The only good thing about tonight was Damon's post game interview. It was total embarrassment as a fan even.

Re: LSSU Lakers 2015-16: The 50th season

As someone said on the post game, the Lakers didn't respect the Arizona State jersey. I agree, especially the 2nd period tonight.

I'm expecting a bit of line up changes tomorrow. I'm guessing Kossoff will start tomorrow as well being a non-conference game.

Re: LSSU Lakers 2015-16: The 50th season

SAULT STE. MARIE – Lake Superior State opened a two-game weekend series with Arizona State with a 3-2 loss against collegiate hockey's newest team.

The upstart Sun Devils (4-6-0) defeated the Lakers (2-7-2, 0-2-2 Western Collegiate Hockey Association) despite being outshot 26-25.

Gordon Defiel (1-5-2) started in net for the Lakers and appeared to be up to the task during the first period before the Sun Devils were able to capitalize on a pair of goals in the second period and the game-winning goal in the final period.

Ryland Pashovitz made 24 saves, allowing just the two goals, in the winning effort.

With 6:22 remaining in the first period and the Lakers on the power play, Gus Correale was whistled for hauling down Anthony Croston on a breakaway. Croston was awarded a penalty shot but was turned aside easily by Defiel.

Both teams skated through the opening frame scoreless with the Lakers leading in shots 11-10.

Defenseman James Roll (1-2--3) opened the scoring with 11:21 remaining in the middle period on a long distance shot from the blue line. The power-play goal, coming on a five-on-three advantage for the Lakers, was assisted by Gus Correale (0-3--3) and Anthony Nellis (0-4--4).

Ryan Stevens took a feed from Liam McGing moments later and scored a power-play tally to knot the game at 1-1. Joey Raats also assisted on the goal by Stevens.

The Sun Devils took a 2-1 lead 2:06 minutes later with a bang-bang play from off of the faceoff. Joe Lappin scored on a feed from Jordan Masters behind the Lakers goal.

Propelled by a 12-6 margin in shots during the second period, ASU took a 22-17 lead in shots to the dressing rooms for the second intermission.

52 seconds after the second break Lappin gave the Sun Devils a 3-1 advantage with his second goal of the game. Matt Kennedy assisted on the goal, as did Jordan Masters for his second assist of the contest.

Freshman blue liner Owen Headrick (2-1—3) brought the game to 3-2 on a four-on-three advantage but that would be the final tally for either team. J.T. Henke (5-3—8) and Nellis added the assists.

The Lakers were unable to register a tying goal despite consistent pressure and multiple chances with Defiel pulled in lieu of the extra attacker.

LSSU finished 2-6 on the power play, while the Sun Devils scored on their only power-play opportunity of the game.

The teams conclude the series Saturday night at 7:07 p.m.

Re: LSSU Lakers 2015-16: The 50th season

Well, at least the second win against a D1 foe isn't the one that makes it into the abbreviated history of the program.

Wish they posted stuff like the postgame interviews. I would really like to hear what Damon had to say about the game.

Re: LSSU Lakers 2015-16: The 50th season

Okay why was the captain sitting again tonight? I agree that they played with little respect for ASU. Looks like they are playing for next year.

Re: LSSU Lakers 2015-16: The 50th season

The breaks didn't go the LSSU Lakers way last night, but I expect that to change tonight. This is a program in progress and their are going to be some growing pains with such a young team, on the way to success. I would expect that Damon Whitten will make some changes to the lineup, and I expect them to bounce back tonight, he has them headed in the right direction.

One positive I saw last night was the play of Owen Headrick, the freshman defenceman from Garden River, Ontario, who is also the youngest player on the team. He scored his second goal of the season on the power-play and was the best player on the ice.

I'll be listening to Coaches Corner, with Dave "The Professor" Watson Saturday morning at 11 am on Radio Station WSOO www.1230wsoo.com from Applebee's, who will have more on this game and all things Lakers.

Need a bigger and louder crowd tonight at the Taffy Abel Arena. Listen to the Voice of the Lakers, Bill Crawford with the call on Radio staion Yes FM www.yesfm.net

See you at the rink, Ringy Dingy!

Take off your blinders. Yes, Headrick scored. But he also made quite a few defensive errors that lead to chances for ASU. He may be an offensive threat, but he still has a lot to learn in his own end. He was not the best player on the ice.

I would not be suprised if Headrick and Wright are both watching the game from the stands tonight.

No blinders here man, and I don't know who you are referring too. From what I have seen this season, Owen Headrick has been one of the standout high end talents. LSSU Laker head coach Damon Whitten would agree, if you asked him.

If you don't like my opinion you don't have to read it. I don't know about you, but I woke up in a free country this morning.

See you at the rink tonite!

The best player on the ice was probably from Arizona State.

So Jeff, you think that referees making $125 a game should not be called out? And does that mean coaches who are paid should not be called out either? Just curious.

At any rate, get real, man. Like you, I woke up in a free world this morning, complete with freedom of speech.

Coincidence???? ME THINKS NOT....

Re: LSSU Lakers 2015-16: The 50th season

I thought losing two to Huntsville was demoralizing on home ice but losing two to Arizona who have 15 players listed as freshmen, and a coach who was a club team coach before he jumped to head coach in division 1, sucks the air out of you as a fan . Imagine how the coaches must feel having a first year program with a first time division 1 coach come to Lake State and out hustle and out play their team for two wins . I keep hearing what a young team the lakers are and Arizona is a young team as well and that didn't seem to bother them in their two wins.

The Lakers will get experience as the season moves forward but talent will be the deciding factor on where they end up.

Re: LSSU Lakers 2015-16: The 50th season

Randy Russon's article from www.hockeynewsnorth.com Laker freshman star in OT setback

The good news is that a trio from what is an outstanding freshman class stood out for the Lake Superior State University Lakers on Saturday night.

The bad news is that the Lakers dropped a 3-2 overtime decision to Arizona State and lost both games to the Sun Devils by the same score in non-conference weekend action at Taffy Abel Arena.

The pair of setbacks dropped the Lakers overall record this 2015-2016 season to 2-8-2. The Lakers have an 0-2-2 mark within the Western Collegiate Hockey Association and play a pair of games at Bemidji State next weekend.

At any rate, as the Lakers fell in OT to Arizona State on Saturday, three freshmen turned in high-end outings in front of 1,977 fans.

Forwards Diego Cuglietta and Gage Torrel and defenceman Owen Headrick were among the LSSU skaters who turned in notable performances.

Cuglietta had his first collegiate goal and was relentless on the forecheck and strong on the puck throughout the contest. He now has 4 points on the season.

Torrel picked up an assist when the Lakers tied the game with 52 seconds to play in the third period and prior to that, was a going concern in the offensive zone all game long. Torrel is second on the LSSU scoring chart with 2 goals, 4 assists, 6 points.

And Headrick picked up an assist — he also had a goal in Friday’s 3-2 loss — while creating several other scoring chances with picture-perfect passes. The poise, skill and smarts of Headrick were on display throughout the contest as the youngest Laker quarterbacked the power play and played a regular shift alongside sophomore defence partner James Roll, who is four years older.

Headrick has played in all 12 Laker games thus far this season and is fifth on the team in scoring with 2 goals, 2 assists, 4 points.

After a listless first period on Saturday in which most of the excitement came from the voice of public address announcer Tim Ellis, the tempo of the game increased in the second and third stanzas, which were highlighted by several near-misses by both teams and a number of nice saves by both goalies — LSSU freshman Nick Kossoff and Arizona State’s Ryland Pashovitz.

Kossoff made 28 saves — but gave up the game-winner to Jordan Masters with just 32 seconds to play in the overtime frame — while Pashovitz turned aside 34 shots.

Charlie Zuccarini and Ryan Stevens scored the other Arizona State goals while besides Cuglietta, Gus Correale also tallied for the Lakers.

It sure is frustrating to watch. Seems like the inconsistency we saw under Roque has yet to go away.
