LSSU Lakers 2015-16: The 50th season

Re: LSSU Lakers 2015-16: The 50th season

Max Vallis lost two teeth and needed stitches with the Henke hit. Pretty sure the call was warranted.
I have to agree with Whitten on the first major call, although I didn't see the Contact to the Head incident. Huskies Radio PBP noted that there was no penalty indicated prior to the dead play discussion. A major after the discussion seems to go from one extreme to the other, which I disagree with on its face.

Bill - Your edit makes sense as to why this game was out of control in the 3rd period and the pent up frustration.

Henke's deserved 5. Hults should have probably just been a minor.

What I don't understand is the league head says they want hits like these to be called game misconducts, and they will decide in league office whether to add suspensions. I consistently see DQ's called in recent games.

I think that's part of the reason why league coaches aren't happy with the reffing.

Nice to see Damon ****ed off at Henke and Globke. Unacceptable for both of them getting DQs. I could see Henke possibly getting an additional game suspension from the league.

Lately, WI and MI have been the culprits.

Can I ask a for a short summary as to the reasons for the DQs? Thanks!

Alabama is in last place and they still have 15 more goals than the lakers. With the six seniors leaving, and they have scored a total of four goals , maybe Whitten can start bringing in some quality goal scorers now. This 20 year drought of poor scoring has to come to an end .

Henke's hit which was the DQ halfway through the third was a clear hit from behind right at center ice. That one was a dirty play no doubt. There was no reason for him to make the hit. I see him getting additional games added on from the league.

The penalty on Hults was questionable. I think he just got a game misconduct, and not a DQ. There was contact up high. I would have been ok if they gave him a 2 minute penalty, or even a 5 minute penalty, but I did not think he should have been kicked out of the rest of the game.

As others said the third was for Globke saying something to officiating.

Does Coach Whitten do a weekly radio show? If so, when and is it available online? I would like to listen if he addresses the confrontation between him and Coach Pearson at the end of the game on Saturday. It did not look pleasant at all.

He has a show at 6:00 this evening. I doubt he'll have much to say about it. Probably something similar to what Mel said. Now that he's had a chance to look at tapes, it will be interesting to see what he has to say about the 5 minute majors to Henke and Hults. From the brief post-game chat after the game, it sounded like he saw the Henke CFB hit well enough because he said that it wasn't acceptable and hurt the team. His initial reaction to the Hults CTH hit in the 1st period was that he didn't like the call. Link to the show: http://tunein.com/radio/WKNW-1400-s30319/

No way. This was a clear 5 minute major and misconduct. Hults took three steps and delivered a shoulder to the jaw of Dane Birks just as the clock hits 8:00 in the first period. Clearly intentional, clearly contact to the head. The only reason it took so long to call was that it was a linesman who actually saw it happen, not one of the two referees. I saw it live in the arena and knew there was a lot of contact, but after watching the archived broadcast on WCHA.tv it's crystal clear. It's listed in the box score as a check from behind but that was not the case, and I don't believe it was a DQ.

It was not a DQ, the other 2 were...

Re: LSSU Lakers 2015-16: The 50th season

This is the second or third time that Damon has said that Shepard has not been happy with his refs calling Dq's. He wants the league to review the game misconduct penalties but they continue to call the Dq's.

Two Lakers had to get stitches during the game with no calls so maybe that had something to do with the Lakers losing their composure.

Any comments on who and when they needed stitches?

Re: LSSU Lakers 2015-16: The 50th season

Henke between periods and Globke during a period. I don't remember exactly what time on either one. I was down state so I didn't hear any of the Saturday game. Damon mentioned this on the radio show tonight.

I'm glad that you're player was not more seriously hurt.

Re: LSSU Lakers 2015-16: The 50th season

Henke took a slash and had stitches between the 1st and 2nd periods. Globke needed a couple of stiches during the 3rd.

Wasn't there a slash by a Tech player as well, either earlier this season or last season in the Sault, that resulted in a broken wrist or hand?

Either way, contact to the head is obviously an huge issue in college hockey across all leagues, which does not seem to be going away with more 5 minute penalties being called.

Do others think it is an issue that would be solved by going to the half shields? I think as long as the full cages are worn, players will not have respect for on another.

Re: LSSU Lakers 2015-16: The 50th season

I guess either way, to quote Bill Belichick, both teams should be moving on to Bemidji State.

Should be a great series. Bemidji State has a great record so far after New Year's, but almost all of their wins have come against pretty weak teams.

I wonder if Patterson finally plays this weekend?
