Maine @ North Dakota - Oct 14 & 15

Re: Maine @ North Dakota - Oct 14 & 15

Maine definitely outplayed North Dakota in the first two periods, but I thought North Dakota had the better play in the third. Eidsness really played well, and I'm glad to see he, at least right now, looks like he found his game over the summer. I'd still like to see North Dakota play a bit better in their own zone. 30+ shots on goal allowed is not North Dakota hockey. Also, our powerplay needs to step up a bit. They had moments last night where they played well, but overall it is definitely still a work in progress. I guess that's October hockey :)

Agreed, but the third is when Maine spent most the period in the box! Can't wait for tns game.

Nobody can really say that Diamond lost the game for the Bears but the hit on Blood seconds into a the power play was purely selfish and downright stupid. He's been benched in the past and it sometimes helps for a while but it usually doesn't last.

Who's in for #39 tonight..? Swaverly/Amstoy or maybe Freshman Antonelli..? Any thoughts.

Re: Maine @ North Dakota - Oct 14 & 15

article in the BDN quoted whitehead saying that Diamond will be benched. Sullivan will get the start in net tonight.

diamond plays hockey.
did you see hegarty chasing and missing and chasing on UND's first goal?
three players went untouched by Maine D, getting off 4-6 shots including follow ups.
DIamond would be right there knocking someone into the net, preventing an easy goal... The D poke checks.

Maine is toast tonight without Diamond keeping Hakstol's goon squad in check.

(and don't get me wrong... I LOVE the Green and White Goon squad... THEY PLAY HOCKEY)

It was Beattie on the corner of the net who didn't check him on the inital shot or on the follow ups. Coach Whitehead has to send a message to the team that they can't take stupid penalties that hurt the team. If he takes a team penalty there would be no problems, but ruining a teams pp in the last 5 mins of the game is inexcusable. HOpefully he learns his lesson and gets back out there and has them taking penalties on him not vice versa.

Joey should have been benched in the third period last night to send the message to the "team".....not tonight. Shows that the coaching is confused......... Joey needs to be in the lineup tonight.

Maybe but its stupid hockey at times. Maine needs him in the lineup, he might be the only guy who is willing to take a beating and give a beating on the team. Prestin was the same way but Prestin figured it out, Joey hasn't

It's a frustrating mix to struggle with. Sioux fans have faced it with Hextall and Prpich in recent years, though I'm not sure their talent level was up there with Diamond.

Re: Maine @ North Dakota - Oct 14 & 15

Thanks. This will be first time watching one of your games this year, so it will be interesting to see how your team looks. Tried to watch part of the Ice Breaker, but the feed was fubar. Though it's still really early, the WCHA is shaping up to be pretty interesting this year.
I think you'll see we're not very good, yet. Very little sustained offensive pressure beyond the first line, pretty ragged special teams, lot of odd man rushes.

There have been some bright spots. Eids played great last night, and that was fun to see.

It's fun to be reminded of the talent of Kristo, Nelson and Blood. Ben has really stepped into a leadership role this year already. He will be a force.

I've been very impressed with Nick Mattson. Good poise with the puck. I think he is really going to be a good one for us. Parks, MacMillan and even O'Donnell have shown signs they're capable of being very good players. Panzarella has played with a lot of confidence.

It'll be a work in progress this year, a fight for home ice and a berth in the tournament, but I expect the coaching staff will be able to turn them into the types of players were used to see in GF.

UND went 3-5 on the power play on Saturday so I think that they woke up a bit.

They did. As was pointed out, they got some help because two of them were 5 on 3's, but overall I thought their power play looked a little better.

Obviously, still a big work in progress. I think one of the trademarks of Hak's teams over the years is the ability to come out of the locker room at the start of the game running full blast, kind of getting teams back on their heels.

I like how this team has played strong, and some of it's best hockey, in the third period, but they haven't yet figured out how to be ready to play at the drop of the first puck in the game. That I expect to change. Slow starts or stretches where the team goes to sleep during the game for 5-10 minutes will kill you in the WCHA, and that's something the younger players have to learn.
