LSSU Lakers 2014 off season thread

Re: LSSU Lakers 2014 off season thread

There has been something of a sea change in D-1 hockey lately. Perhaps its all the early departure of the top talented players or maybe even there just isn't a whole lot of "elite" players coming to play college hockey. This hurts the big name institutions far more than the little ones and Union, as well as programs like Ferris, is proving that smaller schools attracting the older and more physically mature players can now compete and win against the cream of the crop schools like B.C. This bodes very well for Lake State as the conditions are almost returning to way things were when the team was a first world power in the late 80's.

Not a new concept; From a friend who was a data analyst.

Re: LSSU Lakers 2014 off season thread

Student body size-wise we are a little bigger than Union (2246)and we have both had success with recruiting older players. I think that's something we have to continue to do. The playing field is still different from 20+ years ago with the student clearing house. We had some players back then that might not make it through today.

That's where the comparison to Union ends. Tuition and fees at Union are $27k a year and they are very close to the eastern seaboard and population centers, not as isolated as LSSU. I'm sure their hockey budget is larger and surely will get bigger with their new exposure playing in the big game tomorrow night.

Union is also a private college, so yes their budget is going to be bigger.

Northern Michigan University

Read the quotes from the AD Forrest Karr. In Matt Wellens latest article. They are poor.

NMU should be scheduling St Norbert's, Adrian, and MSOE. These teams might fit the Wildcats budget. It sounds bad.

Funny, I just read the last three articles, all having to do with the new commissioner. None specifically mentioned the NMU budget. The only mention of finance was get the travel expense down for the whole league.

AD Karr is worried since the relignment. It is no secret teams don't want to travel up to Marquette anymore. More road trips mean more expense on the team.

With teams in Alaska, Alabama, and the UP travel expense will only go up.

I read the articles too. As usual, you're making stuff up. Your post resemble the byproduct of the south end of a north bound pony.

It's not hard to see that everyone is concerned about travel expenses. That's no secret. But exactly who are these teams that don't want to travel to the UP? Did you talk to the coaches or ADs? Have you ever actually talked to those coaches or ADs?

Oh sure, no question that Union has a much larger endowment and better access to capital resources to fund things like athletics but the point remains that they are a small fish surrounded by whales and yet still have become giant killers. This bodes well for the likes of not only LSSU but all schools in the current nWCHA. College hockey appears to changing and perhaps the traditional powers (since the mid 90's) will no longer hold sway over the game as they once did.

And so many kids are leaving the big name programs early and signing NHL contracts that it has made the NCAA race more wide open.

IBut exactly who are these teams that don't want to travel to the UP? ?

Wisconsin will only play NMU in Green Bay and Madison.
Michigan and MSU will not land a plane in Marquette anytime soon.
As you know CC, Denver and UND will never been seen hitting deer in the UP with team bus anytime in the near future.

Do you honestly think Minnesota Golden Gophers will be going to Houghton, Soo, and Marquette anytime soon? No

The Badgers also have only one way deals with LSSU and MTU.

Michigan and MSU won't land a plane in Marquette because NMU won't do 2 for 1 deals like a couple other UP schools did.

Re: LSSU Lakers 2014 off season thread

Looks like BC and Minnesota should have asked the Laker coaching staff how to beat Union:). Having their #1 goaltender out and having ours play great was a good combo. Congrats to Union. They played two great games, beat the two big dogs and are deserving champions.
