Why not just give him 6 year deal from the jump then? .514 to .397 and this year looks to be headed under .300, the optics of rewarding that are just b-a-d. Hasn't even sniffed the Garden much less the NCAAs.

Whats the line they have, national title in 2018? I'll eat my hat.

I assume you mean the AD? Because Red has "been around the game" and certainly around the block. The guy has coached for a million years now.

AD's remark at the announcement. "We are confident in Coach Gendron's ability to continue to build the men's ice hockey program," said Creech. "We believe he is on the right path to success and we are committed to continuing to grow under his leadership."

Not sure I agree with that statement.

He needs to bring in several talented players within two years time in order to compete for a national title in 2018. I wish him well.

I'm not sure what the U could do at this point. Throwing money at a buy out was going to be bad publicity. Not giving him an extension was going to be bad for the hockey team. No doubt the results on ice are bad but this is the first year the team has bought into the systems. They play hard. The problem remains they lack scorers, they lack Dmen who can keep up. Matty has played well the last month but when you score 1 goal per game, you ain't winning much. I guess Red has 2 years now.

We should just start providing retroactive financial aid again. Sure, we'll eventually have to forfeit wins but the ride will be fun in the meantime. Beats watching the boring crap going on now.

If its a financial thing, what's the difference if you're buying him out now or buying him out in two years? (I mean I suppose that they could've worked an easier clause into this extension but barring that kind of minutiae, as long as the going thing is to extend guys an extra year for "recruiting" then no matter what you're always going to be buying out 1 year when you make a change....)

Evidently the people behind the scenes see something that tells them this thing can turn around and they won't have to buy him out after two more years. I don't see it, but I'm not there everyday. I hope I'm wrong.

I don't know about their line but I think the program returns to relevance and competes for the NCAA tournament in 2018. I would not be so naive to say national champion.

This is all true. The results haven't been there, but the work ethic and general overall play of the team has improved. If they could only stay out of the box it would an even better sign, but still.....

That said, there needs to be extensive improvement next season, or the AD should start researching the next head coach, preferably a young assistant at some program looking to make his mark. I'm saying minimum standard for next season is an appearance at the Garden.

Can't compete in your own building with a team you have more league wins than.....I didn't expect much against ND or PC...but to get blown off the ice by Merrimack....

What I said earlier aside, this is pathetic. I don't care how much rebuilding you're doing, how lacking in talent this team may be, they ought to be able to compete with teams like Merrimack. And yet, somehow they can't, and I have to figure a lot of that is coaching.
 
I spent my time in alfond watching for tweets on bball tourney. That's how bad that game was. How you come out that flat on the day your coach signs an extension is beyond me. Certainly won't give you a warm fuzzy feeling about the extension.

Merrimack hadn't won a HE game since November 13th against UMass. Maine allows them to score 4 unanswered goals. Even without talent this should not happen when playing a comparable team. Very sad.:o:(

This team is presently hapless losing to Mack. The improbable sensibility of the coaching extension is just further testament to how bad things truly are. There was little choice in extending Red. But there has to be enormous pressure on next season. Almost hard to fathom the guy actually had a winning record his first season, even with that late collapse. I just don't see where any optimism lies.

I know anything can happen, and they just about pulled it out tonight, but with as bad as things were when they were down 5-1 it pretty well felt like living through the apocalypse.

I certainly don't know the ins and outs of Red's extension as far as the money goes, but there isn't enough alcohol in the world to lead me to believe that it was a good "hockey decision". This program would take years and years to recover any semblance of respectability, even if Scotty Bowman took over tomorrow

Say Maine signed nothing but blue-chippers for the next 2 years, they'd still be a bad team. There is just too much dead weight on board right now... The only hope for The Bears is a Timmy-style purge of most of the roster, and several miraculous recruiting years.

(Not gonna happen.)

No, it doesn't. This reminds me of when Woodward was extended even though there was no apparent reason for the extension since his teams were losing and he was a sh*tty coach. Woodward did bring in a stellar recruiting class after that but they all left the team a couple of years later.......and then he was finally fired.
