Re: Maine Hockey: Summer 2015 on the Stillwater
My guess would be eight hours on a bus and only a couple hundred fans in the stands would be a big part of why they played so poor in NJ. I didn't see the UMA game but it seemed like they had a bad five minute spell in the second period then obviously some awful luck in ot. I did watch the Princeton game and it seemed like they didn't have a ton of energy. Princeton is obviously not great but they do have a decent goalie so maybe that was just a bad matchup. I think Maine will sweep them in a couple weeks. This probably sounds crazy but the freshmen are actually much better than I expected and I think the quality of play has been very positive even if it isn't necessarily reflected in the standings.
I've got no problem with last night's effort. But how does this team play games like it has for the last three, but end up losing to UMass and Princeton? They seem to play up to, or down to, their level of competition each week.
Now, if they continue to bring this same effort when they play Vermont, and Princeton again, and NU and UNH, you're right, we should win some games. But so far, we haven't seen it, and until we do, people are gonna be negative.
That said, though, upperclassmen need to step up. Or the freshmen just have to say phuckit, and take the team away from them. If i'm someone like Musil, or Tegeler or Hayes, and I'm sitting in the stands game after game, I get a chance to play I'm gonna give my dammdest to do something with it.
