Maine Hockey: Summer 2015 on the Stillwater

Mark Denehey was 3-22-2 and 6-18-3 in years 2 and 3. In year 5 he was 12-13-2 and in year 6 he went 16-8-3.
It took Denehy a while. Maybe that's the norm. But look at Bazin and Leaman's records in their first three years. Major turnarounds.
That said, every situation is different. What Red inherited was probably in substantially worse disrepair than UML or Providence.

I think Army and McDonald could recruit but not coach and Timmy could coach but not recruit. If you look at the guys Red has brought in and the guys he has lined up I really don't know how you can be anything but optimistic.

When I see some offense I'll be optimistic. The last few years have been horrible when considering offense. Can't get a shot thru, take the extra pass to set up a worse shot, dangle too long and let the D get set, you name it, they can screw up getting a good shot off.

I expect a loss tonight and maybe 1 goal

Re: Maine Hockey: Summer 2015 on the Stillwater

Maine started 0-4 last year against much weaker opposition than they have faced this year. It really baffles me how people can be upset with this year's start, especially when most didn't think they were going to be that good anyway.

The start was fine until they didn't show up to play against the Q. That was just a reminder of how it's been for the past six or eight years, and people here are afraid it's what they're going to be seeing a lot more of over the season. Red either needs to light a fire under these guys, put a team out on the ice that comes to play every night, and play hard, smart, and fundamentally sound, or he's just not the guy for this job. That's just how it is.

Do you mean pessimistic?

Re: Maine Hockey: Summer 2015 on the Stillwater

Four players with little or no playing time will play tonight. Muehlbauer, Musil, Cochrane and Norman. Where's Freddy? I think that's his name. The UNB fan who usually provides us with information this time of year.

I mean who? We were told USHL guys were the answer, we got a team full of em and they're not good. I'll believe it when I see it, a bunch of bloggers who keep swearing that the recruits are good doesn't mean chit to me. Same guys who think Northeastern's going to be good every year......at least Tim only lost to Bentley once.

You haven't seen McGovern yet ?

Who told you USHL guys were the answer? I honestly could care less what league they come from. Red had zero of his guys his first year, four or five last year, and around a dozen this year. Even this year it is only around half the team. It's going to take a couple more years until it is all his but I think so far his recruits have looked pretty good. If nothing else they all look like they have the athleticism to be decent DI players.

Pretty much the truth...we've seen/heard it over and over...but the Product on the ice is what it is, and with that said nothing to be excited about. Like you said Rufus "That's just how it is". Gendron has to know that it's his Product...plain and simple.

Re: Maine Hockey: Summer 2015 on the Stillwater

A good goalie is the key, if he learns to put rebounds into the corners the team will look ok. The sample size is still small so we will see

You could say the sample size is small, but what more is there to see. He's a huge butterfly goalie that takes up a good part of the net and moves well side to side. Sees the puck with a good glove... not much else there to see. I mean his game is simple.

Re: Maine Hockey: Summer 2015 on the Stillwater

Gone are the days even substandard Maine teams could beat UNB. We have reached a new low.

You're way too pleased with a couple ties, one of which was a win they blew, and one of which could easily have been a blow out without stellar goaltending. Maine is not good, and the fact that they got three ties in a row to start the season was a fluke.

I'll be surprised if they get more than 5 wins!

Tonight settled one thing for the coaching staff- Romeo ain't the guy. He's out. This was a game, maybe the only game, they could throw him. 5 goals on 24 shots for the Univ of New Brunswick in Alfond. I know nothing about UNB. I think they'd be Div 3 here in U.S.

The no scoring thing....the can't win a face off thing...I can't believe they are this weak. Vesey, Brown, Swavely, Byron = 2 goals - 3 assists- 5 points amongst them. Every one of these guys is a capable scorer. We have seen it. Something doesn't feel right. Five games into the season, something's not right.

After weekend 1, I had a pretty good sense of optimism. Right now, I'm a little edgy.

New Brunswick beat the Portland Pirates (AHL preseason roster but still) before they took on and beat BC...

Unb beat the Portland pirates and BC already this season. They were good, Maine wasnt. Red has to get this team going. Gibson was alone with goalie at top of crease and put the puck in the corner, how the **** do you even do that? Romeo wasn't good. The d was flat footed. They couldn't win a faceoff.

Re: Maine Hockey: Summer 2015 on the Stillwater

Looks like Gendron recruited big slow players. Most of them can't handle the puck on their stick very well, particularly under defensive pressure. Romeo wasn't sharp. However, most of the time games will not be won by scoring 1 goal. Maine will probably get better over time, but it's going to be a slow process.

This UNB team was pretty good. Good skaters with speed. They blew by Maine players on several occasions. I can not remember a UNB win at Alfond. I know there was one tie and Maine beat them badly once.

The view I had showed the puck going off Dubeau's stick. Gibson couldn't lift the puck.
