Re: Maine Hockey '13-14: Are you Red-E?

No, but I remember Sokol Kiev. :D

as do i. i'm sure somewhere in the bowels of my parents house is an old vhs tape of a game they played against the mariners in the 80's. complete with dale arnold, c lad in a tuxedo, doing on ice introductions of the entire rosters of both teams....

Re: Maine Hockey '13-14: Are you Red-E?

I don't know how snobbish it is. We have parity in college hockey like we never had in the old days. The best players back then only considered Lake State, Minnesota, Michigan, State and Wisconsin in the west and Maine and BU in the east. We stockpiled NHL picks. Every once in a while a top player went to Denver, North Dakota or Boston College but in the early to mid 90s there really were only a handful of teams. Those teams were in the Frozen Four every single year. After Maine in 1993 we went another 18 years before a first time champion. Now we have had two in three seasons. Top players may go to Union, Providence, UMass, Lowell, Yale, St Cloud, Ohio State, Miami, Western...it really doesn't matter where you go to play your college hockey - the scouts will still see you and you'll get plenty of exposure.

What the heck are you talking about? Top prospects go to any team?...that's just not the case. Notre Dame has 11 NHL draftees. BC has 11 NHL draftees. BU has 8 NHL draftees. Just because top prospects aren't picking Maine doesn't mean they'll go anywhere.

What old days are you talking about? Between 1988 and 1993 there were 4 first time national champions (Lake Superior, Harvard, Northern Michigan, and Maine). NCAA hockey history did not begin in 1993 and end in 1999. Programs have always had ups and downs.

Additionally...yes, there have been 2 "1st time champions" in 3 years but Wisconsin, UNH, Denver, North Dakota, Minnesota, Miami, and Boston College all made the tournament last year. The "old guys" are still doing pretty well...just not UMaine.

Oooouch man....I think Chrissy's down for the count. Good job. :D

Yup, Maine has it all over BC, use guys swept us in our own freaking rink last year and we also got clobbered by Union in the first Rd of the NCAA's. Maine didn't lose a single NCAA tourney game last year, or the year before that if I recall?? It's really tough only winning NCAA titles every other year lately, I'm so jealous of Maine and all their recent success....

Re: Maine Hockey '13-14: Are you Red-E?

BC's 2001 team would have destroyed Maine's 93 team.
Christ, they almost blew it against Dagoata.

I still remember Gionta standing there basking in the adoration of the crowd, with that chit-eating grin on his face, waiting to take the faceoff in his own end, figuring it was all wrapped up, and then BC giving up the tying goal seconds later. Ah, good times.

Re: Maine Hockey '13-14: Are you Red-E?

I think BC had a "slight" bit more going for it when the program hit the skids than Maine does now. Unlike BC, the only difference between Maine hockey and say Bentley, is Shawn Walsh. You watch, Maine is now slowly settling back to its rightful place in the bottom half of the hockey world.

yeah, like tons of scholarships.

I am talking about the fact that 20 years ago you would not have seen Notre Dame on this list at all. Also, while five teams do have the lion's share of top 100 draft picks (27) there are 10 teams with multiple draft picks and another 10 with one. That's 25 different schools with top 100 draft picks. Yes, these elite players will go to just about any school. Certainly more than we saw 20 years ago.

Notre Dame is a top school and will attract top talent just with its name alone.

That's why they have always been a top team.

Never said they were a top team, just that they attract top talent; and they have been ever since they started taking hockey seriously. Most elite players probably at least consider ND, not so much so with Maine though, at least not since Walshy has been gone....

Ohhhh...you mean it's more than just the name after all. Quit trolling and go back to your own thread.

Re: Maine Hockey '13-14: Are you Red-E?

Well obviously if MIT went division one and was playing in a 100 person arena they aren't going to attract the Brian Giontas of the world. There has to be at least some commitment by the university. By the way, BC is looking pretty good tonight, already up 4-0 vs #2 UW. Who knows, we may even be good enough to beat Bentley!!

And 25 years ago Maine wouldn't have been on the list at all

That 9-2 score is terrifying on Wisconsin. All jokes and earlier hatred aside this 2013/2014 BC team looks to be truly scary at the Conte Forum this year...unless Wisconsin laid an egg.

I think its safe to say BC will be a lot better than Maine this year and for the seeable future. Oh well. I think Chris really is a closet Maine fan that's why he is so concerned about the team

I have nothing against Maine, I just find it fascinating that its fans assume that the team's rightful place in the college hockey world is perennial frozen four juggernaut. As I've said before, there was a "perfect storm" of circumstances that allowed Walshy to catch lightning in a bottle, but using a phrase that Rick Pitino made famous, Shawn Walsh is not walking through that door! Not saying Maine can't be a good team, just saying that they're a lot closer to UMASS, UVM, MC and UML than they are to BU, BC or Notre Dame and the sooner you Mainuhs can accept that, the less disappointed you'll be going forward...

They have won more Natl championships over last 20 years than those teams you lump them with combined, in their programs history. Maine us the next Kevel up. Maybe not at BC level but more success than the goats known as Nitre Same. BU is on a downward cycle as well. His many NCAA titles for then since 1993?

Maine 93 woild beat BC 01 80% of the time

Re: Maine Hockey '13-14: Are you Red-E?

I am not arguing that Maine wasn't a powerhouse under Walsh, or that they didn't win a lot of hardware. What I am saying is that like LSSU or Northern Michigan, they were a bright star that burnt out. Kids these days weren't even born when Maine was kicking azz so there's just nothing drawing them there anymore, at least not anymore than they're drawn to UVM or UML.

Unfortunately I think you are right, but I don't see why Maine can't at least make a semi-regular frozen four run. And they should at least make the tournament more often than not. Maine isn't going to be in the FF or even the tournament every year.
