end, it's quite obvious that Red is not the guy. He's never going to build a team capable of winning a national championship. However, I will stand by that you could do much worse than Red has done. We could have had Micheletto, for example, who's tenure at UMass was far worse than Red's has been at Maine. The other part that you hit was on money, which its unclear if the administration is willing to spend it. If they're not, Red might be close to the ceiling of what Maine is capable of with their current budget, unless they get lucky and capture lightning in a bottle with a young guy for one year and pop one off before he goes to get a raise at a school willing to pay more.

If Red is the ceiling, then there's no point in Maine having a hockey program, period.

3-2 hahaha. Defense is a non-factor. Westerlund takes a stupid penalty after the celebration that would have him sent to the void in Walsh days.

Tralmaks hasn't been much of a presence this year. He definitely benefited from some version of pearson/doherty/fossier on his lines for the past three years. He's definitely best-suited as the first forechecker on his line.

Westerlund has been much improved but the other Europeans seem way off the pace. Schmidt with two horrible penalties in first period.

How many times has Maine caught iron on breakaways this year? It seems like that has been the result every time.

Hahah i think i've seen dawe ring 3 posts now. Maine scores an ugly goal to make it 4-3, but in classic fashion give up a **** one to a kid who hasn't scored since january 2020. Ugly one for Thiessen. You can't win with this goaltending.

The weird bit is I don’t think he’s a bad goalie. Not sure what is going on in his head.
