Re: Maine Hockey '13-14: Are you Red-E?

Congrats Maine fans, that was a fun game tonight. I was able to watch it all on cable! Your team looked good. I love the arena and how the balcony is right over the lower section, fans must feel like they are right over the ice. Very cool. Maybe some day I'll make it down there (I used to live in Bangor).

Re: Maine Hockey '13-14: Are you Red-E?

We saw an entertaining game tonight, for sure... The end kinda justified the means, I guess.

Details:

1. Maine put-forth an uneven effort, which they can't afford to do with any regularity. (This team lacks the talent to ever engage cruise-control.)

2. That 2nd UMass goal was a classic Timmy-moment. A one-on-three, and (Rutt?) weakly attempts a poke-check in the low-slot with all kinds of help on both sides of of him..? PLEASE. He has to break those old habits, and take the body in that situation. That shouldn't have even qualified as a legitimate scoring chance, let alone resulted in a goal-against.

3. Shore's stick-handling to assist on the GWG was stellar. He's not a Walsh-Era player just yet, but if he had a finisher or two on his line, he might compile a ton of helpers.

4. Fun game to watch. I appreciate the difference in Red's approach; he just doesn't have the guns to make it work right now. (Still like Byron, though.)

5. It feels better to be a Maine fan this year compared to the last one, even though it's going to be a long hard struggle to regain national relevance... I think the program is on the right road, anyway.

There was a lot to like out there. Red's got them skating hard and already they are much stronger on their skates. obviously much better conditioned this year. Gonna be a fun ride with this group I think. Learning what it takes to win and make the Fond a horror show for other teams. They are rapidly buying into Red's philosophy no doubt. Suspect when he speaks, they listen. Umass has a nice team there...plenty of speed and good goaltending.

Much work still to be done though but a good start.

It was great to hear a coach yelling that wasn't on the visitors bench :)

I still can't believe that no local tv station from Portland/So. Maine which includes the Augusta area is carrying the Maine games.

Re: Maine Hockey '13-14: Are you Red-E?

It was a fun game to watch. Lot of things to like coming away from this one. Two weeks, or a week ago, and they don't win this game. But as was said, they're buying in to Red's message, and they're playing hard. I noticed four or five times the puck carrier getting rubbed out along the boards, but kept his feet moving, broke through the checker, and picked the puck back up on the other side and kept going. That would have been a dead rush under the old regime, as the minute he lost the puck he'd be turning back towards his own zone. Like how these guys battle and scramble to get the puck back if they lose it. Shore's work on the game-winner being a prime example.

And these guys can get the puck out of their own end. Saw lots of times when the player would corral it, he'd pull it back and take a second to see what the smart play with it was, instead of just wildly trying to throw it out of his end. Also, the other team is no longer just standing around in front of our goaltender taking three or four whacks at the puck while the defense just stands around trying to hack at the puck. Puck's cleared into the corner, or out of the zone.

yeah, they still have work to do to erase old habits, as was mentioned on that second goal. I have no idea why someone just didn't level that guy instead of letting him skate right on through. And even the first goal, and several times later in the game, the defense was slow to recognize or get over to that wide winger, who was able to get behind them for good scoring chances several times. And still miss the net way too often. Came out a bit passive for the third, and I had bad feelings about TIMMAY-time, but maybe that's how Red wanted them to come out, stay under control, and don't be flustered.

But on the whole, a lot smarter positionally, and a whole lot more aggressive. I loved seeing the replay of the game-winner, and Leen was just set up right there off the top of the slot, backing up just so slightly, waiting for someone to get the puck to him. Last season, he'd have been behind the net scrambling after it along with Shore and Lomberg. I think in a couple more months, this team might really develop into something, horses or no. They've already come a long way in just a couple of weeks, and they're learning how to win games already, and building a little confidence. Loved when Red called the timeout, and after Jay got done talking to them(imagine that, an assistant coach talking to the players), Red just looked at them and had a huge grin on his face, and I can assume he was saying something like, "having fun yet? You guys wanna win this thing?". And the crowd sounded louder and more excited than I've heard Alfond sound in a long time.

Hope TIMMAY was watching this game. :D

I echo what's been said. It is going to be fun watching this team develop. Last night was fun to watch just from the aspect of they WORKED!! Hard work and determination can make up for other shortcomings. I'm not going to say lack of talent because that's not fair or true. All these kids are talented, just not superstars. Just watching Red on the bench gave me the warm and fuzzy's. Love the direction, love the work ethic. Good things ahead my friends.

As Red was yelling, that was a bullchit call. Ref didn't want anything to do with him wouldn't even go near him. Loved hearing that gruff voice calling out "Hey. Hey!!!!"

I noticed that also, First Jay and then Red with a big smile on his face.

UMass has a little extra jump tonight. Maine pp was awful. Maine looked better toward the end of period.

Re: Maine Hockey '13-14: Are you Red-E?

Maine's lucky to be down by only one after the first. Not moving their legs. Marty's keeping them in it.

Re: Maine Hockey '13-14: Are you Red-E?

Four goals out of the freshman so far tonight. Henke, Morgan, and Brown, and Byron. All of the assists except for two (O'Connor 2nd assist on Byron goal, and Riley on Henke's) have come from the freshman as well.

the kids are alright. also, isn't nice to watch AND listen to Dan without a delay? Or Mahoney.

agreed... though the video is acting a little funky right now.... i enjoy not listening to mahoney's incoherent ramblings....

Re: Maine Hockey '13-14: Are you Red-E?

anthoine from byron and brown makes it 5-0. power play is 2 for 4 (thought they did give up a shorty).

byron's having himself a game. goal and a three of assists.

Re: Maine Hockey '13-14: Are you Red-E?

and rutt throws one in with 4 seconds left in the period.

6 goals in the second for maine...
