Re: LSSU Lakers 2014 off season thread

Andy Murray had no college experience.

He was in some other league. But he did have the financial ability to hire a pair of experienced college assistants. And they are paid in the neighborhood of what the head coach at one of the UP schools was paid.

How nice to see Miami,Mi,MI.State,Western, and Ohio State all done for the year.

Sure was considering that Miami was the spear point in dismantling the remains of both the CCHA and WCHA and its always great to see some of those big name programs get some mud on their face. Here's hoping that Miami goes into a 50 year tailspin!!!!

Prayers going on to the Somes family.

Re: LSSU Lakers 2014 off season thread

Hate to interrupt this bickering that is going on but wanted to pass along a message that I got a few hours ago from my parents who spoke with Marge. Gil Somes has been admitted to War Memorial and is not doing well. Not to go into the details but the doctor will not release Gil until he regains his ability to walk again. Marge is understandably concern as she thinks he may not come home after this admittance and his possible next stop is, I think its tender care in the Soo. Did not catch it as I know Gil's health has not been the best this season and was taken back by the phone call. I have known and spent a lot of time with these two great people since my years at LSSU starting in 1989. Please put aside this bickering and send your prayers out for Gil and Marge

Prayers for Gil & Marge. Hope to see him again soon!

Re: LSSU Lakers 2014 off season thread

Scuttlebutt from the back alleys as to prospective candidates. Joey Shawhan, Drew Famulak, Rich Metro, Anthony Palumbo and apparantly a couple of current NAHL GM/coaches (no names bandied about though).

Now both Shawhan and Famulak would be tremendous prospective head coaches as they would instantly add credibility to the program and continue the strong recruiting practices started under Roque. I would be ecstatic if the team could get either one. Metro would be a decent candidate but a relative lack of coaching experience, coupled with the fact that he would not have a solid recruiting network like Shawhan and Famulak raises some red flags. Anthony Palumbo is a non-starter. He would be an ideal assistant but certainly not head coaching material for a D-1 program. A NAHL coach/GM is somewhat intriguing but it all depends on who they would be.
I agree that Famulak would be a good choice, but I heard his wife has a really good paying job in Grand Rapids so it may be unlikely he would apply.

Speaking as a Ferris fan, I hope this is the case.

This brings up an interesting point. Would a Lake Superior offer be good enough to entice a candidate whose wife has a decent paying job? How about the candidate who would have to sell, and possibly take a loss on their home?

Re: LSSU Lakers 2014 off season thread

April 8th sounds reasonable for a closing date. Just a few days prior to the Frozen Four. Narrow it down to a list of finalists and start interviewing them soon after the Frozen Four, and make a selection.

Interviews could be conducted at the Frozen Four. With so many on the inside of college hockey there, it would be a good opportunity for vetting personally as opposed to by by phone, Skype or email.

Yep, if they narrow it down that fast they certainly can do that.

Murray kept the two assistants that Jeff Blashill hired when he went to Western. One of them, Pat Fershweiler would be an excellent candidate for the LSSU job.

The best move Andy made when he came in was to retain Fersch & Rob. Guys experienced in the college game. It gave the program continuity and allowed them to keep recruits that Blashill had signed.
