LSSU Lakers 2016-17

Re: LSSU Lakers 2016-17

A 5-1-0 start is still very impressive which is the best 6 game start since 1995-96 and the Lakers still have the best overall record in the WCHA. Next weekend no doubt will be a big test. Let's hope we can get our revenge on Mankato for knocking us out of the playoffs the past two seasons.

They played well tonight. I have no problem seeing them lose with the effort they put in tonight. Simply ran into a good goalie.

Re: LSSU Lakers 2016-17

The good ship Laker ran into a hot goalie and the refs were once again horrible as the legendary Voice of the Lakers, Bill Crawford expressed.

Lake Superior State hockey suffered their first defeat of the 2016-17 season on Saturday night in the second game of the weekend Western Collegiate Hockey Association series against Alaska.

Despite the loss, the Lakers are off to a tremendous start to the season with a 5-1-0 overall record and a 3-1-0 mark in conference play to rank fourth in league. The Lakers also have two games in-hand on the three teams above them in the standings.

For the second time on the weekend the Nanooks (3-5-0, 2-2-0) jumped out to a two-goal lead early in the first period. Marcus Basara scored the first of two goals to open the scoring 3:51 into the opening whistle on a two-on-one break, beating sophomore Nick Kossoff on a one-timer over the left shoulder.

Following a game misconduct and five minute major penalty called on LSSU freshman Collin Saccoman, the Nanooks captured their second goal of the night on a power-play tally by Ross Heidt.

Sophomore forward Gage Torrel opened the scoring with a power-play strike of his own with 4:53 remaining in the first period. Freshman Kris Bindulis and sophomore forward Mitch Hults added the assists on Torrel's goal.

Trailing 2-1 to open the second period, Hults evened the score 38 seconds into the middle period on clearing attempt by junior defenseman Aidan Wright on a clearing attempt that was picked up by Braydon Gelsinger in the offensive zone. Gelsinger played the puck over to Hults, who showed great patience in picking the top corner past Jesse Jenks' glove for his third goal of the season and second point of the night.

In the third period Zach Frye put the Nanooks ahead 4-3 with 6:41 remaining in regulation on a power-play goal set up by Chad Staley.

Hults would later tie the game with 4:52 remaining in regulation after intercepting a puck in the neutral zone and working a good give-and-go with junior defenseman Kyle Chatham for his third point on the night.

Despite taking a power play into the five-on-five overtime period, the Lakers were unable to find the game-winning goal.

With both teams back at even strength Basara lit the lamp for the second time in the game on his second shot attempt in a goal-mouth scramble, causing the UAF bench to spill over the boards and swarm him in the corner.

Jenks earned his second victory of the season and was named the first star following a 38-save performance. Kossoff made 22 saves in the loss in his season debut.

Hults' three point performance puts him in the LSSU lead for points with 11 on four goals and seven assists. Torrel's (4-4--8) goal moves him into a four-way tie with Owen Headrick (2-6--8), J.T. Henke (3-5--8) and Gelsinger (3-5--8) for second on the team with eight points.

The Lakers are again at home next Friday and Saturday (Nov. 4-5) as they host No. 13 ranked Minnesota State. Adult tickets are $12 and children tickets cost $6. LSSU faculty, staff and students get free admission to all Laker Athletics events.

Ringy Dingy!

That's going to happen to every team on occasion throughout the season. I was away from home for a few days and didn't get to listen to either game but did listen to the recaps with Bill C and Damon. Sounded like we played better on Saturday but like you said, we just ran into a hot goalie.

I was not at the game, but just watched on the WCHA.tv feed. They did play a lot better on Saturday than on Friday. I don't know if Saccoman deserved 5 on his hit early in the 1st period, but it was definitely an unnecessary hit looking at the replay.

Interesting tweet on Randy Russon's Twitter. It says: "Just curious why unbeaten LSSU Lakers would give their backup goalie his first start of the season tonight...and then lose. Hmmmmm." Seems like he's blaming Damon on the loss on for playing Kossoff instead of Defiel. I'm not sure if the Lakers would of won if they played Defiel instead. However I was very surprised that Kossoff got the start. I figured Gordie would play until the Lakers lost or he had a bad game.

Maybe a bit of a surprise, but Damon needed to get Kossoff some playing time. This is Gordie's last season and it makes sense to get Kossoff into games occasionally to get him more experience and ready for next season when presumably he'll battle for the starter's job with Nietto (or even Lukenda if he shows he's capable).

I figured Saccoman was getting 2 minutes for that hit which was poor judgment on his part by the way.

Of the four games played at home this season so far I don't think any team was happy with the officiating in any single game. I like that they want to get rid of the interference to open the ice up but when the officiating is still so inconsistent all they are doing is hurting the flow and integrity of the game. It's pretty bad when home fan's moan and grumble when the visiting team gets called for bs penalties. One other thing that is a bit unnerving is when they watch a legitimate infraction and make no call.

Back to what's important I liked the Lakers play last night I just have to tip my hat to Jenks he was the difference in the game.

Re: LSSU Lakers 2016-17

I know you want to give your backup goalie some playing time but I wonder if you want to change goalies during a winning streak . You are off to a great start so keep playing your strengths until something changes .

Re: LSSU Lakers 2016-17

There's no way of knowing if he's a little banged up or if Kossoff was just killer in practice last week.

Kato did the same thing last Saturday after a Friday win over Alaska, and I thought the same thing, but as a friend noted, the other option is to change goalies after a loss, and risk a 2 game losing streak. Bottom line, everyone is going to lose multiple games this season, so don't worry about. Look at Tech's struggles early this year when their goalies had no experience.

Anyway, good luck this weekend. Should be a fun series!

Methinks Randy is exactly right, man. Very strange why Coach Damon Whitten would bench the hottest goalie in college hockey?

We were trying to figure out the same thing in stands. Gordie did take a big hit in Friday's game when he was ran into. Curious if he was just sore and they figured it would be a good time to put Kossoff in net.

I talked to an NHL scout at the game, who told me he was there to see a couple of players, including a goaltender, and methinks it was strange that Gordie wasn't the starter on that night, man.

Well, considering that I didn't have information on any scouts being there, let along who they may've been looking at, I think my assumption was valid, since it was a pretty big hit the Gordie got on Friday, even though he laid the other guy out.

I know there was some talk last season about Kossoff being eligible for the NHL draft (if I remember correctly), but of course he wasn't drafted. Maybe a team thinks they can get him as a free agent, which would be great. He put together some pretty good wins last season so it wouldn't surprise me if teams took notice of it.

Though it would suck to potentially lose both goalies this year.

The NHL scout that was there was from the Blackhawks. He was at both games so he definitely got to see both goaltenders in action.
