Re: LSSU Lakers 2014 off-season thread (part 2)
I don't know what your issue with Rick Comley is. From reading your posts about Whitten, I almost get the feeling that you're dislike of Whitten getting the job is more of a guilt by association thing (with Comley).
OK, I said I thought we should move on and that's what I'm going to try to do after today. But I'll go a little farther for today. I'll address Barr first. I really liked his credentials. What I heard from the meet and greet sessions with faculty/staff is that he wasn't as impressive in that setting as either Fogarty or Whitten. He didn't seem as prepared to answer questions nor was he as enthusiastic about getting the job as the other two guys. Maybe that is because this was his first time in such a setting and didn't know what to expect. I heard that both Fogarty and Whitten made a good impression in those sessions, Fogarty a little more so. I don't know why Fogarty didn't get the job over Whitten. The big piece of information that we don't have is how did the actual interviews go? It's the candidates' job to sell themselves as the best person for the job and show that they can be leaders of the team. Perhaps Whitten did a little better job at that than Fogarty, and both better than Barr did. I don't know. Or as has already been mentioned, perhaps Fogarty (and maybe Barr) had more demands than Dunbar was willing to meet than Whitten did. Again, I don't know. I don't think the "on paper" qualifications are the be-all end-all of the process. The actual interviews, and to an extent the meet and great sessions, also figure in significantly once the finalists are determined. I though Fogarty was going to get it. Whitten did instead. I accept that and am anxious to see what he can do.Bill, of more interest is knowing what happened to Fogarty and Barr. It would look much better if either of those two individuals were actually offered the job over Whitten. There is no comparison when reviewing credentials. I am looking for someway to offset Whittens press conference comments that Rick Comley, who was on the search committee and handled the applications, was the "most influential person in his life." That was a poor comment to make. Great comment to send Rick Comley in a thank you note but poor comment in his opening press conference.
