Remember the Governors Cup...Maine/UNH/Vermont/UML...lasted 4 years.
UML was the team along with the other 3/not UMass...the 1st year they played @ Maine...Maine beat Vermont 2-1 in Overtime/goal by Steve Karyia...Vermont had Tim Thomas and Martin St.Louis...they went on to play in Cincinnati in that's years then to be named Frozen 4...Maine could not go to the NCAA's because they were under NCAA Sactioned Suspension.Insert UMA, drop UML, and that was was fun: bragging-rights for all the flagship NE State schools were in the balance.

Yes indeed...Vermont had a very good team...and Maine did also...only they couldn't go to the NCAA's...that was back when they had only 12 Teams compared to the 16 now...another standout for Maine in that game & season was netminder Blair Allison.Eric Perrin played on that team also, and was second only to St. Louis in career points.
Sure, if you want a second doormat to pair with Vermont.
So UML has become a perennial powerhouse, or something..? (Not so fast; Lowell is still working on that one.)
My point was that the old Governor's Cup included the main campuses of four State schools in NE, and that Mass-Amherst is still the putative representative of the entire system.

Conor Riley is listed as a F/D, so if you count him as an F, there are only 9 D on next year's roster. On the other hand, if Riley is an F, we'll have 14 returning fowards (only Anthoine and Swavely are seniors), and four coming in (Pecararo, Badger, Widmar, and the Englishman), for a total of 18. Plus four goalies, including Strickrott. Current roster = 28 players (7 D, 15 F, 1 F/D, 5 G). Next year's roster = 31 (9 D, 17 F, 1 F/D, 4 G). We may have to get more lockers. One defenseman graduating, three coming in the fall. That makes ten on the roster. Will Red carry ten or will we see some shown the door? Williams/Norman.......Rutt?
And no "Shawn use to have 57 guys on the roster"

Pretty sure Riley is staying on D. He's been pretty solid all year. So the returning D include Rutt, Hutton, Riley, Norman, Williams, Renouf, Schurhamer. We have 2 incoming D-men in Hayes and Hamilton. Not sure where you are getting the third? Maybe Spicer? He is slotted for fall of '15 or '16 per Larry's article and Spicer himself. So that makes for 9 d-men for next year.
As for forwards...returning are Higgins, Cerretani, Leen, Shore, S. Swavely, Lomberg, Merchant, Tegeler, Brown, Morgan, Byron, Henke, and Campbell. That is a total of 13. Incoming are Pecararo, Badger, Widmar, and now Musil for sure. Vesey is listed as '14 or '15, but I think it would be madness to not bring him in after the year he has had for the South Shore Kings.
For Goalies...Returning is Morris, Strickrott, and Nugnes. Incoming is Romeo (tbd possibly, seems to be having a poor season in the USHL). That makes for 18 Forwards, 9 D, and 4 Goalies.
It seems you like the thought of players getting kicked to the curb, who do you think will not be asked back? One defenseman graduating, three coming in the fall. That makes ten on the roster. Will Red carry ten or will we see some shown the door? Williams/Norman.......Rutt?

Heisenberg has Spicer coming this fall.
Except when the tournament actually happened, Lowell was the team playing in it.

I understand that UML is the best of the UMass hockey schools of late, but it's not the flagship program in the system.
Don't feed the trolls on this one; if the Governers' Cup is to be revived, it needs to be predictably composed of the four main-campus teams, not picked and chosen on the basis of which one is hot right now.
