LSSU Lakers 2014 off-season thread (part 2)

Re: LSSU Lakers 2014 off-season thread (part 2)

Thanks for your comments, AnchorAway. In regard to my comments on the banquet, I was not attempting to mislead. When I said there were no coaches there, I was referring to the Head Coach. No attempt at false representation was intended. And the truth of the matter is that it just wasn't the same as past banquets in terms of attendance and those in attendance. But, I do believe this point is going to be seen subjectively, therefore it's not worth arguing.

With regard to the support Roque got from his AD, I still stand by my conviction. I honestly feel that if Roque had received the much needed support from his AD, it would have freed him up to spend even more time working directly with his team in further developing his players. And this should not be seen as an excuse, because it is definitely not intended as such, but it's hard to dedicate time to your number one priority when you have to take time away from that to attend to the duties - day to day and otherwise - that aren't being done or accomplished by someone else because the resources just aren't in place. The truth is that Roque had one full-time assistant and one part-time assistant. And a volunteer video person. This is simply not tolerable. Roque had to attend to details and duties that should have been covered by SOMEONE else within the program. And being the pragmatist that I am, I know that there are only so many hours in a day to get the job done and when those hours are spent spinning your wheels on things that aren't accomplishing your main task, that main task will suffer. THIS is where the AD should have gone to bat and gotten him what he needed. But, what is done, is done. And cannot and won't be changed. The only thing that CAN be changed is to take a long hard look at the AD, because she is still there. And mark my words, if it's business as usual for her, Whitten will do no better!

With regard to the tickets office, I can assure you that the one story I told you is absolutely true. I withheld the name of the fan who was sent away ticketless because there is no point in putting that out there. I do, however, have to disagree with you regarding the ticket office hours. You said that it's difficult to have the office open every day of the week. Au contraire! It is an office staffed by an office manager, and many work-study students. That same office manager has many other duties in addition to the selling of tickets for sporting events. She is a full-time employee, and as ANY full time employee should be expected to be at her job 40 hours per week executing the functions of her job. During her lunch hour and breaks, there should be a student employee in that office covering anything that would come up in her absence, i.e. selling tickets, answer the phone, etc. There is literally no excuse for there NOT to be a body in that office ready and prepared to sell a ticket to a fan seeking to purchase one. And furthermore, the AD is the person who oversees this office and operations. SHE - above all else - should fully understand the functions of the office, and have the ability to step in and do those functions if the situation calls for it, i.e. the example I cited in my pervious post. This sort of thing doesn't happen every day of the week, but it does happen. And when it happens, it's simple Customer Service 101 that the customer should walk away happy and satisfied, not disgruntled and irritated. I, for one, am someone who has attempted to buy tickets from that office and have experienced a similar situation where I had to come back two to three times to get what I needed. That is simply NOT ACCEPTABLE!!! Like you said, given the attendance woes the Lakers have experienced in past year, this simply should never happen! Customer service is paramount! And, unfortunately, the current AD does not adhere to that policy.

What struck me as funny when I wrote my earlier post is that what the AD has done to our student section sounds like what an AD at the high school level might do on a game day. And that made me laugh! She is the AD of a Division 1 hockey program, and she is spending a large portion of her time on game day monitoring and policing college students! There is nothing offensive - in my opinion - that has ever come from our student section! They are COLLEGE STUDENTS afterall! Apparently this AD has never been to Yost! The pots and pans should be permitted; the inflatable sticks should be allowed; the cheers should prevail; and the students should be allowed to cheer as they wish! For some unknown reason, the AD is spending far more time on ridiculous aspects of a job that I believe belongs to someone else entirely - say maybe the facilities manager or security, just to name a few - that it makes me wonder HOW she has the time to fulfill the objectives and requirements of what is supposed to be her job! It's time for a change.

I would like them watch over the aisles for people walking down during play instead of making sure that the students that are cheering are in the correct seat. As for the ticket office I tried to buy extra tickets twice and it was not open during the day. I told Dunbar one time and I was told to come when a volleyball game was going on and then it would be open. She is worthless as well as clueless.

Here, here! Gone are the days when the ushers would hold people at the top of the stairs until the whistle, and then let them go to their seats. That's a huge pet peeve of mine too!

