Maine Hockey 2013-2014 Part 1: Red Dawn

Any chance we'd ever see Bangor native Derek Damon back at his alma mater in some capacity?

According to the paper, he lives in Florida in the offseason with his wife who is expecting and he makes 6 figures (he claims it is all tax free) playing hockey in Europe. Trains with some other pros in the off season. He seemed pretty happy with his current arrangement.

Could someone fill me in on why someone might not like Derek?
I've heard similar comments from a few people in the past and have found that it's always been some sort of combination of them being the parent of a kid who Derek showed up way back in high school and they're still harboring a grudge, or it's somebody who actually doesn't like Derek's dad, whether that has anything at all to do with hockey or is politically based (his father is a republican in the Maine house or senate) it's hard to know. I met Derek a few times when he played at Maine, and he was always a really polite and humble kid and he was a lot of fun to watch as a player and has done pretty well since.

Because he ripped our third consecutive State Championship out of our hands in overtime. :p

I've always thought he was a good player, I just don't see why he'd come back to Maine when he plays in Europe. Maybe after his playing days are over.

I think its more a matter of why would u like derek? Playing at maine means nothing in terms of coaching at maine...derek has zero contacts in prep school, ushl, bchl, etc...he has never recruited a single player, has no idea of yhe player pool, has zero experience coaching...no relationship with red...so I ask u, what in the heck makes u think a guy like that would help dig maine out of the current hole? You realize it takes well over a year in the rinks to hsve a good understanding of the players out there?

Re: Maine Hockey 2013-2014 Part 1: Red Dawn

I actually was thinking of him being a volunteer assistant if Maine got a goaltending guy like Jason Tapp (Union) or Josh Siembida (Yale) in as a second assistant to go with a good recruiting guy for first assistant. As a local guy, I figured he might have a full-time job but would be a volunteer assistant like guys at other HE schools. That is all. You're such a know-it-all, Dover, who do you think will be the two assistants?

And I also didn't ever say this year...I meant down the road, but anyways...

He'd be a great volunteer...I will give u that one...I think ben murphy will be one of the two assistants...

Apparently Javier Gorritti is saying Jay Leach and Ben Guite?

Would make logical sense to go with a pro guy and a recruiter. I doubt leach and guite would be on staff together---needs someone who knows the players...my guess is leach/guite and Murphy...guite is appealing because he is French Canadian. Red speaks French too. Maine used to have a lot of success up there.

That said, so did uvm. The game has changed so much and the qmjhl has a stronger foothold now.

I'd want to know what Jay Leach? Jay Leach and Bruce Crowder were Shawn's first assistant coaches, I am assuming not that Jay Leach, but the one one who just retired. So long as the younger Jay brings his wife to a few games I'd be okay with that!:D

Actually like the thought of having a Guite or a Leach as one of the coaches as both played in the NHL so players can relate to them and recruits will respect what they have to say.

Murphy's experience at Bentley and recruiting in the BCHL (we have not had recruit since Tanner House there) and USHL make tons of sense!

I remember Damon was benched for a game because he skipped a class. He was a a great hockey player at Maine and if Gendron ever wanted him as an assistant I think it would be pretty neat to have someone who grew up in Bangor behind the bench.

Gorriti added: "to clarify, the jay leach that coached at Umaine from 84-89"

You are correct. He didn't play in the NCAA semi-final in Albany, but played in the second game against Michigan State. Maine won and moved on to the Frozen Four.

I'd like to see Gene Reilly come back to Orono as an older assistant and then see Gendron go out and get a young go-getter to scour Canada and the US for talent.
I thought of him also as a under the rader pick...interesting name as a possible Assistant Coach.
