Maine 2012 - The Good, the Bad, or the Ugly??

Re: Maine 2012 - The Good, the Bad, or the Ugly??

Your Sunday guests, the University of New Brunswick Varsity Reds, lost 2-1 in an overtime shootout to the Portland Pirates this afternoon. I don't have any more details (like how many Portland players were part of their AHL roster?), just what moved on Twitter. UNB plays Boston College on Saturday, and then they are back in Maine for the Sunday game in Orono.

Maybe you should send your junior varsity reds to Orono ?? :D

Good one. Years ago the then UNB Red Devils had a junior varsity team that competed in the local junior B or C league, but that's a long while.

Don't read too much into the apparently close games against the Pirates. UNB had played a few AHL or "NHL prospects" teams in the last few years, and sure, they get hyped as a "UNB vs. AHL Team" for marketing purposes, but the reality is that this early in the season the AHL team has got some/several/a lot of bodies destined for the ECHL or lower leagues. Still fun games to watch, and the UNB players REALLY get up for it, but the little secret is that we make a bigger deal of it in Fredericton than it really is.

Update: A UNB fan who was this afternoon's game posted this comment on another board:
Portland has defeated UNB by a score of 2-1. The game was tied at 1 at the end of regulation and Tyler Carroll nearly ended it in OT but rang his shot off the post on a breakaway with about a minute left. Portland prevailed in the shootout. Cam Braes scored UNB's lone goal in regulation.

Carroll is a sophomore who plays left wing on UNB's top line. Braes is a rookie who has been playing right wing on that line. He's UNB's leading scorer through six pre-season exhibition games including today

Who's in net Saturday? Has to be Sully right?

I'm with Wally (shocker), I don't think year will be as bad as some seem to think.....top 5 in the league and a bubble spot in the PWR heading into the last week/HEA playoffs seems do-able.

Re: Maine 2012 - The Good, the Bad, or the Ugly??

Is Maine really good enough to be a 5th place team this year, or are 6-10 so bad that we get there by default?

IMO, this team does not have a ton of top line speed, is diminutive at the forward position, lacks true goal scorers outside of Diamond, and has no reliable puck moving defensemen.

Maybe i'm seeing more problems than there are, but I can envision a lot of games where Maine is trapped in their defensive end because their Defensemen can't move the puck (they're all solid man to man defenders at least), and the forwards lack the speed to create effective counterattack offense. Teams will be able to have their defensemen be aggressive at the blue line and still recover.

With that being said, 5th or 6th isn't unreasonable given the quality of Hockey East's bottom half this year.

Timmy should go with Sully on Saturday and give the nod to both Marty and Matt on Sunday. It may give everybody a sence of where our goaltending might be for the season.

You don't want to get a sense as to how good UNB is this year, Wally??

Re: Maine 2012 - The Good, the Bad, or the Ugly??

I assume all the home games are web-cast again this season? How is the feed? Is it worth getting?

Re: Maine 2012 - The Good, the Bad, or the Ugly??

Anyone know if the Maine/UNB game will be available online...either audio or video?

In the Audio/Video page of www.goblackbears.com it shows links for audio and video feeds for both games this weekend (vs. Quinnipiac tonight and vs UNB on Sunday). The video feeds are $7.95. I listen to most games, but occasionally pay for the live streaming feed. Being a UNB alum, I might watch Sunday's game.

WMEB projects these lines for today's game.

Shore-Beattie-Diamond
Shemansky-Higgins-Anthoine
Riley-S Swavely-J Swavely
Leen-Leidermark-Merchant

Pryor-Cornell
Rutt-Nemec
Hutton-O'Connor

Sullivan will be in goal.

The lineup would look better with Parker and lomberg in it but nothing you can do about injuries. I think the defense is going to be a pleasant surprise. There aren't really any spectacular guys back there but doesn't seem to be much drop off between the pairs. I wish I was going tonight but have a commitment I can't get out of.

Re: Maine 2012 - The Good, the Bad, or the Ugly??

Does anyone know how good the stream is? I'll listen to the game if need be but I'm willing to spend the $8 as long as the stream from the blackbears website is alright.

Re: Maine 2012 - The Good, the Bad, or the Ugly??

Listening to the audio stream and it sounds like Maine is dominating Quinnipiac. Maine is up 1-0 after the first, Steven Swavely with the goal, assist by Jon Swavely. Sounds like the Freshmen are playing good, especially Hutton and Shore...Nemec is apparently putting a hitting show on which I thought whitehead didn't like a lot of :D... Also thought Whitehead said they were going to be a more defensive sided team this year...but sounds like they were in the offensive zone a large portion of the period.. also leading shots 12-3.

Re: Maine 2012 - The Good, the Bad, or the Ugly??

Not good. Gotta wonder if having Joey Diamond on the ice for the latter 2 1/2 periods would've been worth one goal, esp. given all the PP time. Love to hear from someone there how bad the hit was? He's still gotta know better.