I think staffing the ticket office from 9am-5pm, Mon-Fri should be a no-brainer. Like I said, there are numerous stories about unsatisfied customers when it comes to purchasing a ticket! Does it take a rocket scientist to figure out that people are going to stop there during their lunch hour and the dang place should be open?! I guess the AD Is too busy trying to strategize her next move on the student section to care! It's time for a change. No point in going halfway with just a new head coach; clean the whole dang house!

I agree people obstructing a seated persons view happens way to often at the games.

I have felt bad for the students being not able to cheer for the team the same way other teams students get to cheer for their team and I have told Mrs Dunbar that in a email.

I agree the ticket office needs change and with the lady in charge retiring maybe it will.

Ultimately, the office manager is a minion. Starts from the top! It's time for MORE change!

Randy Russon interviews our new coach....http://www.hockeynewsnorth.com/ncaa/a-chat-with-coach-whitten/....some interesting tidbits concerning the assistant coaches, seems like Whitten wants to cast a wide net for assistant coaches.
Good article. Whitten sounds energetic and aware of who is politically correct. Looks like Jim Roque met his match. Hopefully Comley also advised him to hire an experienced coach. His old boss at MTU Jamie Russell is available as he recently resigned from Providence College according to the MTU site.

Interesting take on the Dunbar/Roque situation. I wasn’t aware tensions were heating between the two. Always viewed them as having a good working relationship. Sounds like Roque was gunning for Dunbar’s job….and maybe still is. Also seems that Tom Coates is talking about interest in the A.D. job. I was not aware that he used to manage the Norris Center facility and also served as assistant A.D. some time ago. Now has fund raising on his resume. Never a dull moment.

I genuinely liked Russell as a person - he helped start the Misfits, was supportive of the Pep Band, and actually wrote me a lengthy and cordial reply to a letter I sent him expressing concern about Tech's program under his watch. I do feel that he had some pretty sh*tty luck in his final three seasons in Houghton, but ultimately he lost control of the team and had to go. However, something tells me that no one outside of the Providence inner circle is getting the full story on his "resignation", considering that it's been almost a month since that was announced and he hasn't turned up anywhere else in the hockey world yet. Call it a hunch.

By a hunch do you mean you think Russell will end up here at LSSU? The hunches you guys get on your site seem to be pretty accurate. Someone on your site had a hunch that Whitten would get the LSSU job and that panned out.

No, I suspect that perhaps things between Russell and Leaman/Providence were "not working out" after three years. I think it is unusual for anyone to leave a salaried job, without already having accepted another offer elsewhere.

I think Bill was referring to the Rockettes, Laker Loves, and the uninformed masses that create a perception based on false information. Midge, you're poison to this thread. You can have your own opinion but you continue to spin your wheels because you can't move on.
Also, the ticket office is generally open from 9-5 with certain exceptions. Anyone with half of a brain could always make a phone call to the ticket office instead of wasting their time driving around town. How hard would it be to make a 30 second phone call to see if the ticket office is open? Quit being so helpless and stop this woe-is-us attitude. You want to see change? Be helpful, be proactive, don't start this 5 person riot against Dunbar on a forum that doesn't matter. If you don't like the direction things are going you can leave or you can try to help. You're doing neither.
The people doing their jobs with the limited resources are not the minions. It's the idiots who attack the staff on twitter and on this forum that are minions. If you have a better idea then email it to them or apply for their jobs. I think the one thing that we do ask is that you stop being such a bitter troll.
:)

One point of clarification. It's the Roquettes, not Rockettes. ;)

(Credit goes to Anchors Aweigh for coming up with that name.)

When I get tickets a head of time I always do it over the internet; they are always waiting for me when I get there for the game.

Re: LSSU Lakers 2014 off-season thread (part 2)

Since there has not been any news on the assistant coaches yet. It looks like Coach Whitten is really doing his due diligence in making sure that he will have the correct fit. I will give him credit for that.

Re: LSSU Lakers 2014 off-season thread (part 2)

Anymore word yet on when the WCHA schedule will be released or when our non-conference schedule will be released? Can anyone confirm the rumor that we are traveling to North Dakota?
