Re: Maine Hockey: Summer 2015 on the Stillwater

I also noticed that. I read it though a couple of times to be sure but you are right. No mention of Maine in any way shape or form besides the little blurb in the heading. I figured someone just forgot to add the Maine game.

Glad to see Ben get the recognition! Speaking of recognition did anyone read the Hockey East weekly release??? Aside from being mentioned in the headline there is no recap of the games Maine played against two national programs, one being #1, there is no recognition of any player achievements (hello Rob McGovern) and obviously no individual award winner? Just sent them an email.

Was at the UND game and happy to see the compete level. Maine needs lots of positive baby steps this year, and good press is also important. Confused as to why Hockey East would totally blow off Maine in their release?

Recognition is nice, but is it doing anything for his pocketbook?

I'm sure it is. This was most likely a preemptive move to keep other programs away from him. I would expect him to be head coach in five or six years. I'm sure some of the 'experts' on here would disagree but I think he has done a great job recruiting. He's gotten legit kids to Maine for little or no money too.

Some are speculating he is being groomed to take over for Red?

Re: Maine Hockey: Summer 2015 on the Stillwater

I would guess Ben is getting a raise for doing a good job, and also guess he is the heir apparent once Red decides to hang it up in 10 or more years? My guess is Guite would make an excellent coach.

Speaking of Red, notice he's shed a few pounds and looks good. A new beginning for him and his team apparently

Good for him. He was a walking heart attack as he waddled across the ice.

We find out if last weekend was a fluke this weekend. Is the commitment to defense for real.

Re: Maine Hockey: Summer 2015 on the Stillwater

Had a great time in Maine for the week! My lady friend and I spent a couple days in Camden/Bar Harbor before meeting the rest of the family in Portland on Thursday. The leaves were excellent and it was great being able to run for miles and miles with all of that oxygen. Coming from Mircrobrew heaven/Colorado I can say you guys have some great brews up there. Unfortunately, by the end of the trip I was pretty tired of seeing the domestic's, plus just the Allagash White and Pumpkinhead. Still, both of those were excellent. Really liked the Real Ale as well.

Outside of the first 5 minutes of game 1, UND played really well. Saturday's game against Maine was exciting and despite the tie (SO loss?) there's a lot of excitement about our team. The forecheck was buzzing all night and I was surprised how difficult it was for Maine to get out of their zone even when they had clear control of the puck. Obviously, would have liked to see a few more goals go in but I'll take it. I had 4-5 Maine fans come up to me during the weekend and tell me how well UND fans travel. It worked out well for us, turning the weekend into a family reunion but it was nice to see UND fans scattered throughout the arena.

We finished out the weekend by watching our Packers beat the Rams, then hopped the ferry to Peaks Island during sunset and for dinner.

I'm really hoping I make it back in the future. My sister may be moving out of your great state so I won't have as much of an incentive to visit.

Glad you enjoyed the experience. I think Portland did a great job with the tourney and hope to see more in the future.
You guys are loaded with talent and speed and think it gave Maine trouble getting out of the zone cleanly. Admit I am used to seeing big physical teams out of UND so this was a bit of a surprise. No doubt you will have a great season with that much talent.

Re: Maine Hockey: Summer 2015 on the Stillwater

So Jim and Dave, the hockey nitwits who do the weekly predictions here, have again both picked Union to sweep the weekend. I agree that Maine needs to gain respect. But I think they will go into Messa Rink and surprise a few people. The play and the effort I saw at both games last weekend was a real major step or two up from anything I saw last season. No Dak and Mich State are clearly not programs to sneeze at. Good luck Black Bears. Go up to Union and turn a few heads!

Also, it will be very interesting to see what transpires in net this weekend. Same two guys? Will Romeo get a shot? Can McGovern throw another one hitter?

I'm thinking that McGovern and Morris get each a start this weekend with Remeo playing next Friday versus New Brunswick...just a gut feeling.

Well, Maine's got this whole tie thing figured out... McGovern does the job again, 2 goals allowed in 2 OT games - 71 saves on 73 shots on the season...

Glad you like the Real Ale. One of my favorites and I live walking distance to the brewery in Bar Harbor. My brother in law lives in the Portland area and wants to go to Atlantic Brewing every time he visits up here.

Re: Maine Hockey: Summer 2015 on the Stillwater

I think things will loosen up a bit tonight at Union. I'll go with a 2-2 tie.
