LSSU Lakers 2016-17

Re: LSSU Lakers 2016-17

“The NCAA Eligibility Center is responsible for determining a student-athlete's initial eligibility status based on their pre-enrollment athletic history,” Jen Constantino, LSSU’s NCAA compliance officer and deputy Title IX co-ordinator,” told Taking Note via email. “Brayden and his family worked with the Eligibility Center prior to his enrolment at Lake Superior State University to answer the NCAA's questions and provide them with the information they needed to make their decision.

“The NCAA made the determination that Brayden Gelsinger would be immediately eligible for competition. Our athletic department has followed the direction given to us by the NCAA.”

Hope that helps...

Yeah, it certainly was a giant screw up on the NCAA's part. I have read several articles on the subject and this is certainly going to cause issues for the NCAA moving forward. Clearly it was a screw-up on their part and not the player or institution. The NCAA would have ruled him ineligible in a heartbeat had they been intentionally deceived by either.

No one can fault LSSU or Damon for playing Gelsinger. If this happened at any other school they would do the same thing. If the NCAA says a player is eligible, you play him. Plain and simple.

It's hard to say how much of the blog discussions on this subject are based upon speculation of what the bloggers think happened versus what actually happened. It would be interesting (and helpful) to see an actual statement from the NCAA explaining what happened and their decision as a result of it. One thing the bloggers are out of date on is that a player who played Major Junior automatically has to sit out one season plus the number of Major Junior games played. The NCAA has been more lenient about this recently. Last season, the NCAA said Stephen Bayliss (BGSU) had to sit only the first 6 games of BG's season for playing Major Junior (I think someone on the BG thread said he had played only a few games of Major Junior). The Laker coaches knew Gelsinger had played some Major Junior games and decided to take a chance on him. I believe they expected the NCAA to tell them he would have to sit out X number of games; they were probably hoping it would be a half season or less based upon the Bayliss situation last season, but they had no way of knowing what the NCAA would say. So, yeah, whether the NCAA just totally missed it, or they are becoming even more lenient than anyone expected, we caught a break.

Re: LSSU Lakers 2016-17

Big series this weekend for sure. A split would be a huge step for this team.

Re: LSSU Lakers 2016-17

Ashton Calder scored a couple of goals last night and was first star of the game in a Surrey 5-3 win over Langley in the BCHL.

Re: LSSU Lakers 2016-17

Huge win for the Lakers over a tough Mavericks team. Way to go guys! We needed at least a split this weekend to keep the momentum and confidence going, and we've got that. It would be great to get another W tomorrow night. First ever win over the Mavericks in the Soo.

Re: LSSU Lakers 2016-17

Great game! Student section once again was really loud and into the game. Lakers currently lead ALL of college hockey in average goals per game with 5.

Re: LSSU Lakers 2016-17

Great job Lakers on a huge win for the program. It seems the Lakers are a year ahead of what I was expecting but I'm not complaining.

Re: LSSU Lakers 2016-17

The mavericks did a great job of clogging the passing lanes while pressuring the puck handlers tonight. The Lakers are going to have to adjust a little better when teams do that.

Before this season began if I were told that the Lakers will earn a split against Mankato this weekend I would take it.

I agree with both statements. Also I thought Gordie was a little shaky tonight. I thought both goals he gave up were weak or at least shots he usually stops. Also it's too bad the big Bret Micheals concert at the casino kept quite a few fans away.

This is the best 8 game start since the 1995-96 season that also stared 6-2-0. We all should be pretty happy with that.
Edit: This actually is the 2nd best 8 game start since 1995-96. The Lakers started 7-1-0 the first 8 games in 2011-12.

Did anyone at the game see if Torrel was hit with a high stick in the offensive zone right before Mankato went down for the shorthanded goal to make it 2-0?

Also the Lakers were 7-1 back in the fall of 2011 when they started by sweeping Huntsville and State, splitting with BG and then sweeping at Miami.

I stand corrected. Totally forgot about the hot start that season. Roque's only winning season in his last seven years coaching the Lakers.

Laker Dude, I didn't notice if Gage was hit with a high stick before that goal. The reffing was per usual very unconsistant. Mankato's coach was livid for most of the game so again neither team were very impressed with the zebras.
