LSSU Lakers 2014 off season thread

Thanks Section P. I see that Joe Shawhan is not listed. I would find it hard to believe that we would interview an assistant coach from MTU with no Head Coaching experience who has applied for multiple USHL coaching jobs, multiple Division III Coaching jobs and multiple Division I coaching jobs and never been hired but not Joey who is from here and has turned down multiple USHL head coaching jobs. Is Joey coming in for an interview? May get ugly if we did not give him at least a chance.

I'd be pretty sure that they've got more than two interviews planned in no particular order of importance or rank.

You're right RapidsCity.
SectionP, could you tell us if/when Joey Shawhan is coming in for an interview?

Does anyone on here know who is being interviewed? We have been told Whitten from MTU and Fogarty from Division III Adrian. Is there anyone else?

The people at LSSU have played it very close to the vest. There will likely be candidates interviewed that we never hear about because the are involved in recruiting processes. The ones whose names we see are the ones who want their names to be seen.

That's great RapidsCity. Protect them. What most people in the Soo want to know is if Joey Shawhan is coming to town on an interview. We don't need to know if Red Berenson, Tom Anastos or Jerry York wants the job. We understand that their business needs to be kept private. Joey is one of our own. What is his status?

If LSSU can't honor candidates wishes for confidentiality, it decreases the pool of worthy candidates. Hey, let's publish the resumes as they come in. Then we can satisfy the anonymous posters on the message boards. Ask yourself, why would someone jeopardize their current job for one they have no guarantee of getting?

Laker alum sure throw around big bucks. I didn't think every student majored in Fire Science.

The renovation banner has been hanging on the Norris Center for 5 years! Another classless promotion by the foundation with no follow up!

I thought they finally took the Hockey Renovation Banner down last summer? I'll have to ask some old colleagues if it is still up outside the Norris Center. How crappy would that be to deal with as the head coach and having to come up with an explanation as to why it hasn't happened because the athletic director and foundation didn't dot their i's and cross their t's.

Good post Bill. I’ve thought the same thing but this is the way I look at it. Shawhan is the perfect candidate for the job. Not just because of his proven ability as a coach but because of what you state, he is local. things were not going well pull a Bill Crawford and move him to a position on campus that would still benefit the University. I don’t know anyone that doesn’t think this is a no-brainer. This guy is that well liked. Your comments Bill say exactly that. Good post.

You can maybe speak of Shawhan being like by his relatives in town but I wouldn't transfer that like to the LSSU campus community especially the faculty. Shawhan left Lake State and went to NMU to get his bachelor's degree that he hadn't acquired at LSSU so he is technically a NMU Alum. Jim Roque was a preacher of the student-athlete. His kids went to class, took school seriously and graduated in 4 years and he is the first coach I saw do that at LSSU. Coach Roque was and is very well liked and respected by faculty at Lake State. During my time at Lake, Coach's Roque's teams had great GPA's and graduation rates. Two of Roque's players were selected as commencement speakers at LSSU's Spring graduation - a great honor and testament to Roque's commitment to the student-athlete.

Yet another new screen name Mrs Roque? How many is that now? As for Joe Shawhan, he is pretty well liked and respected in the Soo hockey community by far more than his relatives. And if I remember correctly, didn't he leave LSSU for NMU to continue coaching college hockey? But don't let the facts stand in the way of a rant.

You nailed it. There is a huge disconnect between the LSSU campus community/faculty which Jim Roque represents and the city of Sault Ste. Marie as a whole which Joey Shawhan represents and this single act underlines it. It’s one thing to not hire Joey after an interview to keep the locals happy but to not even have him as part of the interview process with the resume he has put together is really a slap in the face to our city. Jim Roque is hugely connected on campus. Maybe by embarrassing Joey, Kris has befriended those in the campus community that wanted her head after firing Jim Roque. The message sent by not even interviewing Joey drives a steak into the heart of the problem at “Harvard on the Hill”. No-one comes close to Joeys popularity. Kris Dunbar showed in this single move her separation from the community and her inability to promote LSSU athletics to the advertisers and ticket purchasers of Sault Ste. Marie. Now I will join the Soo community side of the ledger and disconnect from the season tickets my wife and I have purchased since 1985.

Re: LSSU Lakers 2014 off season thread

I won't be renewing my season tickets. I was waiting to see how the coaching search played out. I don't know if Joe would have been the best man for the job. But he would at least rank on the same plane as Whitten when it comes to the interview process. There may be reasons behind not giving him a shot and money could be one. Did he ask for a number that would cover not only him leaving NMU, but his wife having to give up her job there as well? Go ahead LSSU. Get the cheapest guy with the cheapest staff. Keep running it on the cheap and wonder why you're falling behind Huntsville in a few years! I'll be watching the Eagles and Greyhounds.

Fire Dunbar and get an hockey Coach that can also be AD.

A dual coach would benefit the Lakers very much.

A coach doesn't have time to run an athletic department. The busiest time of year at LSSU is winter. You want to stretch an already thin staff even thinner. Brilliant!

Re: LSSU Lakers 2014 off season thread

According to the 2014-15 schedules thread, the Lakers will be traveling to southwest Florida to play in the Estero tournament. The Lakers will play Cornell Sunday, December 28. The other teams are Miami and Notre Dame.

Re: LSSU Lakers 2014 off season thread

The LSSU Athletic Department is not releasing names of candidates until they have scheduled a visit to campus, as is the usual standard procedure at any athletic program. They are interviewing more than 2 individuals. There is a 9 person committee as well as team and faculty/staff input. There is representation from the community and alumni.

I hope this sheds some light on the process from my understanding.

Thanks CKrouth. Good information. Could you list the committee members that represent the community or do they wish to remain annonymous? It would be good to know those that are from the Sault area that have no affilliation or monetary interest in the University i.e. adjunct professors, team medical personnel, LSSU regents, students etc.Thank you.
