Re: Maine Hockey 2013-2014 Part 1: Red Dawn

I wonder if any maine fans on here are going to SLU to open the season?

and if there is a snowball's chance that FOMH can put together a bus in time

anyone?

I'm in.

My tickets arrived today, and I made reservations last week. (Must be Parents' Weekend somewhere up there, as there were no rooms available in Canton or Pottsdam, and only a few left in Ogdensburg... Massena, 30 minutes to the north, still had good availability.)

If any of you are considering making the trip, pull the trigger.

Appleton is a great arena; mostly wood inside, as the Alfond used to be. Last time I was there I saw Prestin take out Rich Peverly, and got to meet Jimmy's mom, who happened to be seated right next to me. Maine won 6-2 (IIRC) and we got back to the bar in time to see Josh Beckett (then with Miami) finish off the Yankees in the WS.

Talk about a perfect night!

Real optimistic about these guys....I say 24 wins....With solid goaltending and a new work ethic, watch out.

Re: Maine Hockey 2013-2014 Part 1: Red Dawn

I watched the last 10 minutes or so and it was boys against men. It sounds like Maine could have won by a lot more. What a debacle UMA has, I wonder how long they'll stay in the top division.

UConn lost to a few A-10 schools after they transitioned too. They lost to a CAA school this year as well. UMass transitioned with their worst team since I started following the program. The Mark Whipple and Don Brown teams would at least be competitive at this point. That being said, there is a problem and it needs to be addressed. I don't know how to fix it. Hopefully the AD does.

Good win by Maine yesterday, and a good showing too. Hope you enjoyed it :)

How's this for a headline?

I suppose that I'm glad Steve Abbott stayed on for six months to handle the Whitehead transition instead of punting. But I'm nervous about the next guy. We've seen the damage having the wrong guy at the top can do to the department.

AND at the same time this could be what needed to be done, bringing in someone that has the UM Sports Programs as his goal...no down the road obstructions...Sports ONLY Job....which in its own is a Job Plus.

The early money is on UM promoting from within. Jack Cosgrove has been rumored to be the front runner, but Laura Reed and Joe Roberts are two strong choices. Please don't let it be the football coach.

Your second two names are who I've heard. Laura Reed is a great professional who would do a good job. Won't be Cosgrove.

On another note, Abbott, Ferguson and Gendron were all at the Cross Insurance Center Gala on Tuesday night. Others could have been there but I didn't see them. Maine Basketball banners are already up as well on the East end of the arena. It really is a beautiful facility, doesn't look like a bad seat in the place.

Which means no new ideas, same ol, same ol

And who would you recommend? Someone who will come, use this job as a stepping stone to a bigger job somewhere else and leave us high and dry in two years? I would like an athletics director who will stay at Maine, who has roots here, who has a 10 or 20-year vision and will actually be here to see if fulfilled. I do not want someone who will only be another temporary AD until Miami, Notre Dame or some other football factory calls on them.

Obviously you take a chance with a younger person with no ties to Maine, on the other hand what makes you think the 2 mentioned have any 10 or 20 year visions, why wouldn't they want to make Maine a stepping stone once they are AD? You can't fault someone for moving up

the only people who will have the opportunity to take the next step and go to a top football powerhouse are those who do good things at maine.
let 'em do those good things.
Abbott ain't getting calls and letter from LSU and Alabama anytime soon.

What is considered great? Nero and James might have gotten an A+ on their evaluation each year yet they obviously damaged the program. For me it has to be someone with strong ties to Maine who wants to see the program be successful long term.

Re: Maine Hockey 2013-2014 Part 1: Red Dawn

Like Blake James.

I think when he was offered his position, his resume looked good. not everyone was aware that the Hoceky team was in a downward spiral, and as a matter of fact, when Blake left, there were plenty of people on this board who kept singing Timmy's praises and reminding others about all of those frozen 4
's

I do not follow women's squeakball, but iirc, Cindy was Blake's hire, right?
but wasnt Timper [the baseball coach] also Blake's?

last, wasn't the football team at its all-time best when Blake was at Maine? (I do not follow Maine football, either)

Cosgrove would be a good candidate for the AD position. I have no idea if he would be interested. The other two may be professional and be good at their jobs, but I wonder how strong they would be as administrative leaders?
