Re: Maine Hockey 2014-15 Volume 2: Red's Revenge

Right on...this is on the WHOLE TEAM: Players & Coaches. Hopefully they realize that its Maine on the front of that hockey sweater.

You know, I may be showing my colors when I pick favorites, and by picking favorites I don't want to throw anybody under the bus. We all know the team as a whole didn't perform to expectations, and really a Maine team underachieves if they don't overachieve. Rutt was one of those players that fans sometimes were annoyed with, but he played with a lot of pride down the stretch and in my opinion he was someone who worked hard, and I'm going to say overachieved. Yeah, he may have set the bar low early, but in the end he exceeded expectations and proved to be a great leader and served as an excellent role model for the younger guys on the roster. As far as coaching goes, I am still a supporter of the current coaching staff, but it remains to be seen if they can live up to the hype because so far they haven't lived up to expectations. We all knew they had their work cut out for them, but for whatever the reason it doesn't seem like players were as responsive as you'd think they would be to coaching demands because the players were so inconsistent in applying themselves during games. We all knew things were going to be a process in turning things around, but time has been ticking and next year is going to be very telling: Maine must overachieve.

They could get double digit wins depending on goaltending, incoming recruits, off-season development, and chemistry. You never know, but .....Maine will have to overachieve to win more games than this year.

Re: Maine Hockey 2014-15 Volume 2: Red's Revenge

I don't get blaming the best players on a team for the team's lack of success. Maine had two top level players and a bunch of guys who would struggle to crack a 3rd line on a really good team. It's not Shore or Hutton's fault that was the case.

Shore and Hutton were > decent, but they played like 2nd-liners all year long IMO... Maine didn't have anyone looking like a top player on a good team from where I sat.

Still, from top-to-bottom, they were in the same ballpark as the better teams they played.

I don't see anything changing with the incoming class either, at least in terms of talent... Anchors aweigh!

Re: Maine Hockey 2014-15 Volume 2: Red's Revenge

The problem with over achieving is its tough to do for a whole season. You still have to have some talent. I can see a stretch at the end of the season where one might expect a team to overachieve its way into the tourney but to expect them to do it all season is bit much. I think the big question mark for next years recruits is Rai, if he has issues with concussions he may never play at Umaine or if he does it may be short lived. I think the team was counting on him to do some scoring right out of the gate.

Re: Maine Hockey 2014-15 Volume 2: Red's Revenge

Forget about overachieving, how about the coaching staff just maximizing the talent they do have. Overachievement is accomplishing something beyond what is expected. This team has yet to perform as expected so let's start there.

I think that Maine moving toward more American recruits is a good thing........I'm feeling like Canadians aren't as emotionally involved in the college game and don't have that burning desire to beat their rivals like American kids do.....especially those from the Northeast.

Re: Maine Hockey 2014-15 Volume 2: Red's Revenge

Meaning??? Playing for Maine Hockey, not for you or me or for one's self but for the Team sake...Team Hockey/win or lose together and able to look themselves after and say they left it all on the ice.

I stick by what I have been saying all year... they did give it their all, but there just was not a lot of "all" there.

I cannot think of too many selfish plays this whole season, so if you are saying that some of them played for their own accollades or points, I have to wonder what you saw that I didn't

I honestly think you are under the mistaken impression that any of these kids care which team they play for... they are all playing to get to the next level. they seek out the best coach to get them there. If any of them had to go to the farthest reaches of the country for the change to be tutored by Grant Standbrook because Grant took an interest in their development, they would leave their home state in a heartbeat, whether they grew up the biggest fan of their state team in history or not. (ya think Paul Kariya was a Maine fan before Grant spoke to him? And do you think for a second that Paul Kariya is a Maine fan now???)

No.....he is Canadian.

Re: Maine Hockey 2014-15 Volume 2: Red's Revenge

All 4 Kariya kids came to UMaine, Paul must have liked it pretty well

I am pretty sure I have been told that their father was the one behind their coming after Paul came.

i don't think Paul has had much if ANYTHIGN to do with maine since leaving. i DO KNOW that he would not have anything to do with Grant's retirement dinner, he was not even willing to make a little video wishing grant well in retirement. doesn't sound like much of a supporter to me.

I fairness......reports are that Paul has pretty much disassociated himself with the game of hockey in general and doesn't associate with many former people in his life......including some that have nothing to do with Maine hockey.

When the Anaheim Ducks had their big night honoring Teemu Selanne, Teemu himself - one of Paul's closest friends - couldn't get PK to come back for just one night. He loathes the hockey world and it is very tough to blame him. Who knows what he has to go through on a daily basis on account of all those crushing hits he routinely received during his playing days.

Desire to win knows no borders. I would love Maine to get back to recruiting in Quebec. There's tons of talent there and Maine's proximity ought to work in its favor.

I never wonder what you see...you seem to see it all...no matter what/when/where...you've got the answer or riddle me this quote...which is fine with me...your in your own world.

I would love UVM to do the same but I gather it is much harder to do than in years past. UVM got St. Louis, Perrin, Cote, Ducharme, Boyce and a few other really good players (as well as being great locker room guys) from Quebec. It would be great to see more of them south of the border.

Re: Maine Hockey 2014-15 Volume 2: Red's Revenge

Scott Darling looking great so far tonight. Facing Talbot of the NYR, who went to UAH (!). Anson Carter just commented that neither of those guys went to "traditional hockey powerhouses"...

Nice to be lumped-in with Huntsville. Is there any doubt that Maine's cachet has expired?
