Maine Hockey: Summer 2015 on the Stillwater

Re: Maine Hockey: Summer 2015 on the Stillwater

Four players with little or no playing time will play tonight. Muehlbauer, Musil, Cochrane and Norman. Where's Freddy? I think that's his name. The UNB fan who usually provides us with information this time of year.

Sorry, guys. Busy day at work yesterday before driving with my travelling partner in crime to Alfond.

As you saw last night, UNB is really good when they can stay out of the penalty box when playing NCAA Div I teams. The Varsity Reds had 13 new players last season, yet they advanced all the way to the CIS University Cup championship game last March, where they fell to a much more experienced, and better, Alberta Golden Bears team.

Nine of those new players are back this year. UNB only added four recruits this season, including their two new goalies. Both goalies look to be an upgrade from last year. The other two rookies are not dressed, because they're injured.

The Varsity Reds really look forward to playing Maine, not least of all because of the atmosphere at the Alfond. They love the crowd; the biggest challenge has been adjusting to the NCAA referees (not that those in their own conference aren't problematic). From my perspective, this is the best refereeing I've seen at the Alfond for the 7 or 8 UNB-Maine games I've personally witnessed. You might disagree.

Re: Maine Hockey: Summer 2015 on the Stillwater

Looks like Gendron recruited big slow players. Most of them can't handle the puck on their stick very well, particularly under defensive pressure. Romeo wasn't sharp. However, most of the time games will not be won by scoring 1 goal. Maine will probably get better over time, but it's going to be a slow process.

This UNB team was pretty good. Good skaters with speed. They blew by Maine players on several occasions. I can not remember a UNB win at Alfond. I know there was one tie and Maine beat them badly once.

In my limited experience, that is slowest Maine team I've ever seen. Big but slow. What stuck out was there don't seem to be any game breaker players - no Nyquist or Shore or Flynn or Purcell that I've seen in previous UNB-Maine games.

Re: Maine Hockey: Summer 2015 on the Stillwater

Unb beat the Portland pirates and BC already this season. They were good, Maine wasnt. Red has to get this team going. Gibson was alone with goalie at top of crease and put the puck in the corner, how the **** do you even do that? Romeo wasn't good. The d was flat footed. They couldn't win a faceoff.

Yeah UNB is no slouch. I guessing practice isn't going to be much fun. There's a good possibility they have 0 to 1 win going into the end of November. Hopefully Red doesn't lose the team again.

Re: Maine Hockey: Summer 2015 on the Stillwater

Tonight settled one thing for the coaching staff- Romeo ain't the guy. He's out. This was a game, maybe the only game, they could throw him. 5 goals on 24 shots for the Univ of New Brunswick in Alfond. I know nothing about UNB. I think they'd be Div 3 here in U.S.

Every Div 1 coach I have spoken to over the years, after playing an exhibition game against UNB, have said that the Varsity Reds could hold their own in Hockey East. Every season UNB is in the hunt for a CIS championship. They and Alberta are the two best programs in Canadian university hockey.

Re: Maine Hockey: Summer 2015 on the Stillwater

Red appeared pretty ****ed in the post game. He wasn't happy with Maine mistakes that ended up in their net. When I asked him about positives he said that some guys played for the first time this season so they may have made a case for more ice time. He wouldn't name names before he reviewed the video.

He had no comment on UNB's dominance of faceoffs, which was a key factor in their last 3 goals. Oh, other than to say that he want all "orangutan" on the draw that saw the puck go to UNB d-man Gazzola for a goal. He said no Maine forwards went out to challenge Gazzola, but we'd have to draw our own conclusions on why that happened, and why he got so wound up on the bench. (My reading was that the UNB forwards tied everyone up after the draw and maybe should have been called for interference?)

Hi Freddy, welcome back. I agree with you on the refereeing. I thought both teams were well disciplined with few penalties called. There was one play where a UNB player picked up the puck and nothing was called. Good luck the rest of the season.

Interference could have been called many times from my vantage point.

This a Team that has mostly 3rd/4th liners...you can see it...you can't make 3rd/4th liners into 1st/2nd liners...not going to happen...these players are good with a team that has 1st/2nd liners, but to do it they are limited...which means little to no scoring...no game breakers/snipers...long season ahead...glimmer of hope is that Freshman Goaltender McGovern can make it back from the injury list and solve one of many problems for this Team.

As they say "That's Hockey"...calls are made and calls are missed....period.

Which freshmen did you think looked slow?

Which freshmen did you think looked slow?

It was more like the whole group were slow in reacting to plays or making plays. As Walrus mentioned, Cochrane was one of them and Becker was a -2.

Re: Maine Hockey: Summer 2015 on the Stillwater

So Quinnipiac took #9 St. Cloud to the woodshed over the weekend 5-2 and 4-1. North Dakota dominated Vermont 2-0 and 5-2. Seems like Maine isn't quite as bad as some of u would like to think.

On a side note.......Q gets 5 out of their first 6 at home (Holy Cross, Arizona State, Maine, St. Cloud x2.....Union gets first 7 at home (Sacred Heart, BU, Maine x2, Michigan, UNH, RPI).......must be nice!

Last night UNH beat Union 5-2.

Besides winning games and making the NCAA's and competing for national championships, the other major measuring stick is whether or not we're better than UNH. I hope Maine can find its scoring touch before December when we play UNH.

And the night before Union tied Michigan 5-5......what's your point? I could care less what UNH is doing.....they are in the same boat as Maine less 2 national titles.

What these teams are doing are winning games in regulation play...not winning by Gimmick Shoot-Outs..and I know the Shoot-Out is Ok in regular season Tourneys but the bottom line is Maine is no where's near where Quinnipiac and North Dakota are heading...Maine needs to start winning games and NOT having the Coach mad as h#ll in the way they play(which he's responsible for)...or the Players saying all the right things in print...we played bad "BUT" we learned and we looking forward to changing how we play...blah-blah-blah...Both Coaches/Players need to shut up and DO IT on the Ice and behind the Bench...talk is cheap and whiskey cost money.

Re: Maine Hockey: Summer 2015 on the Stillwater

Looks like old buddy Blake James just got out-maneuvered in his new AD spot at Miami. Said yesterday they wouldn't fire Al Golden after their fb team got historically romped and today, surprise, they fired Golden. Not a good look for Blake, he clearly has no power as the boss out there.
