Maine Hockey 2013-2014 Part 1: Red Dawn

Re: Maine Hockey 2013-2014 Part 1: Red Dawn

Today was media day for Hockey East at the TD Garden. Coaches have Maine finishing in 8th spot out of 11 teams. Meaningless poll really, but adds a little fun to the preseason expectations. For what it's worth (as much as the coaches :D) I have Maine finishing 5th.

I can see Maine finishing higher than 8th, but four things will have to happen:

- Martin Oullette play as well as he did last season.
- Maine needs to find reliable 5th/6th D
- Gendron's up tempo/high intensity style needs to generate more offense.
- Depth issues (BU) and lack of offense (MC) need to rear its head for those teams.

I think with the 20 game schedule a lot will probably come down to luck. A bounce here or there could be the difference between 5th and 8th. Does Maine have any decent defensive defensemen? That is one area that makes me a little nervous.

Four good points. Dan Sullivan played well two years ago and could possibly find it again this year and compete with Ouellette for playing time. If Gendron plays up tempo and "throws caution to the wind", Maine may have goals scored against them by not having enough defensive talent and team depth as you point out. It's going to be fun seeing how it plays out.

I can't say as the coaches got it wrong, as the top returning goal scorers netted just 7.
BUT... last year's frosh class was a lot of fun to watch and has good potential. If the staff can put together 3 with great chemistry, Maine could do some serious damage. Curious to see how Shore progresses. That kid could develop into a big time stud.

He can start by going to the net front not around it.

And he just might under Gendron/Leach. Seems to have a great attitude, got size , sees the ice well and works hard. Think sky's the limit for him if he builds on last year.

Regular Season Tickets in along with Playoff Tickets(best 2 out of 3 series)...My Question is this year every team makes the Playoffs and there will be a 1 game Playoff to decide the 2 out 3 series format...won't there be a possible 1 game Playoff @ the Higher seeded teams..? (11@6,10@7,9@8)..? Seeded Teams 1,2,3,4 & 5 receive byes.

So no Portland Pirates at the CCCC this year. This whole situation between the Civic Center and the Pirates is gross. I don't think you'll see AHL hockey in Portland for quite some time. And it won't be the Pirates when it does come back. Too bad. It's really going to put a hit on local businesses this winter. Not to mention an empty building that's in the process of a multi-million dollar upgrade and the Pirates losing a ton of money this season. Nice job boys. Two giant egos = grade school behavior with everyone losing. Idiots.

Spearing a guy with :35 left in an exhibition game isn't fighting. It doesn't really matter if Gionta's team had an "enforcer" - Joey didn't go after him. He picked about the smallest guy on the ice to go after.

Joey's brittle temper has been his undoing for years. He'll never make it to the next level, but he might hang around the AHL for a bit, if he keeps throwing punches.

Interesting question. I can't find anything on the Hockey East website about the 2014 tournament, but a Google search shows a March 2013 announcement by the commissioner of a tentative league schedule which has an initial set of 2 out of 3 playoffs on the weekend of March 7-9, with the top five teams getting byes. The three winners and the top five teams play each other in a second set of 2 out of 3 playoff series the following weekend, March 14-16. However, there's nothing on the UMaine website or the Hockey East website to confirm that tentative schedule.

Re: Maine Hockey 2013-2014 Part 1: Red Dawn

The team has already been practicing with coaches for two hours a week as allowed by NCAA rules and doing some separate captain's practices. First legit week of practice starts weekend of the exhibition game.

Doesn't the NCAA allow on ice practice with Coaches on October 1st..?
