Re: Maine Hockey: Summer 2015 on the Stillwater

Can you Maine fans please stop crying? Your opinion of your own team seems to be even lower than my opinion of your team which is pretty d*mn low! I'm starting to feel sorry for you and I'm afraid that will take some of the fun out of hating you this weekend so can you please show a tiny bit of optimism? Thanks!

Maine is playing great! They took BC all the way to the end of each game. Maine will sweep UML this weekend.:D

It's mostly just these young bucks who worry about every little thing. Comes with the age

Re: Maine Hockey: Summer 2015 on the Stillwater

Split this weekend...UML wins @ Home and Maine win's there 1st game of the season @ Home...with McGovern backstopping the win. Look for both games to be low scoring.

Re: Maine Hockey: Summer 2015 on the Stillwater

Shocked if they don't

Hope you're right, but, as I always say: you can't teach quicks and you can't teach hands... Too little of both on Maine.

Having seen UML just once, I'm predicting that they sweep my guys, something like 2-0 and 3-1.

(PS: The Lady Bears missed the FH NCAA's by a whisker, but Stanford really had the better body of work. No real gripe there...

Great season just the same. Consider going to a game or two next year, when they'll be even better. I just started watching this sport last year, and it's very similar to ice-hockey, excepting that the players are better-looking, and Maine wins a lot more often on the turf. :p)

Hey Drew no offense but how you see this team winning 12 games is a dream. They'll be lucky to score 12 goals for the season let alone win 12 games.

Were you at the game tonight? Maine played seriously well. I don't think anyone can realistically expect Maine to beat the number five team in the country in their rink, but Maine came ever so close. Byron and Gibson both had guild-edged chances in the third but couldn't convert. If Maine plays as well the rest of the year as they have the last three games theyll easily win 12 games.

Did you see the game, were you at the game

Drew will just continue to say this after every loss

I was indeed at the game. Folks who are upset at losing by one goal when you're playing the number five team in the country in their arena are insane. The schedule gets much easier after this.

Excellent effort by Maine last night. Red has them playing pretty well. They will be fine, patience

Re: Maine Hockey: Summer 2015 on the Stillwater

I found this quote from CHN. Sort of summarizes how bad Maine's offense is.

Let’s put it like this … Robert Morris’ Greg Gibson has only two less goals in eight games as Maine has in nine games and Austin Ortega at Omaha, who has played the same number of games as Maine, also has scored only two less than the entire Maine team. There are players Maine came into the season certainly relying on for points that just aren’t producing. Nolan Vesey, who will sit Friday’s game after Hockey East suspended him for spearing, has no points in nine games after scoring 10 goals and 13 assists last season. Blaine Byron had 27 points in 39 games last season and has three through nine games as a junior. There are others, too. It’s basically the entire team. The frustrating part for Maine fans is that the goaltending, which also could have been perceived as a question mark heading into the season, has played great. Rob McGovern and Matt Morris have combined for a .922 save percentage. It’s the Black Bears’ NCAA-worst 3.8 shooting percentage that is plaguing the team. … I believe the 2006-07 Merrimack team is the worst scoring offense ever on record for a Division 1 team, scoring only 37 goals in 34 games. Even that team shot 4.9 percent, which is a full percentage point better than Maine.

Again, I have never intimated that Maine doesn't play hard or had chances. But if you can't score goals you can't win games. Going .500 over the rest of the season would get them to 12 wins. And yeah they play Princeton...who beat them already....and Colgate and N'Eastern. Who else are they going to easily beat? I'm not upset at the effort they are giving. I'm just being a realist. They have 11 goals for the entire season, 1/3 of the way thru. 7 of which came in 2 games. Averaging 1.1 goals a game doesn't translate to W's. They have a bunch of 4th liners up front and that's not going to miraculously cure itself.

You're not going to score goals unless you are creating chances though. I think to some degree they are not confident in front of goal right now. Once the goals start going in and they win a few games it will be easier.

Your right with that this team has 4th liners with a few that could be counted on as 3rd liners on a good to very good teams...and that's the problem you can't EXPECT that these players will become 1st/2nd liners over night or for that matter this season, not going to happen(sadly but facts are facts)...but a bright spot imo has been Freshman goaltender Rob McGovern...at least that is not a problem area. I figured 8 wins as a low and 12-13 as a high for this team before the season and "IF" somehow a miracle maybe a .500 would have been gravey, but that's not happening, 8/9 wins will be the high(maybe). Next Home stretch will spell how this season goes(13 out of 16 @ Alfond Arena).

Re: Maine Hockey: Summer 2015 on the Stillwater

Pretty crazy schedule you guys have. Was alfond being renovated or something?

Re: Maine Hockey: Summer 2015 on the Stillwater

Was impressed with your goalie McGovern last night. He made several great saves on certain UML goals. I heard prior to the game from a Maine fan that he is actually a walk on. Is that correct?

Yes....we don't give scholarships to the good players.

Nope....only being used for football opponent locker rooms and pee-wee hockey......it's pretty much been abandoned.

I've got no problem with last night's effort. But how does this team play games like it has for the last three, but end up losing to UMass and Princeton? They seem to play up to, or down to, their level of competition each week.

Now, if they continue to bring this same effort when they play Vermont, and Princeton again, and NU and UNH, you're right, we should win some games. But so far, we haven't seen it, and until we do, people are gonna be negative.

That said, though, upperclassmen need to step up. Or the freshmen just have to say phuckit, and take the team away from them. If i'm someone like Musil, or Tegeler or Hayes, and I'm sitting in the stands game after game, I get a chance to play I'm gonna give my dammdest to do something with it.
