Maine Black Bears 2012 - 2013

Re: Maine Black Bears 2012 - 2013

Tough weekend against the Bobcats. Having Brittany Ott out of the lineup didn't help. Offense struggled and may take a few games to get the young players into the offensive flow

Re: Maine Black Bears 2012 - 2013

Nice win against Connecticut in second game. Brittany Ott returned to the lineup and helped the Bears to their first win. Big test this weekend against BU and NU. Both teams are among the best in the country.

Audra Richards is having a nice start for you. A 4-1-5 line in 7 games.

Agree great start! She is a great MN success story - loved the game, best kid in a weak Tartan HS program but was always committed and often best player on ice. She did the T-Breds in the JWHL and found her way to a D1 program - I think Lewis has a diamond in the rough who should only get better.

Nice win in Minnesota over the Beavers! Started slow, but sure got rolling in the third period of the first game. It was a big win for the Black Bears. It looks like the team is starting to get familiar with each other.:)

Yes, that was a nice win against Bemidji. Last year this team played much better on the road than at home. Coach Lewis thought it was because the team was more focused and had fewer distractions on the road. New Hampshire at home this weekend. I'll be there to see them.

Re: Maine Black Bears 2012 - 2013

Congratulations to Brittany Ott for being selected defensive player of the week in WHEA. She had a very nice performance against Bemidji State this past weekend in playing both games.

Agree on the nice performance; she didn't start the Friday game, but played 5 of 6 periods on the weekend.

Maine had two hurdles to overcome today. First, it was the superior talent of UNH. They are a big strong team with good skaters. Second, the officiating was terrible. I'm not making excuses, UNH was the better team. Coach Lewis was visibly upset and had a conversation with the officials at the end of the game. She kept her composure and shook hands with them before leaving the ice. The non-calls on UNH were truly unbelievable. Maine played very good defense and kept a talented UNH team to only two goals. With the number of power plays UNH had it was even more impressive.

Agree there were missed calls, but they went both ways....mostly not calling tripping (which more appropriately should be called stumbling). Ott made some big saves and kept the Black Bears within striking distance.

Missed calls didn't really go both ways. There was a huge disparity in penalty minutes. Maine was penalized 24 minutes and UNH 6. Maine is not the offensive team that UNH is and the outcome may well have been the same. The problem I have is that Maine was not given fair opportunity. Congratulations to UNH on their win.

Well, a 10 minute misconduct plus other penalties for chippy play will add up.

Never been to a hockey game where one team deserved to have more penalties called against them than the other?

The penalties were essentially 7-3 when you take out the misconduct. That is really not all that lopsided, especially when, as you note, one team is more skilled than the other.

Penalties don't have to come out the same to mean the game was called correctly or that calls weren't still missed both ways.

Exactly half of the 24 minutes assessed were for a 2+10, when a Maine defender cross checked Gifford in the back after the whistle. It was a fast paced, hard fought game, and there were certainly calls that could have been made both ways, but I don;t see that as a game changer. The fact that Maine couldn't mount a sustained offense was. Ott was fantastic in net, as usual.

BTW - What's up with the Thanksgiving Day game in Lewiston? Between turkey coma and football, I'd be surprised if anyone but officials and family desperate to see their players on the holiday attend:eek::confused:
