LSSU Lakers 2015-16: The 50th season

Re: LSSU Lakers 2015-16: The 50th season

How many people actually get American Sports Network? The WCHA calling it "national" television may be quite a stretch.

I don't and I agree with that statement Bill.

I'm very glad to see somebody else realized that this was the 50th year of the Lakers. Tried to do some research into the history of the program while the team was still the Soo Tech Hornets, but found very little to go on. I hope the team and school will do something to commemorate fifty years.
It looks like they are at least recognizing it.

I was trying to figure out if I get American Sports Network (on Directv), and what I've found is that it is not a channel that is available like that. It exists to create sports programming for a bunch of broadcast stations owned by Sinclair, and then it syndicates its productions to regional sports networks. So it is "national" in the sense of having its content broadcast all over the country, but whether or not the broadcasts are available in any one place could be unpredictable. According to Wikipedia, the ABC and NBC affiliates available in the Soo are both Sinclair stations.

It would be a pleasant surprise if I'm able to get the game; the key word being "surprise".

Re: LSSU Lakers 2015-16: The 50th season

Thank you, I saw that article in the paper as well. I wonder what could be done to recognize it throughout the season so close to the start of play? Attempting to do something on the uniform is probably too late, but maybe a quick "50" patch or a sticker on the helmets?

That would be cool. Hopefully they can work something out. 50 is a big number and I think the school doesn't realize how big of a milestone it is. 75 is the next really big milestone season but who knows if the program will still be around.

Sadly this season will also mark 20 years that the Lakers last made the NCAA tournament.

I have not heard about a 50-years patch or sticker, but I believe they will be wearing a helmet sticker for Gary McClellan, a long-time support of LSSU Hockey and the first Soo Blue Liners president. I am not sure if that is just for one game or all season, though.

Re: LSSU Lakers 2015-16: The 50th season

Northern pitched a shutout over the under 18 and now we shall see if the Lakers can do the same.

Re: LSSU Lakers 2015-16: The 50th season

Anyone check out yesterday's blue-gold game? Caught Bill Crawford on the radio yesterday morning and he seemed to be quite high on a number of freshmen and stated that the team was in the best shape he's seen in quite some time. Looking forward to watching an improving Laker team and a successful season.

Re: LSSU Lakers 2015-16: The 50th season

Luke Morgan has been a pleasant surprise so far this year.

Coming in I figured he would be a 3rd to 4th line Center and get some PK time, but he is contributing offensively. 2-2-4 in 3 games thus far. He is a +4 and has a shorthanded goal.

He is an extremely smart and fast player.

Nice get for LSSU

Re: LSSU Lakers 2015-16: The 50th season

Bill Crawford was very complimentary of a lot of the incoming freshman, on Coaches Corner yesterday. He is very positive about this years team, coach Whitten and the shape they are in. One in particular I thought played really well yesterday was defenceman Owen Headrick, who had a nice assist on one of the goals.

Head coach Damon Whitten agrees http://www.hockeynewsnorth.com/nojhl/laker-coach-talks-up-headrick/#more-7869

I worked yesterday but I caught the game for free on stretch. Nellis, Torrel sp?, Headrick looked pretty good as far as the freshmen go.

As far as the freshmen go, Torrel stood out to me. Kossoff didn't look too bad either. With so many players not wearing their standard uniforms, though, it was difficult to keep track on who was whom.

Headrick and Torrel looked really good. Having seen Kossof play against the Eagles several times. and not impress me, I thought he looked much better yesterday. I thought Loesch and Globke looked better than last year, they seemed to be more into the game. Last year they seemed lost and confused at times.

How did his second goal go down last night?

Re: LSSU Lakers 2015-16: The 50th season

Did the new WCHA hockey page get rid of the score board for all the teams across the country ? I only see WCHA teams listed on their score board.

Could be. I don't use the WCHA web site all that much. For scores, I've tended to use College Hockey News Live Scoreboard.

Re: LSSU Lakers 2015-16: The 50th season

Was hoping for a better offense.

Lot of new guys up front. It's going to take time for them to start gelling. Last season, we had a lot of news guys on D and in net and they did play better as the season progressed, especially the second half. Probably will be the same this season for all the new guys at forward. More disappointing for me was taking too many bad penalties. Special teams were the difference today. And the winning goal was a bad one for Kossoff to give up. I think the offense will be better this season, but I don't think we can expect it to happen right from the get go.

Re: LSSU Lakers 2015-16: The 50th season

Lots of good things to take out of the game today. I really like the speed the Lakers showed and the intensity throughout the contest. They are light years ahead of where they were last season at this time, when coach Whitten inherited a total mess.

Be interesting to hear the Laker Hockey Show and Hockey North Show this week with head coach Damon Whitten.
