Maine/NCAA

Re: Maine/NCAA

Players say the team is bonding under the circumstances and looking forward to playing a very good Quinnipiac team this weekend. The Black Bears will play Friday and Saturday at Alfond Arena. The investigation is still on going. Here's an article in the Bangor Daily News that only addresses how the team is managing the situation.

I mean how long does it take to do this...I mean this has gone on way too long for it to be just a minor infraction(imo)...sounds like a witch hunt to me...Lewis should have taken the Vermont Job when she had the chance...they intend to make that Program work(Vermont)...while UMaine is at a Dead-end...they don't support or fund this Program...but it seems to be a Throw Away Sport...not that I am against the Womens Hockey,in fact I hope they can turn the corner and make this work.

Re: Maine/NCAA

The NCAA and the University of Maine need to make a decision. They have a dedicated coach in Lewis. I think the players and the program have taken enough punishment. They have played 6 games with only two coaches. The assistants have really stepped up but they have been tossed into a position that coaches prepare for months in advance. Think of the future implications, all the other teams have coaches scouting and recruiting while Maine is busy filling the role of head coach with its assistant coaches. Recruits often visit during this time of year. I think Lewis is punished enough with her below average salary. It seems to me that the NCAA or Maine is afraid to make a decision. Every day that passes proves the lack of support for this program. Lewis should have gone to Vermont for sure. She wanted to stay because she was loyal to the team and her recruits. NCAA and Maine you are big organizations just make a decision the Maine players deserve at least that.

What she accepted in her current contract has nothing to do with the ongoing investigation...which is not to say the investigation should not drag out any longer than absolutely necessary.

No kidding D2D. Just a reference to show lack of support for women's hockey in general at Maine. Lewis should be back now. The NCAA infraction is minor. The investigation should be transparent so everyone could see that Lewis deserves to be back on the bench.

Don't be so sure what you've read in the paper is the entire story...

Re: Maine/NCAA

It appears at this point there were infractions and the Maine administration is trying to determine how to proceed. I would suspect they are exploring all avenues in order to protect themselves and the coach. I am just guessing, but I think one of the strategies may be encouraging her to resign if the violations were serious enough. At this point none of us know and is pure speculation.

At this point, with the coach on leave and the investigation extending, you can be pretty sure that there were infractions and that they were probably not minor (what constututes minor to us may or may not be minor to the NCAA). Also, the manner in which they became known (self-reported or exposed) will have a significnat bearing on how long this takes. In the end, the school has to protect itself first while ensuring that it does not unfairly disparage the coach (in which case she could sue the school). Adminsitrative leave allows the school to protect itself from the NCAA while not prematurely judging/dismissing the coach and risking a lawsuit. Ths student-athletes and the success of the team is generally the lowest priority for the school in these types of situations for non-income producing sports. I wouldn't be at all surprised if Coach Lewis is on leave all season while they conduct due diligence and negotiate a resolution with the NCAA and the coach.

I hope Coach Lewis is reading this......Coach Lewis, I miss you at Mercyhurst and wish you never left. I hope whatever is going on is resolved quickly and you get back to the bench soon. You are a great person and coach.

I agree Mike. Lewis is all that you say she is!

Re: Maine/NCAA

Maine coach steps down effective tomorrow according to sources in the twitter verse. Assistants take over for rest of season.

Re: Maine/NCAA

Not knowing any details about this issue but it is a serious loss for the program to have Maria Lewis depart. The coaching society has tremendous respect for her.

Re: Maine/NCAA

Best wishes to Maria Lewis in the future. I don't know any of the details, but I'm guessing there were multiple issues leading to her resignation. We may never know what the real issues were.

Re: Maine/NCAA

Maine will be facing NCAA penalties. Level 3 infractions on a scale of 1-4 (1 most severe). Maine is instituting own sanctions immediately with less practice time and more days off each week. National search after the season. More info here at the Bangor Daily News.

Thanks Runsub. You were right all the way through. Any idea how the players are responding? Must be tough. That said, there's also a chance to pull together and rally. Do the girls believe that the administration has their best interests at heart? Seems to me that would make a difference.

Not sure how a coach misunderstands that they can't be attending captain's practices.
Whoever said she misunderstood. Lewis is not the first and won't be the last coach to have been in the arena while captains is on. Their offices are in the same building. Coach Lewis is a great coach that got caught involved in a minor infraction. I think the result is way over the top. Now we will punish the players with more time off. The team has already scrambled to pull practices together , scale back efforts to recruit, lost a head coach.

That's too bad. IMO, she added interest to the game and would have in time made Maine a contender. I wish her well in whatever is next in her life.

This may turn out to be a blessing, she made Maine a tough opponent in Hockey East with limited resources/facilities. There are several programs that could benefit from her experience, ability to teach the game and her competitiveness. I would not be surprised to see her trade up. Best of luck!
