Re: Maine Hockey 2013-2014 - Red Light District

PWR was updated a few minutes ago and it has Maine tied for 11th. The team directly in front of them... Northeastern in a tie for 9th.

Also, hockey east standings has Maine at third and Northeastern at 4th right now.

I'm guessing it is going to be a war next weekend.

Congratulations to the University of Maine Baseball team for their win over Miami tonight, 3-1!

Pretty much. I think that if Maine can split with NU and Providence the next 2 weekends and win their Q-final series........they'll be in pretty good shape for an NCAA spot. Thank god that HE is so strong this year!

Re: Maine Hockey 2013-2014 - Red Light District

I've never been to a game before tonight where a goalie was called for diving. I'm glad that call wasn't against us, but that was one of the worst officiated games I've seen in a while. What a great finish though!

Re: Maine Hockey 2013-2014 - Red Light District

Interesting game. MC got Maine frustrated and tried to take advantage. Maine lucked out on the reviewed goal and Devin puts in a clutch goal. Big 4 point weekend, need some points next weekend now

What was the call on the disallowed goal, high stick?

Even Dan and Larry seemed mystified by the call. (Not that I'm surprised that Larry was.) :p

Is there any other program in college hockey charging $50 for a seat?

Tell ya what, I've been to dozens of college venues in the East, and I don't remember paying even $20 for the best seats available... $50 for a RS game is pretty outrageous, IMO.

All that aside, Maine under Red is so far ahead of schedule that I'm actually looking at the possibility of seeing them in a Regional this year... It's fun to be a Maine fan again!

Dennehy said afterwards that they said his guy knocked it in with his arm/elbow.

Team basically controls its own destiny going into the last two weekends of the year, which is a pretty sweet position to be in.

Re: Maine Hockey 2013-2014 - Red Light District

Yup.

The way I see it right now, Maine will be in with two wins against either one of those teams, or two wins against one of each. (But the math is very hard to figure-out, and I certainly could be wrong.)

Re: Maine Hockey 2013-2014 - Red Light District

Interesting how MC makes Maine play its game and Maine gets sucked in to a penalty fest. Also when was the last time anyone shadowed a Maine player(Lomberg). Game will be remembered for a Dive by a goalie who actually gets hurt on the play. Wish I had a replay of it. Haven't seen NU play, know they have a good goalie. I think splits both weekends but would love to see 6 points, tough task I think.

Re: Maine Hockey 2013-2014 - Red Light District

Missed all the video last night due to family thing . Must have been a sweet dive by Marrotta to get the call... lol. Probably a 9.5 ?:). Hurt himself huh.... maybe he learns a lesson :D. Hate playing MC period... usually just a cheapshot slugfest. Points will be tuff hereon out, but if they want it bad enuf, the Gahdin is clearly within reach. Red, Jay and Benny are doing a remarkable job thus far. Dam that Shore sure is a money player.

Same old game plan by Merrimack all weekend long...pushing the card on every play/faceoff...whatever it takes to creep under the other teams skin...I mean after awhile maybe playing some hockey would be a change for the better in their team and record, but that is learned and brought to the fore front by their Coach and the players he brings in...even a talented Collins made a fool of himself play after play at the faceoff dots, skating back to the bench, crying to the Refs...they do have some talent and the Coach but they will never learn...play good one season or two, fair the next two...visit the cellar for a few seasons....that's there recipe...glad to see them gone.

So on the Olympic play of former BlackBears:

Jimmy Howard - hasn't played yet and appears to be the third goalie behind Quick and Miller. Was the back up to Miller this past game and didn't play.

Gustav Nyquist - has played a little over 20 minutes spanning 3 games. Looks like he isn't getting much ice time. Has no stats.

Matthius Trattnig - is a -2 with 9 shots on goal. Near the top in minutes played for his team. Austria is 1-2-0 and has been outscored by 8 goals. So not a strong team it seems.

Now that the end of the year is near who is your favorite freshman and who of the freshman is going to have the biggest year next year. I say: Brian Morgan, 15G 25A.

Re: Maine Hockey 2013-2014 - Red Light District

I like Cam Brown, he has a compete level second to none. A summer in the weight room will really help

Yeah, this guy Morgan impresses me more and more each game... and Brownie too. But I dunno, Shurhammer just is so steady back on D. This was/is a solid class.

Re: Maine Hockey 2013-2014 - Red Light District

Here is a list for me in the order of how good I think they've played:

1. Cam Brown
2. Eric Schurhamer
3. Dan Renouf
4. Blaine Byron
5. Brian Morgan
6. Josh Henke
7. Brady Campbell

I think how Cam Brown is playing right now is spectacular for a freshman. He is very quick. Has a great stop and go ability. Makes nifty plays and isn't afraid to go inside and be pesky in the crease. Seems to lug the puck with ease on the transition game. And he seems responsible in his own end. I would say he has the chance at getting the big stats next season. 30 points wouldn't shock me.

Schurhamer and Renouf are tied for the lead in the +/- rating at 13. They have played together a lot and have done very well. They both play both ends of the ice well and their contributions have been fantastic.

The remaining 4 forwards are very solid as well. I like how Morgan and Campbell play physical. I think Bryon has some great skill that will flourish. Not sure if the injury has slowed his play. Henke also seems to have some good skill and takes some great shots.

I mean, I watch Brady Campbell play and I like how he plays the game. A 4th liner that finishes his checks, battles well on the boards, has an occasional nice offensive play. There was on nice pass he made last game and unfortunately I think it took Merchant by surprise because he wasn't in a ready position to capitalize on it. So there is nothing to not like from this freshman class in my opinion.

Overall I think this freshman class is outstanding. It is very much in line with last season's freshman class. These two classes are really allowing Maine to grow and improve.

I left Nugnes off my list because he hasn't played and I haven't seen him. However, it may not be shocking to say he has the biggest impact next season??? He is probably getting a lot of work in at practice. Not sure if Morris is since he was injured this season and is a medical red shirt (I think???).

Re: Maine Hockey 2013-2014 - Red Light District

Hopefully Morgan has good leadership skills. Be cool someday for the Mainers to set sail with the captain... :D
