LSSU Lakers 2016-17

Re: LSSU Lakers 2016-17

Nice win! Henke is on a roll right now. 11 points in his last 7 games with at least a point in all of them. Nice to see Correale score as he was in a goal drought.

Especially big win after having lost the lead in the 3rd period. Also good to see Hults get back in the scoring column. It would be nice to get Torrel going again also.

At least Torrel stayed out of the penalty box last night. He has taken too many dumb penalties that negated a power play lately.

Gutty win by the Lakers last night. Love Headrick's PR rep here. As for the assertion that Headrick was one of the best in college hockey is far fetched. He is a good player with lots of upside, but 5th scoring by D in the WCHA and a -10 on a team that is +2 at even strength means he'd have been unlikely to even make AllWCHA 2nd team.

Screen Shot this. So in 5 years we can add another swing and a miss to the resume of this turd.

As far as a debut goes it was good on a team and personal level for Garden River First Nation product Owen Headrick.

The slender defender made his Ontario Hockey League debut with the Erie Otters on Friday night and it was a case of win-win.

Not only did the Otters cuff the visiting Sarnia Sting by an 8-2 margin, Headrick scored his first OHL goal in his first OHL game after leaving the Lake Superior State Lakers of the Western Collegiate Hockey Association for Erie earlier in the week.

The victory allowed Erie to keep pace with the first-place Soo Greyhounds, second-seeded London Knights and in a tie with the Windsor Spitfires for third spot in the hotly-contested Western Conference.

Going into play today, the Greyhounds lead the pack with 67 points followed by the Knights with 65 and the Otters and Spitfires with 63 apiece.

A pretty impressive debut, methinks. But keep waving that Laker flag, man.

Several pro scouts have talked to me personally about Owen Headrick's ability, as the smooth skating defenceman has turned a lot of heads and methinks the opportunities he has in Erie, and a far superior brand of hockey in the Ontario Hockey League, will produce a far better outcome for Owen than he was getting at LSSU. Not a bad start last night, man.

Yeah, I would take any of the 6 regular Michigan Tech defense over Headrick.

Congratulations to Owen but I still do not understand his decision in the least. The OHL is a great league and its easy to see why many of the best 16 and 17 year old players take that route. You do not see many 19 year olds, however, jumping into that league. A 16/17 year old can play with and against world class players their own age, spurring their development into pro hockey players but what does a rookie 19 year old get out of it?? Owen was playing against much older and stronger players in the WCHA, where the average age of many of the rosters was well over 21 years of age. He has gone from playing against adults to battling with teenagers who are younger than he is. So from a developmental stand point, I feel he made a bad choice. It would have been hard to argue with him had he decided to play in the O as a 16 or 17 year old but he missed the boat I think and playing Major Juniors for the first time as a 19 year old will not make him a better player than had he stayed with the Lakers in the WCHA.

I wish the best for Owen also and it was nice to see him score last night, but he was also on ice for both of the Sarnia goals and finished the game with a plus/minus rating of -1 so just as with the Lakers he needs to work on his defensive play. Agree that it was a strange time to go to Erie.

Re: LSSU Lakers 2016-17

Big weekend sweep. Lakers now alone in 5th place and within striking distance of 4th!

If they choose to bring both Diego and Gus to Mankato, that means they will be unable to bring any extra D on the trip. Unfortunate both are suspended on Friday.

The other option would be to go with 7 D on Friday.

Hard to imagine them not bringing both Gus and Diego. Seems more likely they'll take just 6 D and hope for no injuries.

I think if they only travel one, it would have to be Diego. They traveled a lot without McKay last year, so it's not unheard of for the Captain not to travel.

That being said, I agree with you Bill. I can't imagine they don't travel both guys.

Re: LSSU Lakers 2016-17

Anyone at the game last night see how the skirmishes started at the end?

I recorded some of it.

But UAH was chippy the entire game. A lot of pushing & shoving. It was really the only way the game could have ended, honestly.

The linesman seemed to bail on the fight which caused things to end up worse than they should have been.

Hopefully Whitten won't put top guys on the ice anymore for a faceoff with 12 seconds left when the game is out of hand.

There were a good number of non-calls against both teams that created a lot of animosity, along with a few iffy calls (even though at least one of those went the Lakers way).

It feels like low hanging fruit blaming the officials, but by not calling some of those penalties, they allowed it to get as bad as it was. And like you referenced, they didn't really jump in to stop anything. They should've been skating towards the players at the end of the game, blow the whistle, and have separated them before anything could be started.

Who is the new goalie coming in next season ? I am not sure Kossoff would be a good enough goalie to play all the time.

Garrett Nieto. He was playing for Wenatchee of the BCHL when they recruited him last season. He started this season there and then was traded to Springfield of the NAHL. Had injury problems early this season at Wenatchee (I think it may have been a concussion) and his numbers are down from last season. Sounds kinda like he has struggled since the injury. Hopefully he'll get back to form. Hard to tell about Kossoff; he hasn't played all that much this season. The team defense hasn't been all that great at times, particularly when he has played. He did have a good freshman season in a limited role.
